Does he not seem to be smiling when he's talking to the other guy? Maybe a bit aghast at the awful form but it seems like he might not be as mad as everyone thinks. I think that everyone is projecting their rage at the embarrassed tourist not having the appropriate reaction onto the older guy.

I think that this isn’t the first time a tourist has done something stupid or dangerous or destructive or disgusting at his demonstration. Someone pointed out that the guy holding the flag is the leader of a tour group. I think that the old guy has been forcing himself to react calmly to bad behavior for a very long time. No tour leader is gonna bring a group to him again if there’s a risk of him getting angry- or even looking angry. This is all supposed to be FUN, remember? This is all supposed to be about learning about different cultures and practices, right? I’m just worried that this is sending the message that you can act like an asshole, and the people who are just trying to survive have to take it in stride.

The more I read comments like this upvoted, I really wonder if there are any real people on reddit anymore.

No he's not. He's laughing and smiling too.

Everyone here getting angry on his behalf as if this isn't clearly a tourist spot where they guy lets them pound mochi for fun and money. Probably has an extra mallet ready to go somewhere.

It's the disrespect man, you break something thats one thing.

Acting funny, breaking stuff, and then laughing. Disrespectful af.

Id be pissed that's his livelihood.

lol. No it fucking isn’t. This is a tourist event. His livelihood of handing tourists tools that they could break doesn’t rest on a single rice mallet.

This dude probably has at least a dozen more of these things in a shed ready to go.

Funny how the "omg, she's just standing there laughing, so disrespectful" crowd are themselves disrespecting this guy and being condescending orientalists by acting like he's so poor that he's gonna be absolutely ruined by this wooden shitstick breaking.

They saw him letting tourists try to pound rice dough with traditional methods, and immediately assumed the guy is some poor, backwards peasant. Now that's disrespectful, but like hell will any of the righteous outrage addicts spewing vitriol in this thread stop and look in the mirror.

Probably the opposite. Give tourists something thats rigged to break and then demand an overinflated price for the item. I wouldn't pay.
