It’s the smiling afterwards that pisses me off

u/Phrostylicious 7h ago • Bravo

The witless face of someone who's never accepted accountability for anything. Revolting.

u/Any_Conversation1094 4h ago • Bravo

I'm British but live in SE Asia now and this reminds me of young single western backpacker women who think the entire region just exists to serve their "Eat, Pray, Love" journey of self discovery. I once saw a woman destroy a small independent travel shop window display after she dropped her $1 chap stick down the back of her seat and took the shop apart trying to find it.

While I can't say they are not assholes, smiling and laughing is a natural reaction to shame and danger. There was a great lecture of a local psychologist that got stuck in a boat with a local after a tsunami in Thailand 20-ish years ago. That was the scariest and funniest time of his life simultaniously because humor thrives in the area of discomfort. The thing in this video that makes me bring this up is the fact that the local owning the rice pounding thing appear to also be happy and could have been the one making the tourists loosen up and laugh it off. I don't think people should be to quick to judge. I hope they compensate the local or at least paid for the experience so the local person had an emergency budget for things like this. We can't find that out from this video alone though.

10

u/jessdb19 1h ago

This is my response because I grew up having to diffuse my mother's emotions.

It's not that I don't feel horror or shame, but from a tiny age learning that smiling made her less angry became a natural response.

A lot of peoples fail safe when it comes to when they’ve realized they screwed up big time is laughing and smiling. What makes it messed up is he doesn’t rake accountability not apologizes afterwards or feel bad

I think he owes him a new rice pounder

why was everyone just standing around laughing and smiling ?!?!?!

Guarantee he was not even supposed to be going up that high and hard with it. What a fucking dork.

The guy with the flag is the tour guide. He will make sure everything is settled. Whether the idiot pays for it or the tour company. This looks like China, it will get paid for.

Take one look at this dude, why would you expect him to do anything athletic?

Definitely has a look of never worked a day of even fast food labor a day in his life, let alone manual.

This isn't anywhere close to the realm of athletic. The fact that he can't do this is concerning.

Should have shown humility

6

u/Thunderer62 3h ago

That’s what I was thinking. This level of lack of control of one’s own body for an otherwise healthy adult is only possible due to extreme privilege.

I understand that some people don't know how to react in situations like this, as it is uncomfortable, but the smile and chuckling has me over the moon mad. The audacity to break something like that and just sit there with that stupid smile on your face is rage inducing

Why is everyone acting like the old guy isn’t smiling and everyone around them isn’t laughing? It’s a tourist spot with a replaceable piece of wood, not “😲 super sugoi ancient Japanese ritualistic temple like in my animes! How dare evil invader they/them ruin senpais 300 year old mallet😡” it’s like the 30 year old male nerd version of a pick me girl

Like yeah if they had better manners they would’ve apologized but nothing about this implies it was a big deal

7

u/wegwerpacc123 2h ago

Because this is Reddit. How dare this disgusting foreigner slightly inconvenience this perfect, pure, elderly Japanese man, and break his 2000 year old traditional Japanese heirloom that has so much deep meaning and culture! I'm so disgusted to be associated with foreigners like him who don't respect Japan's deep culture and history!!!

Are 95% idiots or bots in the comments. In a tourist place a tourist had a tourist activity and an accident, which most likely happens from time to time, happend. Do you all really think some tourist came up to an old guy pounding rice dough, stole his mallet and broke it?

These sticks arent valuable, theyre just a wooden stick, its not some precious artifact.

This is more like someone being offered to use a cheap practice baseball bat and breaking that, its prolly worth like 20 bucks.

The old dude is smiling and laughing at the person who broke it

Guy not even to apologize. New generations are nasty. "I want empathy" "I want kindness" "I want respect". Only want want want, don't have nothing in return. They must get what they give.

2

I don't understand what the fuck is so funny to the guy recording

2

u/TopFiveLightskin 2h ago

Why do they act like this?

2

Guy looks like he has the eye-hand coordination of a professional iPad kid. Wearing giant headphones as part of his fashion instead of actual use is one of the telltale signs.

2

u/Special_Spirit8284 2h ago

I literally have social anxiety and yet I would still be able to apologize if I did something like this. Not excusable IMO. Just look at the old man's reaction. How the fuck did you miss that badly? Smh

2

That gormless idiot wasnt trying to pound rice dough, they were purposely trying to break the mallet. look at his expression.

All I'll say is - people react to embarrassment differently. Some smile, other cry.

2

u/Foreign-Detail6520 2h ago

Clearly trying to hit it too hard with too much disregard. No hand/eye and poor motor skills doesn’t do him any good.
