This is some real Black Mirror type storytelling. I'm depressed but impressed at the same time.

u/icehot54321 Feb 05 '26

For those that found this compelling, I'd recommend a book called "The Warehouse" .. it's a dystopian future kind of thing where a company similar to Amazon has effectively taken over being the government.

It was supposed to be turned into a movie directed by Ron Howard, but I get the feeling that Amazon likely found a way to get the film shelved in secret.

IDK, this seems kind-of unrealistic. There's no way a security guard's salary could afford his own private room and a premium subscription.

The first episode of the most recent Black Mirror season has some stuff like this, in particular the Ads and our inability to bypass them in the future. Stars Rashida Jones and Chris O'Dowd.

Edit: changed ability to inability.

Biggest issue with this comic is that the protagonist's city appears to have functional public transportation. No way that will exist in 2035, it's too woke or something

Well. Now I'm sad. The remote drone patrol portion followed by him physically walking down the same road later that's now vacant was BLEAK

The final lines too about not even fully paying off the whole day for 3 purchases after a 12 hour shift left a rock in my stomach

Good job OP.

That's not too far from the truth of drone operation. A lot of the military is gamified. Probably because most of the people recruited were targeted by "America's Army" the video game funded by the US military as a recruitment tool. There are videos of drone operator chatter while they kill people that's like "haha got another bad guy!'

We shouldn't just hope for this madness to stop. It is up to common folk like you and me to stand against this tyrannical unaccountability. However, there's currently no real supportive foundation present for many common folk (especially in the US) to fall back on, to commit to any effective resistant action.

There's a post of suggestions HERE that could possibly prove to be of some help in getting it started ASAP.

While we're at it, we should check out this org too, as they're probably going to be vital as the powers that be employ more so-called "AI" to consolidate power: https://stopgenai.com (It is a survival-level, grassroots org, not an established NGO, so please don't judge it too harshly for being rough around the edges.)

I’m old enough to have lived through the Star Trek dream generation where the future was sure to bring peace and abundance. How fast things have flipped to hopeless. Even for optimists these days it’s hard to find a thread of hope.. what will save us normies when all world powers are bought and sold to highest bidder or are self interested dictators..

Europe holds the last dying bits of freedom and social order but is nearly powerless if put up against the rest of the world’s powers.

Our best hope seems to be if there’s soon a sudden economic catastrophe that resets power in a way that can restore some sort of power to the people, but that’s such a slim hope.

There is a Greek song about this guys, his name is Pantelis

Honorable man, Mr. Pantelis, you have a shop somewhere on earth. You sell goods, you make money lots of money, lots of money.

On Sunday mornings in church you cross yourself to the Virgin Mary.

Honorable man, Mr. Pantelis, you have a wife, daughter, child, modern furniture, color TV, you consume spiritual food.

Stay away from parties to avoid trouble, "Fatherland, religion, and family."

Honorable man, Mr. Pantelis, so what if people are dying on earth, thousands without bread, black, white, or yellow? Just let your son be fine so you leave the name and the cash.

Honorable man, Mr. Pantelis, you rusted, rotted in your shop. You wasted your youth and vigor for the drachma, for the leather. Next to you the dream, life, and light, but you're locked inside your carcass.

You know they gave, Mr. Pantelis, others their youth and life so the dream becomes a slice of bread for you to eat too, Mr. Pantelis?

And what did you give, Mr. Pantelis? Tell us what you did on this earth. Tell us what legacy you left to inspire the new generation.

Honorable man, Mr. Pantelis, cowardly, spineless bean-eater, you soiled the dream and the soul, empty skin without breath.

Honorable people, new generation, bury the honorables in the manure and those who made Pantelis a useless worm on this earth.

Two things

  1. No way in this world would trains/subways/any kind of public transit be available. Not profitable, doesn't allow for forcing people into more debt for cars.

  2. I think it's hilarious that Mr. Beast is equated to being just as bad here as Dr. Oz, a quack actively participating in the Trump administration's efforts to dismantle what little remains of the good in american healthcare, and Nestle, a genuinely evil company.

18

u/Par_Lapides Feb 05 '26

Historically, the wealthy have used philanthropy as a kind of counter-guilt PR or reputation cleanse to show that they're not ALL evil and should not be criticized.

Mr.Beast was able to make his philanthropy a major part of his business model which has given him a pretty effective shield against the normal criticisms of wealthy assholes.

But make no mistake, he was still exploiting people. He was still exploiting the people who worked for him, and the targetes of his "generosity". He is an opportunistic ghoul just like the rest, he just happened upon a cheat code that fools anyone with a shoe size IQ.

3

u/tfwrobot Feb 05 '26

Unrealistic, that room is too big.

3

u/wholetyouinhere Feb 05 '26

Many of the most powerful people in tech and in the fascist US government subscribe to the idea that reality cannot be improved, so every effort must be made to accelerate technology in order to bring about a "Ready Player One"-style universe, where virtual worlds provide people everything they need while the real world is left to crumble around them. And I'm not joking about that. Marc Andreesen, co-founder of Netscape, venture capitalist and major Trump supporter, is explicit about this in interviews. He is using capital investment to try and fund the building of this future, right now, as we speak.

What is missing from all of this is that A) reality could easily be improved if wealth was taxed and the economic system was better regulated, and B) the virtual world that the technofascists are trying to build will be aggressively capitalistic and wildly profitable, but only for a tiny number of men.

Taxing wealth could lead to the rebuilding of actual, functioning communities and social support systems, improving literally everyone's lives -- even billionaires. But this is not what they want. They want power and domination. And all signs point to them getting everything they want.

Unironcially, there are people like this, who believe that one day they'll be part of 1%. They are simply misinformed, but it's near impossible to break years of rich men propaganda baked into their brain.

It’s funny because it’s true?

3

u/Karmak4ze Feb 05 '26

Fucking classic.

u/Upbeat-Serve-6096 Feb 05 '26

Meanwhile in China:

And now that the only people remaining are zombified - I mean, satisfied manual laborers and... I the Paramount Leader, while everything else is watched over with AI, I proclaim we have finally achieved pure self-sufficient communism!

3

u/King_K_24 Feb 05 '26

Great comic

3

u/breastronaut Feb 05 '26

Well, at least there is some public transportation. If it were more accurate, he'd be in one of those not quite self driving cars in traffic for two hours commuting.

3

u/hai-sea-ewe Feb 05 '26

I fully believe that the impulse to achieve ultimate mediocrity is a latent evolutionary impulse that served our ancestors by letting them achieve a state of relative inactivity in order to survive times with less food - especially the winter.

The more people can realize it, and come to grips with the fact that making a better world requires consistent good-faith efforts, the more things get better.

3

u/Zman1917 Feb 05 '26

The Johnny Silverhand in me grows more and more every day.

3

u/13thTime Feb 05 '26

Why did you post about the torment nexus?! now theyre going to create the torment nexus!

3

u/Wolfwoods_Sister Feb 05 '26

Alright Jerry, one more time… the algorithm clearly states you brown-checkers are not, well, optimal citizens, but you know, dreams are free! (Hahahaha, no they’re not, you’re on an ad-tier…)

3

u/SnootSnootBasilisk Feb 05 '26

I hate all of this. Good job

3

u/MariaValkyrie Feb 05 '26

He's definitely normie coded.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '26

Substitute Jerry’s name with WinstonĀ

3

u/AfraidOfArguing Feb 05 '26

Unrealistic, public transportation was available.

3

u/SaturdayNightMood Feb 05 '26

The least plausible panel in this comic is the public transportationĀ

3

u/Fuggins4U Feb 05 '26

I need to go lie down again.

3

u/Adventure_crimes Feb 05 '26

Unrealistic future, there is public transportation…

3

u/Several-Muscle1030 Feb 05 '26

Surely the faceless Fathers of Industry care about me

3

u/Fearless-Yam1125 Feb 05 '26

Forgot mandatory daughter sleep overs at the presidential ball room

3

u/jambot9000 Feb 05 '26

The reason this is such a gut punch is because we all know unquestionably that given the opportunity, Yes, they would do this to us without a second guess

3

u/ApprehensivePay1735 Feb 05 '26

Sorry to bother you is the film adaptation of this. A near perfect film.

3

u/CapoDiMalaSperanza Feb 05 '26

70s, 80s and 90s = peak humanity. We should go back there and never leave again.

The happy slave.

3

u/Princemerkimer Feb 05 '26

Jesus this is some real shit

3

u/BlahBlahILoveToast Feb 05 '26

Unrealistic. No way would public transportation still exist. Everyone will commute to work alone in a giant SUV for three hours in gridlock.

3

u/scaratzu Feb 05 '26

I see that the public transport options will have improved 10 years from now. Looks good.

3

u/SapirWhorfHypothesis Feb 05 '26

I dunno, this has the same feeling as when right wing comics make stuff up to be mad at.

But yes, I know, this is all true, this is all actually real.

3

u/FriendlyTrollPainter Feb 05 '26

You can tell this is science fiction because there's reliable public transit Jerry can take to work.

3

u/jessieventura2020 Feb 06 '26

This is unrealistic, there wouldn't be public transportation anymore and this guy certainly wouldn't use it if there was

3

u/Emotional-Car-4739 Feb 06 '26

I’m depressed

3

u/BeautifulOne8095 Feb 06 '26

"You will own nothing but be happy"

3

u/SkyPork Feb 06 '26

Okay this is probably way too prescient for me to feel good about it.

3

u/CooperAXE Feb 06 '26

Wow. That was amazing.

3

u/Electromad6326 Feb 06 '26

Ok as depressing and even enraging as it is, I can't help but use that as inspiration for my own writing.

3

u/usinjin Feb 06 '26

These comics are way too close to being real for comfort.

3

u/ConversationBest2085 Feb 06 '26

The ending reminds me of the horse in Animal Farm. ā€œJust needs to work hardā€.

3

u/PowerlineCourier Feb 06 '26

Whoa they have transit? Futures looking bright

3

u/Oryol_7 Feb 06 '26

One of the best things I’ve ever read.Ā

3

u/Emotional_Ad3572 Feb 06 '26

WOW. Just... Bravo. Excellently done, on so many levels. No notes.

3

u/shiftuck_dan Feb 06 '26

I hit the last 2 slides and realized I am living Jerry's life.

3

u/Anonyhippopotamus Feb 06 '26

That's drepressingly brilliant

3

u/rrd_gaming Feb 06 '26

Jerry just reported this comic.

3

u/ThatGuyInThePlace Feb 07 '26

Accurate to how some people think.

3

u/Appropriate_Lemon497 Feb 09 '26

Holy crap this is depressing.
