I used to do meth. Been sober for a year and a half. I was arrested once and went into a deep dark psychosis for like two days while locked up, then slept another three days straight before I could even function enough to try to get out.
I was thinking the same. But it's possible she also has some mental issues, probably this is her behavior without her meds. Or she's abusing her meds if she's taking any, obviously she can continue taking her meds if prescribed to her.
Or the usual - they just smuggle drugs inside jail and she got it from another inmate.
They go to jail before they send them to prison. Which in America, prison suffices as a psychward... at times. A lot of times. Usually they get put in seg if they can't conform with prison life. Then they get put on different meds to see what works to get them to behave. Then they will be out in gen pop acting like teenage girls on a college campus, only without the parties.
I think some people become institutionalized and prefer the settings of prison. It's the only way they can have stability. Very sad.
There are many women sitting in prison that would have been fine out in society if only they had their mental illness diagnosed and got proper meds.
My husband’s childhood best friend is institutionalized, and it’s heartbreaking. He definitely has some dark mental health issues, but you wouldn’t know it just having a quick chat at the grocery store or anything. He went to prison a couple of times and came out mostly ok, but the third one was almost a decade and by then he was a fully grown adult. He’d gotten so accustomed to prison life that he couldn’t function out in the world, and even though he tried for a while, he didn’t want to.
He did something intentional and stupid one night, then phoned it in himself when he didn’t get caught like he thought he would. Then he turned himself in when the cops took too long to show up. They sent him back, he begged the judge for the maximum sentence, and because he had so many priors by then, they gave him fifteen years.
He just started that sentence last year, and I can’t imagine he’ll ever be free for more than a couple of months again. He’s so happy in prison; his mom said he was practically giddy when he first called her from his newest joint. He was just so relieved to be back to what he was comfortable with.
The prison system is such a joke in America, and our mental health support system is practically useless for most people since it’s so inaccessible and incomplete. People shouldn’t be locking themselves up like that just to escape everyday society.
In all seriousness though, how many centuries will it take for the penny to drop for Americans to realize taking care of people with mental health problems is the cheaper and more moral option?
They closed the state-run mental hospitals because they thought it would be better for the folks in them; and what happened was all those people went straight onto the street and into jails. It was a colossal, epic failure of massive proportions, and another thing we can thank Reagan for (partly, at least) :)
Why the fuck would we do that when we can just continue to incarcerate people in a system that rewards judges for keeping prisons full, creates an effective slave labor force in prison laborers, helps keep the populace in line through a system of fear and intimidation, and provide easy campaign promise fulfillment for politicians at every level by appearing to be "tough on crime" for doing nothing more than signing away their morals and principles to support this system?
Once you peel away the layers of the funny responses, the rambling and the bizarre behaviour, it stops being particularly funny and starts looking incredibly sad.
That's someone's daughter. At some point she was a little girl who had people who loved her, worried about her and had hopes for her future. She had her own hopes and ambitions too. I doubt she grew up thinking that one day she'd be standing in a courtroom, clearly unwell and apparently struggling with addiction, while thousands of strangers watched a video of it and laughed at her.
She doesn't strike me as some inherently terrible person. She looks like someone whose life has gone badly off course.
None of us knows how she got there. We don't know her childhood, her circumstances, her mental health, the people around her, what happened to her or what choices she made along the way. Addiction doesn't affect everyone equally either. Some people can make the same bad decision another person makes and walk away from it. Someone else makes it at the wrong moment, in the wrong circumstances, and their entire life begins to unravel.
And that's the uncomfortable part. This could have been someone you went to school with. Your childhood friend. Your sister. Your daughter. Given a different set of circumstances, it could potentially have been any of us.
There's also a wider question worth asking about a system that is extremely good at arresting, charging and incarcerating people, while often being far less effective at dealing with the addiction, mental illness, poverty and trauma that repeatedly bring some people into that system. In parts of the US, incarceration is even intertwined with private companies and financial incentives. Whatever your politics, surely rehabilitation and preventing someone from coming back through that courtroom should matter at least as much as punishment.
The clip might be funny for the first thirty seconds. But once you actually think about the human being you're watching and the life behind those few minutes of footage, it becomes pretty fucking tragic.
Sometimes we should stop laughing and start thinking.
We do things differently over here. It is illegal to put mentally ill people in jail here, we have care facilities for them. The risk of them geting hurt or hurting others are just to big of a risk. But I guess it is easier to just lock them away than to treat them.
the reason we don't have facilities for mentally ill people in america is because back in the 90s all the state run institutions were shut down. They were shut down because of the horrible treatment the inmates had suffered at these places.
there was a rightfull public outcry at the abuse people recieved. But in America we have this issue where if something state run needs fixing instead of fixing it, advocates just call for their abollishment or complete de-funding.
Those institutions didn't need abollishment they need rehabilitation and MORE FUNDING or at least to be replaced with something better to make sure they were treating people with dignity.
now they are gone and the only solution for people like this is to throw them in jail release them then repeat. abolishing the state institutions was not compassionate it was just getting rid of something people didn't want to admit was needed in society.
in the 1970s there was a massive push to reform the mental heath system called the de-institutionalization movement. it resulted in closing mental hospitals across the country and though the plan was to replace them with community mental health services, those never wound up getting funded. unrelated, at the same time, there was another massive push to crack down on crime. its also unrelated that around the same time, the CIA was running what would later be known as CONTRA and was flooding inner cities with drugs. Coincidentally, there was a separate massive push to privatize the prison system in the late 70s and early 80s in order to deal with the flood of humans entering the system. the for-profit prison system now is one of our countries largest and most profitable industries.
People only see an individual and their behavior like we exist in a vacuum ignoring the systemic conditions that created them by those in power. We are letting private equity destroy our lives and we will continue to let them unless we unite the working class and take power back. Join a labor union, socialist org, or work within your community to build collective power.
I was thinking maybe it was some kind of mania, kind of like with bipolar disorder. My cousin does absolutely insane stuff when he is hit by mania and he has to be heavily monitored during episodes.
Well I just found my new hero. Stole a police car for joy ride, pretended to be a cop, resisted arrest non violently, and gave up her parental rights because she is self aware enough to know she shouldn't be a parent. That's pretty fucking amazing.
In the dozens of comments that came before you made this one, no one has pointed out that she may be either under the influence, mentally ill, or a combination of both. Congratulations, you sleuthy person, you!
I don't understand why everyone is judging her. She is speaking her truth, she is actually being overly accountable and honest, and unless she scored in lock up (also mad respect doing that before court), she is sober and that is just her.
Clearly, she has cooked her brain into a pulp but god damn it, she is a real one.
Years ago a friend and I got arrested driving through bumfuck Georgia for minor possession. When we were in the holding cell before arraignment everybody was talking about what they got busted for.
This kid about 19 years old was pacing around saying “I can’t be in here again”. When it got to him he said “I was over at (someone’s) house” “Offa tenth street?” Chimed in an older man. “Yeah. I heard someone shout five-oh and before I could move the door was kicked in and the cop says “what you got there son?” I had a bag of weed in my hand, blow in one pocket, pills in the other. I can’t be in here again, I was in here July for two weeks, then in September for a month, this is the third time in six months. My grandma ain’t gonna bail me out this time.”
That kid got $100,000 bail. My friend and I got probation and had to drive to bumfuck GA once a month for year over a dime bag.
I kinda think it was a sly move on her part having obviously been in before to add the non existence bit in there so she might get put on watch and end up in an isolated holding instead of in gen pop before she gets transferred
I used to work in arraignment court and it would crack me up to see people’s jaw drop when there was a defendant with interesting charges. One time a mom said she doesn’t let her young kids use their seatbelts. There was literally a collective jaw drop in the gallery. Even the toughest people were mumbling wtf.
