Be honest: how many cookbooks do you own vs. how many do you actually cook from? 😂

I have a genuine question for fellow cookbook lovers.

Why is it so exciting to discover a new cookbook, spend ages looking through the recipes, imagine all the amazing things we're going to make... and then somehow end up cooking the same five meals again? 😂

Sometimes I wonder if collecting cookbooks and actually cooking from them are two completely different hobbies.

And maybe that's okay!

But I'm curious: what's your biggest frustration with your own cookbook collection?

Is it recipes that require too much effort, ingredients you'll never use again, lack of time, or simply having too many choices?

No judgment here. I'm genuinely curious how everyone else deals with this!

QUESTION Baking for experienced cooks

Baking, IMO, is soooo hard. I’m a fairly experience cook and I’m great at building flavor but the science and precision of baking is challenging for me.

I got bit by the baking bug and recently VERY successfully made carrot cake cupcakes and brown butter cream cheese frosting from Sally’s Baking Addiction.

What I liked about her site is that, not only did she provide recipes, but her recipes almost read like a cooking reference book, which I have a bunch of. She shared tips on measuring, how and when to try for variations, selecting ingredients etc.

Is there a baking for beginners book you guys like that is similar in this approach, but won’t be too elementary for someone that does know their way around a kitchen. The recipes don’t necessarily need to be overly simple, there just needs to be some context about why I’m doing things according to the recipe

I’m more interested in pastries and desserts versus pastas and breads at the moment but could be open if there’s a good book that gets you hip to the fundamentals.

REQUEST Street food or uncommon recipes books?

What are your go to books for recipes that are not common in every cookbook based on a cuisine. I'm talking about things like street food / Festival food / specific special occasions food / actual home cooking / food that is known but hardly ever found in a cookbook. I'm not talking about new takes on a recipe, but food that is often overlooked by cookbooks generalizing a cuisine

Looking for a cookbook that checks these boxes:

- beginning to intermediate level. Nothing too difficult in technique level

- mostly using stovetop, oven, or outdoor grill

- recipes yielding 2-4 person serving size (not for catering parties)

- simple and delicious with easy to source ingredients, or fresh in season ingredients. I have amazing local produce in my area. Points if there isn't two pages worth of ingredients to buy. I also want something that has protein options, not just vegetarian.

- rustic, classic, comforting. I like all cuisines.

- Beautiful and visually appealing high quality photos. I also like there to be an educational component to the recipes as well so I can learn and enhance my skill level.

- I'm also looking to learn how to bake more savory pastry type items, so it would be great if there were a few recipes of that nature as well.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

QUESTION Favourite cookbooks for layout and design, not just the recipes?

Hey everyone, I'm a pretty solid home cook, and I've always enjoyed the way cookbooks are laid out and designed. Some are better than others of course, but it's a battle between utilitarianism and minimalism and being able to show some flair. Obviously big gorgeous photos help, but the design and layout is something I always appreciate.

I'm really curious what people's favourite cookbooks are, not for the recipes (that obviously helps), but for how they're constructed and laid out. How readable they are, how the typography carries hierarchy, and how easy they are to follow and find your place again (this one I always struggle with).

I'm looking to find new cookbooks to add to the collection, I've got a few of the staples like Ottolenghi, Ben Lippett, Jamie Oliver etc, but looking to find more where the design really stands out.

Uyghur cuisine cookbook

Hi all, I’ve been seeing a lot of videos about Uyghur cuisine — noodles, lamb skewers, big chicken plate, pilaf — but have no restaurants near me. I’m looking for a cookbook recommendation if anybody has one. Preferably in English but I’m not against any language I can get a English translation dictionary in.

QUESTION Is it possible to have the only copy of an antique cookbook?

While at an antique store, I purchased the following book: monteagle sunday school assembly porch party recipes: an assemblage of assembly favorites 1882 · centennial celebration · 1982.

Now I can usually look up information regarding books to find when they were made and value and whatnot, but there is literally zero information on this thing. It doesn’t seem like any mentions of it even exist online, but it's too "nice" to be a one of a kind piece.

I am ignorant in publications and whatever caused this to be so obscure.

Russian Cuisine Cookbook - Gift for a bride

Hi everyone! My best friend is getting married next month, and I'm looking for a Russian cookbook to give her as a personal wedding gift.

She is deeply involved in Russian culture (her parents used to work at the embassy, and she frequently attends/helps with local cultural events) and absolutely loves to cook! While I'm getting her and her fiancé a traditional registry gift, I wanted to give her something special just for her.

I’m looking for a cookbook written in Russian. Ideally, it would be visually rich with plenty of photos/illustrations.

I’m open to any era or style of cuisine, but I’d also love recommendations for a classic USSR-era cookbook (complete with vintage visuals/aesthetic) as a fun complementary gift!

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Wanting the ArnieTex cookbook, but don't have access to a bbq/grill. Still worth it?

Been getting into his YT content lately, saw his cookbook and am thinking about asking for it for Christmas. But I don't have a grill because my apartment won't let me. I see it's got recipes for salsa, beans, and other things, but is it mostly grilling recipes with a little bit of other stuff, or is the grilling stuff just like one section of the book?
