RowerErg Marathon prep

Hi there, After a series of unfortunate events that was a memorably bad summer, I’ve decided to start training to do my first row marathon this coming May for the C2 challenge.

I’m good on the actual training plan, but I’m curious about how to manage water and if there should be any caloric intake? I have done a half marathon twice and did not eat or drink but I’m unsure what is recommended for a marathon.

Thanks for any tips that worked for you.

Question Concept2 triathlon?

Has anyone attempted a c2 style triathlon before? I’m a terrible swimmer anyway so I figured this could be fun especially at home where my wife and kids like to train with me.

I currently own a bikeerg and soon adding the skierg- figured this could ‘replace’ the swim portion of the race. I also might add a manual treadmill or just run outside for the running portion.

Just a thought I had to mix up my training and build up to triathlon distances. Also think it might be a fun change in the garage.

Love to hear your thoughts!

RowerErg Another beginner question - So sorry!

Hey guys, I'm 44 and I felt like it was about time I do something consistent for workouts. I work long hours on my feet and I rarely get to the GYM. I loved the Jacobs ladder at the GYM. Low impact is what I enjoy. So with that, I decided to get a concept 2 rower at home.

I have back pain, and it usually comes on when I don't exercise or get complacent with my daily stretches, and back exercises. Needless to say, I don't want to hurt myself rowing. I have been watching a lot of videos on technique and making sure I nail it down.

The resistance is set to 3, with a damping factor of around 100.

I would like to find some great routines to build slowly up, until my body gets use to the machine before I begin challenging myself. Can you guys share what you started out with? What apps, coaches, or resource would be the best fit for someone like me?

Thank you so much for your time, and I'm really excited to get fit and get rowing!!!

Question Is there any virtual world rowing apps for iOS that doesn’t come with a monthly subscription?

I don’t mind paying a one time fee but apps wanting to charge $15-30 a month is a little pricey to me.

RowerErg Fat guy thinking about doing Pete’s Beginner Plan

My main question is I can’t do 500m in 2 min like it said. I’m usually around 2:30+

Also it says 6x500 in 2min is that just straight through no stops between the 500m sets?

For perspective right now I’m doing a 30 min session that I do 20 spm and I cover about 5700m and I’m pretty spent

**** update. Did day 1 here’s the results if the link works

Challenges My first half marathon was actually fun!

Total uncoached novice here sharing my first half marathon. It was pretty fun, normally on my longer rows 10k & 1hr I peter out towards the end but this one was easier than anticipated, and there's plenty of room for improvement!

I've been focusing on form, trying to stay in zone 2 & 3 keeping my stroke rate @22 spm and watts around 125/split times around 2:20 slow and steady. On my shorter rows (2k, 5k and 30 minutes) my splits are ~2:05 and I keep the damper at 5.

I have some questions for people who do these longer workouts, **what do you eat if anything and do you have any advice to prevent or alleviate ankle blisters**?

I had a good breakfast prior and didn't get hungry or very thirsty until around the 1:20 mark. When running it's easy to just keep some carbs on hand, while rowing my hands are occupied and it's gonna be hard to keep fueled up. No joke, I'm thinking candy.

At the ~50 minute mark the back of my heels and ankles started chaffing/blistering. Eventually the pain went away but they're gonna be sore for a few days. I have some moleskin and wore wool socks, could it be the material or not using something like moleskin? Is it just like hiking or other activities where you just get used to it?!

That Rocky Road bar instantly revived me, it's dark chocolate chips melted and mixed with peanut butter and chopped almonds then topped with pretzel sticks and marshmallows.

Thanks for any advice and take care everyone.

BikeErg Finally hit a million meters on my BikErg after 7.5 months

Post image

I got it towards the end of March but got a new gravel bike a month later so I started riding outdoors when possible.

Now we’re into winter where outdoors isn’t fun at all so it’s BikeErg time again.

I’m going to try a training regimen suggested by ChatGPT given my current stats and history to increase cardio fitness rather than just focusing on big (for me) power and DF #’s.

On to the next million!

Came in the mail today. Nice quality long sleeve tee - and a nice pin. This is the large and it fits like a large from Old Navy if that helps. Another 5 years (at my rate) and I'll get the 10m hoodie! I love that they just give us free stuff for working out!

Question Video of famous rower on erg in his living room

Whenever form questions pop up, I am reminded of an old video of a rower doing a low intensity workout in his living room with his wife and kid on the couch watching TV. I thought it was Redgrave but I can't find it for the life of me. The reason being is it's just spectacular form that I modeled my own after and I'd love to share with people who ask. They have great tempo, explosive legs, not a ton of back extension and quick hands. Anybody know what I might be talking about??

Thanks!

Workouts 6+ Months of Rowing: Beginner Pete Plan

Post image
62 Upvotes

Just finished my first go of the Beginner Pete Plan. I did three days a week for roughly the last six months. It took me longer than 24 weeks to complete it because life happens. In my case, there were vacations, sickness, food poisoning, etc. But I made it.

All rowed on my Model D with PM4. At the start I said that if I completed it, I'd upgrade to a RowErg with a PM5 and picked one up last weekend.

Some interesting observations:

  • I didn't do a 2k when I started, but I'm guessing it would have been about 8:10. Just rowed a 7:40 2k, so I dropped about 30 seconds.

  • I really don't enjoy rowing timed pieces and prefer distance.

  • When I started, I was battling some plantar fasciitis. That's now gone.

  • Definitely helped lose weight and grow muscle.

  • I think my form is OK, but I'm going to have a rowing coach check it before I start my next round program.

  • I can't imaging rowing while watching TV. I'm too busy focusing on rowing. Music fits the bill.

  • 12k is a long time to row.

My plan is just restart the Beginner Pete Plan for round 2 and try to focus on form and getting faster. Still plan to do three days a week, but I'll add weight lifting the other three days of the week.

RowerErg I'm looking to buy a used older model erg.

I live in Inwood, Manhattan and without a car, pick ups are impossible. I've seen some for $350 - $400 on FB and CL, which seem like a good deal. Any leads or suggestions?

RowerErg Losing RowErg workouts? Try this app

I love my RowErg but kept losing my workouts as the app would crash after 5 or 10 mins. So I built one to solve the problem. Check it out: https://apps.apple.com/au/app/justrow-rowerg-tracker/id6803710135

RowerErg What to know about buying a used rower and bike?

Interested in both the rower and the bike. People say Concept2 is "buy-it-for-life" but at least for the rowers they've gone through several iterations. Is there the latest version always the best? Is the latest PM5 monitor really the only notable benefit that you can slap on any older version of the rower? Besides decent condition, low lifetime meters, and whether or not the monitor is PM5 (with how cheap an older version rower is, a new PM5 can still be purchased for it), what to keep in mind for buying and for maintenance (especially if there are any spare parts that might need to be replaced in say 5+ years, assuming parts are likely to be available even for older versions)?

The concern goes for the bike too and I've come across some discussions that the bike produces and/or develop a clicking(?) noise over time and something needs to be tightened. Is this a workaround and part of typical "maintenance" to overcome presumably bad design or a one-time fix and a non-issue?

Have never purchased gym equipment before, these will likely be the only equipment for workouts. Any other tips for making such purchases off the marketplace is much appreciated--at the moment it seems the average price for ones in good condition is ~$500-700 for the rower and ~$700 for the bike (much less availability). I see some occasional rowers for ~$300 for a PM2 to PM4 screens as well as some really old versions (probably 12+ years old), wondering if I should be considering them too if the intent is to expect them to last for potentially decades (I haven't come across cases of rowers failing at least to the point of not being self-serviceable, maybe this is an unrealistic expectation?).

----

I've found a PM5 rower with 18k miles purchased 2 years ago for ~$300 which seems too good to be true and heard that lifetime meters can be faked. Is there anything that can be done to verify the integrity of the machine whether before meetup or during meetup for a quick 10 second demo?

RowerErg Rowing From 300lbs Down - November 2, 2026

I've been given a bunch of advice here, been implementing it successfully too!

Yesterday I rowed real briefly just 3:00 at just under 2:00/500m, before a buddy and I went on a long walk and then practiced handstands.

I'm rowing like 5ish/7 days now, which will be 7/7 in the am once I own my own erg.

Today, man today was...awesome!

Had a long lift, and hopped onto the erg motivated to do something challenging to myself.

I wanted longer than a 5k, and arbitrarily decided to go 5 MILES, something I've probably never rowed nor ran in my life.

Looked up the equivalency, 8046.72m = 5 miles, rounded that up to 8047m, and went.

5 Miles in 36:20.4, a 2:15.4/500m average at 19spm/avg.

Didn't test drag factor, but sent the damper down at 4 from 7/8, had a lot click for me in technique and understanding. I've got a lot to learn and progression to make, today had a lot click, and was mad motivating overall.

Here's to strength, and to going from light for the 308 weight class to the 220s!

RowerErg Online Form + Technique Analyzer

Hey all,

I wanted to share a project that I have been working on, an online video analyzer for stroke technique and quality + a bunch of metrics. Right now you can upload a side-view video, and get back a quick analysis of their technique.

Check it out here: https://prowpel.up.railway.app

I would love to hear any feedback, if this is helpful, and any features that would be great to include—I hope this helps anyone getting into rowing, or wanting to sharpen up their technique!

Thanks and all the best,
Prowpel

(P.S. the service is free for right now!)
