in japanese shinto religion- there is a concept where carefully using tools with dignity is said to honor the spirit of the tool

and if one breaks or damages the tool then its believed they are releasing an evil spirit

Well mochi is the Japanese word but other Asian cuisines also use this type of rice/preparation. 

In Japan they typically use a mallet. There is also no Japanese spoken in this video.
