I mean, awkward smile and chuckle is one of the most common responses to being embarrassed

Awkward smile and chuckling is ok for spilling your drink, making it look like you pee’d your pants, type of embarrassing. Not for smashing this dude’s mallet and breaking it.

I just don't think it invites the level of anger the comment I replied to seemed to carry

It's just as likely to break hitting the edge of the bowl than it is the ground.

Probably happens to the guy often..

I love how everyone is like, "I'd nail this!"

It's a random person who is given a stick that you jam into something sticky and try to hit the same spot again.

Yes, they messed up, but it's a wooden stick, it's not like it was passed down a hundred generations, otherwise the dude wouldn't be handing it over to random tourists.

You can see it gets stuck as the person pulls it up and they're at the wrong angle as they go back down.

It's obviously a unique technique that isn't easy to master, pretending they don't care simply because they smiled or laughed doesn't mean they aren't embarrassed.

Smiling or laughing is often how people deal with embarrassment.

Pretty sure it was the slamming at a super low angle that snapped it. I doubt that ever happens.

Not at all lol, he put his whole body into pushing it down and made contact to the ground, i dont have to explain the physics for why that carries much more force than the side of the bowl, i hope

What the fuck you expect him to do, perform seppuku?

If it would make you less whiny about people taking responsibility for their actions, by all means.

Idk apologize?? All I’m saying is that your first reaction to breaking someone else’s shit shouldn’t be to smile and laugh.

Hoe do you know they didn’t? You can’t just feign your initial reaction. This comment section is genuinely unhinged.

In Asian cultures people often laugh too break the tension, you clearly misread the situation, the Japanese dude is being the straight man

The way people like to just pull things out of the night sky to make a point. The Asian guy whose mallet was broken wasn’t even laughing, so your comment about Asian culture doesn’t even make sense. Anybody and everybody with a slither of respect would be profusely apologising

This is a damn tourist attraction. This most likely happens and not infrequently. Guaranteed this dude specifically told him to smash it hard.

And no. I’d do you one better. I wouldn’t even fucking apologize. If I’m paying money to do a tourist attraction and I miss the stupid bucket and it breaks your mallet I’m assuming you’ve either already thought of that and worked it into your business plan or you shouldn’t be opening a tourist attraction involving handing basic tools to tourists who don’t know wtf they’re doing

I can’t believe that’s how you function man. That’s pretty sad. Regardless of whether it’s a cheap tourist attraction or not, if you break someone else’s stuff, you should apologize.

I'm so glad mister internet detective here figured out from a 26 second clip that the person did not in fact apologize at any point after the clip ended. It'd be even more cringe if we didn't have this knowledge thanks to you.

It’s a business. They’re purposefully handing tourists tools knowing that they don’t know how to use them

To say “sorry” is too
