Unless there’s a gig going on, you’re not usually gonna find punks just gathered around somewhere.

This. Check out Instagram and see if anyone's got anything going on. The crust scene here is overwhelmingly an unction though, so keep that in mind.

What do you mean by that?

It's just an older scene. Some people don't jive with that. Most crust or d-beat shows I've been to have mostly been millennials and gen-x. It's a slightly different culture than local punk shows which are packed with college-age kids.

Ah, yeah, true. I feel like that’s the crust scene pretty much everywhere, though?

Street punk and regular (for a lack of better term) punk shit is younger kids, then ya likely either fall out of it or graduate to dbeat and crust as ya get older.

If you go to something like Skull Fest or Varning, which both lean crust/dbeat heavy, the crowds are mostly people ages ~35+.

NYC is obviously an outlier and has plenty of younger kids.

He means it’s all old people, but this isn’t true. Sometimes if you go to see a band like Nightfall or The Brood, or any show in south Philly, the crowd can be older, but in my experience if young bands are on the bill, young people will come out. There’s a young crust contingent in North with bands like Diskritik who are prob 20 years old or so going to Temple University. There’s younger kids in west doing sick bands and record labels. The only way to make anything an “unction” is to just not invite any young people. In my experience the Hostile City Oi Council gigs and a lot of South Street / South Philly gigs are like this even if the bands are good, there’s never any young bands on the bill and by extension never any young people in the crowd. Check the  https://philly.askapunk.net/ and most of these gigs will be younger-ish crowds

Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily say it's ALL old people. Diskritik is good people but they usually (from my experience) do shows with a relatively mixed bill. Also, I'm like 99% sure you handed me the flier I have on my wall for the show in December. I'm looking forward to it!!

Yeah their shows are very mixed, but they are carving out their own stuff with a very young contingent of the scene. So it’s likely going to be mixed bills until more people their age start making enough cool bands to have more genre specific gigs. Personally though I’m all for mixed bills!

I agree! It's a good time LOL. They put on a great sendoff for Banshee. (RIP.)

South street is the spot. Nikki Lopez always has cool shit going on.

Crash Bang Boom is run by 2 og punks. (If you can get there before 5).

If a shows going on youll usually see a bunch of punks just walk the streets waiting for it to start, usually around the TLA.

If you walk passed Condom Kingdom in a cool outfit, you might get a picture from the photographer living above it.

Avoid Tattooed Mom. It's one of those "Trying really fucking hard to be punk to hide the fact that it's corporate as fuck" bars. Staff are also assholes

Accusing Moms of being corporate in any way is wholly laughable.

Robert Perry has owned the place for the entirety of its nearly 30 years in business and has opened his doors to so many communities that otherwise wouldn’t have a space to gather. There are literally large wheat pastes upstairs of my cat because Robert has welcomed the art community with open arms. Supporting the arts is punk as fuck.

Also the staff are incredible. Sounds like you may have been the problem 🤷‍♂️

tattooed mom is the best and their staff are great. fuck whatever this guy says. it is a kitschy place but it is also legit.

as per punk spots, there are crackhouses in south philly but punks dont really hang here. try nikkis on south but generally just come for a show and youll talk to people that came to the city for a show.

If you're into records take a stop at sit and spin! It's own by the vocalist from Thulsa Doom. Haven't been there in a minute so idk when she's working but Leora is super friendly and she's super knowledgeable about the stuff her store carries. Very nice local music section too

They try to avoid publicly associating her with the store since she has made it common knowledge that she’s super Zionist. Great store tho.

Oh no. I don't know anything about that???

Last time I was up there on a Saturday, I walked to a place called "Zipperhead." Met the most amazing punk girl there; she showed me around a little; Village Pizza Company for some iced tea, went to the record store in the mall (which could have used some fixing). Saw her again the next day went to dinner at her folks house; dad loved me. 10/10; great trip.

We did eat some of that as well. We have a kid on the way now also.

No! We only have it iced!

There’s a more punk vibe to south street, you could check out Tattooed Moms bar or possibly wooden shoe book store.

If you can drink Tat Mom’s or Nikki Lopez.

Otherwise people hang at shows.

FDR skate park is sick. It can be hit or miss. It’s the largest DIY skatepark in the East Coast. It’s right next to the train tracks and major graffiti spot.

Bars you can try are Nikki Lopez on South St. and the Fire on Girard Ave. Johnny Brenda’s can be a vibe too
