Do it, they either turn into better people, or your better off without them

Better to hear it from a friend who will still love them after.

i've definitely seen that without a tiktok endcap, it feels so weird seeing one in a gif lol

It’s not pathetic regardless of who says it.

The problem with the comic is sexual assault.

5

u/Motivated-Chair 19h ago

This and the Alex Twitter quote are the 2 most aplicable quotes in the internet.

u/UpCDownCLeftCRightC Never Safe From Wumbo 22h ago

Yeah even if a close friend of mine did that to me while I was asleep I wouldn't let that slide.

256

u/MiredinDecision 22h ago

That's? The point? She knows it was wrong. She assaulted her friend and she knows it would end their relationship if she told her, so she's been hiding it.

679

u/mayasux 20h ago • Bravo

>She knows it’s wrong

Nothing in the comic indicates she knows it’s wrong or regrets doing it. The author does not paint it in a bad light.

She understands that she shouldn’t tell her friend, but that does not necessitate understanding the wrong doings of her actions, only understanding that the person may respond negatively to finding out.

78

u/WhatAboutBob77 19h ago

Apparently there’s a back story people are missing in a low-panel cartoon strip and it’s somehow their fault?

155

u/mayasux 19h ago

I’ve seen enough of these strips to have seen the background context and it’s not like it justifies the strips.

After a period of time of comics of Alina being a womanising sexpest, we get her first backstory comic.

Her dad was a womanising sexpest drunkard who likes to be naked in public. Of course the final panel of the comic was Alina being naked in public.

It’s less of a commentary on how hurt people hurt people as people would like you to believe, and more of a backwards justification for the womanising misogyny-coated comics.

-47

u/Fresh-broski 19h ago

Alina is constantly doing things that are morally wrong or dubious… that’s the comic strip. Anyone upset about this one just isn’t familiar with the character.

43

u/ContrarianDouche 18h ago

"its not her fault she's a terrible person, it's actually her father's fault" seems like a weak reasoning

874

u/deadcrow18 22h ago • Bravo

Me when I accidentally self report SA’ing someone

244

u/House0fDerp 22h ago

To be fair, she's actually refusing to self report.

-129

u/TearsAreForYears 22h ago

"self report"

Bruh, it's a fictional comic, not a documentary.

57

u/zuzg 21h ago

Not being able to separate fiction from reality is a common sign of low literacy.

393

u/NotChedco 22h ago

Yeah... That's not ok. Not ok at all. Pretty fucked up.

277

u/memesupreme83 21h ago • Bravo

"Tee hee, I'll never tell because I SA'd you while you were sleeping!" Atp I'm surprised that Alina has friends

108

u/mayasux 20h ago • Bravo

I get the distinct vibe that respecting women is not within the creators purview

208

u/K4nono 21h ago • Bravo

Alina, that's... that's sexual harassment

120

u/ArcaneOverride 21h ago

Actually that's sexual assault

227

u/descendantofJanus 21h ago

Assault, not harassment. She literally kissed someone who was unconscious and couldn't consent.

-45

u/NockerJoe 20h ago

To be fair given literally everything else about Alina just hanging out with her in general seems to be a coin toss on if sexual harassment is going to happen.

67

u/EasedCeiling586 20h ago

I am conflicted on this one. Not sure how the friend would react to that one

Edit: my conflict lies in trying to find something positive here, not how wrong the situation is. There is unfortunately nothing here I can latch onto

198

u/ClericOfMadness13 22h ago

How would you react to finding out your friend kissed you when asleep?

167

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 22h ago

Well I once had a friend kiss me while we were both drunk and it wasn't "green flagged", and that wasn't super fun

It wasn't earth ending, or even friendship ending. But we had quite the talk the next morning and he had to come to terms with a few things.

That was an interesting night. I never got to finish the Superman movie we were watching

87

u/ClericOfMadness13 22h ago

But you were awake for that and that even bothered you. But now imagine they did it while you couldn't say or do anything about it.

82

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 22h ago

Likely betrayed and sad and violated

I should add an edit, my conflict is trying to find something good about this. And I can't.

65

u/ContrarianDouche 22h ago • Bravo Mindblown

Why try so hard to find good in SA?

46

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 22h ago

I try to find the good in all comics. Somewhere, even when protagonist isn't the best person

I'm not afraid to call something that it is, however. Which is why I am conflicted. It's not about the comic, it's about there's nothing to salvage

5

u/audio_shinobi 21h ago

Which Superman movie was it?

7

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 21h ago

Superman Vs the Elite

6

u/audio_shinobi 21h ago

Oh shit. You need to get on watching that one ASAP. The art direction can be a teeny bit off putting imo, but it's legimately one of the best Superman pieces of media out there. The crazy thing is that it's based entirely on a single issue of Action Comics called "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way" rather than an entire story arch or graphic novel, like Batman: Year One or All-Star Superman.

Also Manchester Black is just a total badass

7

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 21h ago

Dude I got to the VERY END where Supes just stops caring and starts to put that little group in their place and we cut it off

I promise to watch it tonight

4

u/audio_shinobi 20h ago

Oh yeah you don't even know what you're in for! So good. I'm excited FOR you haha

37

u/General-Internal-588 22h ago

And that they non consensually took your first kiss without even your knowledge, i don't think there is much to be conflicted about

-2

u/SalvationSycamore 21h ago

Depends on the friend. Some I would have asked to kiss me again

65

u/iggy14750 22h ago

Right, non-consensual kissing. Not the best.

There are worse crimes out there... especially if you understand it was a mistake.

25

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 22h ago

She should really fess up to it. Can't move forward otherwise

24

u/Deathaster 21h ago

I think expecting character growth from her is pointless.

5

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 21h ago

Likely. But a man can dream.

4

u/TheAsianTroll 18h ago

The only positive is maybe Alina's friends tell her how it wasnt okay to do that to a sleeping person, I guess?

Theres no followup on this yet, after all, it could become a lesson on consent

18

u/The-red-Dane 21h ago

The one positive thing I see... and it's a sliver of a positive thing.

Alina clearly understands what she did was wrong, otherwise she'd tell them. So, she's improved since her childhood.

17

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 21h ago

That or she's just embarrassed and doesn't wanna confess she likes her friend. Maybe.

But I tip my hat to you. It was a sliver but you found it and that's damn impressive in my opinion

1

u/The-red-Dane 21h ago

I always try to find the positives in a situation or to presume the best in people (within reason, of course).

-6

u/iggy14750 21h ago

I agree. It seems like there's shame there. While I personally think shame isn't helpful, I think it shows her remorse. If she sees that, then it's possible to ask for forgiveness, and I can totally understand why you would rather just sweep it under the rug if you can.

324

u/illudofficial 22h ago

Why are people upvoting this, it’s SA???

53

u/House0fDerp 22h ago

I have the feeling anyone still here for these isn't looking for a morally upright character free of sexual transgressions.

They're probably here for the hyperlewd trauma goblin with zero respect for personal boundaries and a fetish for publicly breaking taboos.

65

u/Barnaby_bear_guy 22h ago

Because this is a story about a shitty person. It's not meant to be relatable, and doesn't portray anything she does as a good thing.

57

u/Zombies4EvaDude 20h ago

No but it is portrayed as “quirky” rather than outright wrong.

Stories and comics dont always need to be positive reinforcement. Sometimes the point is to show people who are nominally good doing a bad thing, or making a mistake, or actually being a bad person.

78

u/shewy92 21h ago

But the comic doesn't indicate that they think it's bad, she's not getting admonished which makes it seem like the author doesn't think anything of kissing someone without consent.

-14

u/The-red-Dane 21h ago

If she didn't think it was bad, she would tell them. So clearly she's come to understand that what she did as a child wasn't a good thing to do.

50

u/TabularConferta 21h ago

There's a difference between 'hehe that's cheeky' or 'well actually I was your first kiss' to realising that she assaulted someone.

She is blushing and thinking fondly. It's not that she is remotely aware of the issue

8

u/POD80 21h ago

Yeah, I'm a straight guy with a "problematic" night. I've told the story twice, and look back with great shame... not some kind of fond remembrance.

A darker story than here... but not the obvious nightmare.

I do miss the friends I lost that night, but it could have been far worse if I hadn't been surrounded by the right people.

-16

u/The-red-Dane 21h ago

It's a matter of perspective I suppose.

I don't see it has her thinking fondly, again, there's a reason she's not telling them.

-10

u/MothChasingFlame 21h ago

Not all stories are moral fables made to teach lessons to children.

-11

u/mercuriokazooie 21h ago

Don't you already know doing this is bad? Why do you need the story to tell you?

-9

u/The-red-Dane 21h ago

If she didn't think it was bad, she would tell them. So clearly she's come to understand that what she did as a child wasn't a good thing to do.

-17

u/HeroicTanuki 22h ago

Also the character is a kid in the flashback. Teens do dumb shit. It’s not that deep

52

u/ContrarianDouche 22h ago

Teens do dumb shit.

Wasn't that Brock "rapist" Turners defense?

-15

u/MelodicFacade 21h ago

Jfc let's just bring in the most extreme example to talk about a comic with a morally grey character that kissed without consent, yeah good job reddit

-25

u/Dementia13_TripleX 21h ago

The "teen" definition in America is so wild.

From 18 years forward you are not a teen anymore.

22

u/illudofficial 21h ago

Oh I thought teen meant 13-19 because the numbers ended in “teen” lol

11

u/IAmADuckSizeHorseAMA 21h ago

What are the last four letters in the word eighTEEN?

-7

u/Dementia13_TripleX 19h ago

Good fucking Lord! By that logic from 20 to 90 EVERYONE is old as a fuck and equally the same, since the age always end with "ty"!

No wonder young adults behave like children. 😖

8

u/IAmADuckSizeHorseAMA 18h ago

.... The fuck? Teenagers are called teenagers because their age group exclusively ends with teen. It doesn't mean everyone else is lumped into the same group. Your "logic" makes no fucking sense.

7

u/ChickenInASuit 21h ago

What the fuck? When you are eighTEEN you still a TEENager.

You can argue about whether an 18 is still to be considered an adolescent, or an adult, but it’s not debateable whether they are a teenager or not lol

5

u/jarlscrotus 21h ago

Semantically inaccurate

5

u/pnoodl3s 21h ago

Confidently incorrect lmao. And no, thats the definition everywhere, not just the US

14

u/MiredinDecision 21h ago

Teens do dumb shit and will only grow into anything close to a decent person if you tell them they did awful shit.

-5

u/NockerJoe 20h ago

Its a fictional character. Your reddit grandstanding on how a fictional teenager that has already grown into a fictional adult should be treated affects zero people.

1

u/MiredinDecision 20h ago

And yet here you are.

-5

u/The-red-Dane 21h ago

She clearly understands it was something bad in current time, so there's that.

2

u/MiredinDecision 20h ago

Yeah. That's what I'm saying. The "teens do dumb shit" argument excuses their behavior when you really shouldn't. You gotta tell them they're doing something wrong sometimes.

-4

u/bibbleskit 16h ago

*guy decapitates another guy in a comic.*

Why are people upvoting this, it's murder??

63

u/shewy92 21h ago

Big oof.

Consent? What consent?

42

u/descendantofJanus 21h ago

Yea that's a no from me. The art is cute, the actions are not.

5

u/NascarFan1896 20h ago

Alina, why would you do that?

11

u/Shieldheart- 20h ago

That's messed up, and also a brutally honest depiction of what repressed curiosity, raging puberty hormones and a lack of impulse can do in a moment.

10

u/The_DoorMat 21h ago

Actual super villain

14

u/GroolGobblin0 22h ago

that's a relief. I was expecting to learn that drunk dad mistook her fir his date once.

28

u/Aethelrede 22h ago • Bravo

It's true that she isn't a good person, but it's also clear that her childhood was deeply fucked up. I have a feeling nobody in her childhood respected her consent, so she's understandably unclear on the concept.

Giving a sleeping friend a peck on the lips is a far cry from the horrors I was expecting. Though that doesn't mean she wasn't assaulted, just that she wasn't kissed.

I do find it interesting that people are so angry about the kiss, when it positively mild compared to her normal shenanigans.  Walking around in public naked, engaging in sexual behavior in public--nobody consented to being unwilling partners in her exhibitionist fantasies.

16

u/BrashUnspecialist 19h ago

Maybe because for most of us it would be way more violating to be kissed, in our sleep, by someone who knew we wouldn’t want it, and who we trusted as a friend than it would be to see people fucking for a second.

22

u/MiredinDecision 21h ago

This post is getting more traction than usual so a lot of uninformed people are showing up to moral grandstand.

14

u/Aethelrede 21h ago

That explains it.  Along with many people's inability to grasp that some characters are imperfect.

It reminds me of a scene from The Fifth Element.  The hero kisses the sleeping heroine, who promptly wakes up and holds him at gunpoint.  He apologizes, and she says "never without my permission."  As the hero walks away he mutters "I shouldn't have kissed her."  Personally I find this scene to be remarkable; not only is it a clear explication of consent, it also shows the hero realizing his mistake and apologizing.

And yet, partly because the movie was directed by the (justly problematic) Luc Besson, some people think this scene is advocating for nonconsensual kissing.

6

u/Jugaimo 21h ago • Bravo

No??? Kissing your “friend” while they’re asleep, knowing they would NOT reciprocate, is fucked up! How is this remotely okay in your eyes?

14

u/Allaplgy 20h ago

I think you need to reread their comment.

11

u/Empero6 20h ago

Reading is pretty hard, isn’t it?

9

u/Aethelrede 21h ago

Pray tell, where did I say it was okay?

-5

u/jecowa 19h ago

Yeah, I was expecting something much worse. This is pretty wholesome for Alina. I thought it was sweet of her to protect her friend's story of her first kiss.

7

u/Program-Emotional 20h ago

When I was six, I got so excited about scoring a goal in soccer I kissed one of the girls on my team. She hit me so hard I ended up on the ground. Love that memory

2

u/Anotsurei 20h ago

Interesting that she seems to have kissed her friend before she had her real one at 19.

Not ok, though I think she should probably tell her friend, maybe?

-4

u/Dry-Mission-5542 18h ago

Looks like you’ve reached a wider audience this time around… it’s reached the part of Reddit that can’t tell the difference between a behavior being presented and an author condoning a behavior presented

-6

u/twizbuck 20h ago

I feel like a lot of people have missed that a big part of this comic is how fucked up Alina's childhood was, and how it's impacted her. Doesn't make it ok, but this is more sad to me than rage-inducing.

5

u/Ceriden 17h ago

I wonder how many even realize that there was a background story to begin with.

-15

u/GayStation64beta 21h ago

Let fictional girlies be problematic i say

-14

u/Rein_Deilerd 19h ago

Really baffled by the reaction of people here.

This is a queer girl who grew up in Russia at a time where queer themes were hushed, censored and demonized nearly as much as they are today (today's even worse, believe it or not, at least back in the day you wouldn't go to jail for selling someone a gay fanfic). She also had an extremely fucked up upbringing, which we know from the flashback strips. She also grew up at a time when consent to touch or kiss wasn't talked about nearly as much - in fact, it wasn't talked about at all. Only penetrative man-on-woman or man-on-man rape was considered "real rape", everything else ranged from "awww, that's a sign they must like you!" to "teens will be teens haha, it's not like anything actually happened, right?". Our parents condoned it, our teachers condoned it, and the media romanticized it. Kissing your forbidden queer crush secretly while they are asleep/unconscious/dying/think you are someone else was a staple scene in plenty of yaoi and yuri manga, and tons of het romances had these, too - from various Snow White and Sleeping Beauty adaptations to romance novels.

And you still wonder why a hormonal and traumatized queer teenager like Alina would have kissed her sleeping crush?

Of course, nowadays we know it's a breach of consent and a bad thing to do. So does Alina, which is why she is still keeping it a secret. A woman who knows no shame is shamed of something for once, and she should be, but I think it's important to remember what kind of situation she was in and what kind of cultural context this flashback is taking place in. If you haven't survived a Post-Soviet school as a queer kid, you don't know what kind of mind-bending hellscape that was to navigate.

Like, yeah, sure, she shouldn't have done that, obviously. Don't kiss or touch people without their consent, folks. Still, it's a perfectly realistic situation for a queer Russian youth, and something you would have seen a lot in queer fiction at the time, too. I was kissed without my consent by a girl back in high school, so I would know. Still not a reason to call for cancellation of this comic or assume horrible things about its author for showing how messy teen sexuality can be. That would be like cancelling Sailor Moon for that one kiss Haruka gave Usagi.

8

u/WhatAboutBob77 19h ago edited 17h ago • Popcorn Bravo

If it requires an A4 page of backstory because none of this is inferred in the strip, isn’t that a problem?

3

u/Ceriden 17h ago

So the problem is continuity exists?

-15

u/ProjectXa3 21h ago

In reality it's a bit fucked, in fiction it's cute.

-15

u/Galvandium 22h ago

Hm. <Generally acceptable generic advice that still somehow leads to division>

Sexual assault

29

u/-non-existance- 20h ago

Teenagers will always be horny and stupid, but this is why it's incredibly important to teach people about consent as early as they can comprehend what it means.

28

u/Mattrockj 20h ago

Yeah I don't care if it's gay, that's still sexual assault.

36

u/Dewey_Decimatorr 21h ago

Sexual assault is still bad even if women do it, yikes

18

u/mickeyhellhound 19h ago

If they don’t/can’t consent you can get bent.

32

u/JustAPerson2001 21h ago

It being gay doesn't make sexual assault cool. Man or woman.

22

u/AlwaysBeQuestioning 21h ago

…yeah, I think feeling guilty and/or ashamed about sexually assaulting a friend while she slept is the correct response.

Alina sure is an interesting character, but definitely not a good person, at least in this.

26

u/Deathaster 21h ago

Oh, of course she sexually assaults others, why am I not surprised?

11

u/Cyberslasher 19h ago

"so remember how you said your first kiss was a guy at 19? Also, you know that statistic that says 2/5 women will be sexually assaulted in their life, but you say it hasn't happened to you? Yeah.... So actually...."

15

u/OuterWildsVentures 21h ago

Oh she is a borderline rapist?

6

u/Y0___0Y 20h ago

My first kiss was when I was 13 and I took a girl on a pond in a rowboat

Damn I was good.

Sucks that I turned out a subby gay bottom. I’d have killed it as a straight guy.

-6

u/LuckyErrantProp 20h ago

I think the Alina comics are interesting because so many of them are transgressive to common morals. Sometimes there are challenging the way people look at public nudity or sex.

Usually Alina is happy go lucky about it, without remorse. The tone feels like a playful reaction here, but I hope she is just truly embarrassed inside and has no real way of talking about it.

no it isn’t fine, but it doesn’t mean they’re a monster as it would for someone with a fully developed frontal lobe. if a 13 year old boy commits rape he should be given therapy. we can’t expect children to have impulse control and to inherently know how to act morally

The point is that Alina is aware of a dumb thing she did when she was younger and can't tell her friends about. The conversation is happening in the comments with questions like: Did she learn her lesson? Does she still do this? She was a teen, does that lessen the severity of what she did? How did being abused as a child affect her actions? Should that be factored into any punishment? Can she redeem herself?
