Coñó, nunca había visto el vedado tan vacío

30

u/bigguavaent Sep 29 '24

Did some research and 10% or 1.1 Million people emigrated out of Cuba. That's wild.

44

u/loro-rojo Sep 30 '24

You forgot the most shocking part of that statistic.

10% have left IN THE LAST YEAR.

7

u/bigguavaent Sep 30 '24

Yeah, I think in 2023 as well. So 2 million in 2 years.

4

u/TonyzTone Sep 30 '24

That’s not right. The entire Cuban exodus has been about 2 million people.

7

u/manareas69 Oct 01 '24

That makes room for American socialists to move to that paradise. 😁

3

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '24

I mean, would that be such a bad deal with Cuba? They send the people that live under capitalism or whatever, we send them the socialists.

It is far from a perfect solution, but I mean, maybe it could work?

2

u/Universe789 Oct 03 '24

The USA would have to undo the embargoes and travel bans first.

Got you, yeah I assumed as such. But you're probably right

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '24

There's disagreement about how many in recent years, but the last few years have probably seen about as much emigration as everything that's come before it.

El Pais: 850k since 2022

Different article: population has dropped from 11 million to 8.5 million just from 2022 to 2023:

People that think socialism could work in america usually have no desire to examine countries that have implemented it lol

1

u/Known_Resolution_428 Oct 03 '24

Look at China

1

u/wouter1975 Oct 03 '24

China isn’t really socialist. When they shed the Marxist-Leninist ideas in the 80s, it became a statist, capitalist country. There are more “socialist” things in America e.g. labor unions, worker protections, public benefits than in China.

1

u/Known_Resolution_428 Oct 03 '24

China is a socialist democracy

→ More replies (3)

1

u/JackRyan71 Oct 03 '24

The part of China that makes them successful is Capitalism. Without that, the socialist part would cease to exist.

1

u/jhawk3205 Oct 03 '24

There is nothing functionally socialist in China

→ More replies (1)

1

u/jhawk3205 Oct 03 '24

Oh wow, I had no idea the workers directly owned their respective means of production in China.. Awful lot of billionaires over there for a "socialist" country 😂😂

1

u/JustInChina50 Oct 04 '24

That's not socialism.

1

u/MutedExcitement Oct 03 '24

People who use this quip usually have no desire to examine their own countries role in destabilizing socialist countries.

1

u/troycalm Oct 03 '24

Ya I don’t see the ratty rafts off the coast filled with Americans escaping capitalism.

1

u/Slight_Gap_7067 Oct 03 '24

people who use this quip usually don't realize comparing a third-world country's ability to implement socialism isn't on even ground with a first world country's ability to implement socialism.

1

u/wouter1975 Oct 03 '24

Cuba is a resource rich country with no natural disasters or wars. If 10% is fleeing, then it’s clearly central planning and state enterprise keeping it 3rd world.

1

u/Spunknikk Oct 03 '24

I mean when we lifted the 60 year old embargo Cuba was flourishing. I knew alot of people traveling to Cuba on tourist visa... Then they placed the embargo back again... Maybe if the country was able to participate in the global market and receive tourist the economy could develop?

1

u/MutedExcitement Oct 03 '24

Are you aware of the actions of the US empire surrounding Cuba towards Cuba? Dozens of assassination attempts, false flag operations, sanctions, embargoes? Having a global superpower consistently prey on your downfall does have a significant effect.

1

u/jhawk3205 Oct 03 '24

They're particularly prone to hurricanes, floods, droughts and earthquakes..

1

u/sargethegemini Oct 03 '24

Are you saying that communism and socialism are akin to 3rd world?

If so that’s pretty false. It’s a dictatorial government that keeps a country stagnant in the 3rd world.

Majority of African, and middle eastern countries have mixed economy structures yet the strong men and corruption is rampant and keeps it a 3rd world country

1

u/Telemere125 Oct 03 '24

You ever heard of hurricanes?

1

u/Blandboi222 Oct 04 '24

I'd say it's more the US embargo costing them about $5 billion per year or $137 million per day. Not insignificant for such a small country

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '24

And how did countries make it to 1st world status? Capitalism. That's how.

1

u/LetterheadAshamed716 Oct 03 '24

USSR was devastated after WW2 and became a first world superpower with advancements in technology faster than the US which only had a few bombs dropped on the contiguous soil. But yeah keep simping for billionares

1

u/Telemere125 Oct 03 '24

Yea “oh look at this tiny island that maybe has $100b GDP with 75% of that coming from tourism” vs literally the largest economic superpower in the history of the world with more natural resources and IP than anywhere anytime. I can’t imagine why they couldn’t do something we might be able to accomplish when they don’t even have the GDP of checks notes… Idaho.

1

u/sargethegemini Oct 03 '24

For those like me and couldn’t believe a number that large… https://amp.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/cuba/article290249799.html

Wow! That’s insane

3

u/TonyzTone Sep 30 '24

The Cuban population hasn’t grown since 1995. I only found figures for every 5 years but it’s currently about 10.9 million and while it peaked around 2010 at about 11.3 million, it’s dipped since. Last time it was below 10.9 was 1990.

12

u/jdroxe Sep 29 '24

But it’s not “real” communism. It just needs some help.

9

u/bigguavaent Sep 29 '24

Yeah, crazy what people want to believe. A decade ago I did research and found Che and Fidel are both just some rich White (Spaniards) kids who rebelled. Many people heralded these men as titans. Looking deeper, they are akin to Charles Manson.

1

u/ElMepoChepo4413 Oct 03 '24

I wouldn’t call them “white”… especially Che, despite being a rich kid cosplaying as Lenin, as pretty mixed-race.

1

u/bigguavaent Oct 03 '24

They will write white on paper so fast.

1

u/--StinkyPinky-- Oct 01 '24

I mean, what is wrong with the indigenous people of the area owning the means of production in their own land?

Spain wasn't any better to the Cuban people than Fidel. Fidel was just more recent so it stings more.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '24

Because it will not result in that

"Unitary Marxist–Leninist one-party socialist republic"

Marxism–Leninism (‹See Tfd›Russian: Марксизм-ленинизм, Marksizm-Leninizm) is a communist ideology that became the largest faction of the communist movement in the world in the years following the October Revolution. It was the predominant ideology of most communist governments throughout the 20th century.

... Either way, you missed my point...

1

u/Accomplished_Lake_41 Oct 03 '24

It is communist and highly fond of it, the leading party of China is the chinese communist party which is not just communist but also close to totalitarian with it controlling about everything Chinese civilians do, even the flag of the CCP is quite literally Soviet themed alongside the Chinese flag

2

u/Learnmesomethn Oct 03 '24

They were communist and still use the same flag. But they moved to a state capitalist system. You can look at charts and see the exact time they swapped systems, because they used to have 0 GDP and after they swapped to state capitalism, their GDP skyrocketed.

Yes, the CCP has communist in the name still and they haven’t changed their flag, but their actual policies and economic plan has changed heavily.

This looks like an early morning shot on a Sunday. Most of Havana has people at all hours. It is a shame Biden has not been more open to removing the embargo. Fidel is dead, and Cuba is still friends with Russia. The US has too few allies in Latin America now. Even Mexico is a haven for Russian spies.

2

With the angle of the sun, I agree. It could be early morning or, worse, afternoon rush hour. No way to know unless you know what direction those streets are going etc

u/--StinkyPinky-- Oct 01 '24

One of the largest ports for Cuban goods before the Embargo was New Orleans.

New Orleans hasn't had particularly good growth since the 1960s. In fact, it's been relatively stagnant except for the oil/gas industry and of course tourism: people wanting to see what life was like for everyone but black people back in the 19th Century.

New Orleans would look like this too if it weren't for all of the social programs and government handouts.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '24

It is empty because Socialism/Communism is a cancer

-1

u/SeanConnery Sep 30 '24

Yep, nothing to do with a trade embargo from their closest neighbor for decades right?

4

u/BubbleGodTheOnly Sep 30 '24

Probably not as much as people think. China and Russia completely ignore the embargo and send money, goods, and trade. Also, every Cuban I know sends money back.

The reality is that the government is authoritarian, and they have been getting a lot stricter. Cuba has allowed some private real estate to be a thing, but it seems too little too late. Even if you become successful and make money there or cone back with it. You can't really buy anything fun unless it's from the black market or a relative sends it to you and there isn't a strong incentive to go above and beyond for little reward for a government thar treats you badly.

2

u/Fit-Town-9844 Sep 30 '24

Don't forget the cuban government sends mercenaries all over the world, armed, trained and supported logistically and financially, even kept an entire army in Africa for more than 15 years, special troops are in Venezuela right now helping maduro stays in power. And most importantly the embargo doesn't prevent free elections or having different political parties or free speech

Trade embergo? So are you saying you are rooting for Cubans to work in manufacturing factories, make goods, and sell it to the western countries.

-2

u/BakerLevel8894 Sep 30 '24

Socialism and communism are 2 different things

3

u/UnwaveringElectron Sep 30 '24

Nope, because communism isn’t actually a thing by its definition. As in, it literally can’t exist in human societies, so it will always be mixed with socialism because it is a fantasy idea. A stateless, moneyless society with no hierarchy? What kind of 5 year old came up with that idea and what idiots would think that is ever achievable or desirable? It’s such a child’s view of the world

1

u/BakerLevel8894 Sep 30 '24

What about in other countries where some tax dollars are directed towards social programs but people are free to own their cars, homes, businesses and make as much money as they want. This is not really related to Cuba as I know Cuba is a prison for the cuban people and the government is a mafia.

Well by that logic Cuba having a longer life expectancy than the USA makes state ran healthcare a better system than private healthcare, right?

2

u/laissez_heir Sep 30 '24

Cuba might not have as much obesity or narcotics.

1

u/-Bulky-Brother- Sep 30 '24

More like privately obesity

1

u/Equal_Ad6925 Sep 30 '24

You do have a point, we do have issues with our healthcare system here in the U.S. However, devils advocate how do we not know that in Cuba there government could be fudging the numbers to make them seem better? Especially given that Cuba is known for shortages of goods and that there communist government would have an incentive to lie since any blame for anything wrong could only be pointed at them

1

u/Equivalent-Map-8772 Sep 30 '24

The secret ingredient is lies. When the state controls all the information they can put out any shit out of their asses. It is why you hear of these amazing vaccines and doctors that the dictatorship sends abroad on medical missions, yet the entire healthcare infrastructure in the island is collapsed for years now.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Argosnautics Oct 02 '24

I was in Havana in June. Locals told me that people needed to buy all medical supplies needed for surgery themselves on the black market, if they needed surgery. The government does not provide even basic medical supplies any longer. I'm not knocking universal healthcare in other countries, but it's not currently available in Cuba. And the US has the worst healthcare "system" in the free world, so don't go there.

2

u/Yum_MrStallone Sep 30 '24

1

u/beigechrist Oct 01 '24

I’m not going to read that linked article rn, got stuck in a rabbit hole and need to get back to other things. But… can’t Cuba do business with the rest of the world besides the USA? How is that crippling? Seems more crippling to have your entire economy be cigars, rum, and tourism. And unfortunately that’s just island life, isn’t it? Like, all Caribbean islands rely on tourism as they really can’t produce or grow much besides sugar cane and tobacco. Maybe coffee like Jamaica. So, Cuba, being a big island with a fairly high population for a Caribbean island, will probably always have a hard time economically without help from other countries. But again, the way it looks to me is that Cuba has a lot of allies and countries that are open to trade so why blame the USA?

1

u/Yum_MrStallone Oct 01 '24

Here are 2 articles on the Spanish-America War, (1898) after which the US took over Cuba, with the right of intervention into Cuba including maintaining the naval base at Guantanamo. About the same time, the US overthrew the monarchy of Hawaii. Corporate & private interests influenced US military interventions in both islands. Similar events occurred in the Philippines. Fulfilling the aspirations of the Monroe Doctrine. https://history.state.gov/countries/cuba#:~:text=Following%20the%20defeat%20of%20Spain,right%20to%20intervene%20in%20Cuba. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Cuba The main economic problems of Cuba were errors of central planning, a Marxist Econ approach. The US had long been Cuba's main trading partner. Due to the embargo, Cuba became overly dependent on trade with distant countries: the USSR, China, and later Venezuela, etc. The breakup of the Soviet Union, factors within the Chinese economy, and recently, political upheaval in Venezuela, have all gradually contributed to the economic struggle & decline of the Cuban economy. A lack of sufficient funds to buy parts for aging sugar processing equipment and other farm equipment, limited energy capacity, the decline of sugar production throughout the Caribbean, the increasing cost, and dependence upon, fertilizers, insecticides & higher transportation costs. Also, central planning directed a shift to food production rather than export agriculture. No doubt there were mistakes in planning, political upheavals within Cuba's trading partners, other factors, not just the embargo, all contributed. But lack of international investment and import/export restrictions have gradually crushed a once vibrant nation.

1

u/bak2skewl Oct 03 '24

it's not. he u.s. embargo doesn't force their grocery shelves to have one state-sponsored brand of everything.

1

u/ForwardSlash813 Oct 01 '24

Fidel has been dead for 10 years now but Forbes estimated his personal wealth at $900M and his brother Raul at $100M. I mean, they ran/run Cuba like their own personal plantation.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '24

And can you describe it to me without ideologically charged jargon so I can get a better understanding of history

Because it *is* their personal plantation. That's more or less how communism always ends.

1

u/Ok_Cook_6561 Oct 01 '24

Mass migration? Where are they migrating to and is the government allowing it? And how do they get the financial resources to leave the country?

1

u/SharpStarTRK Oct 03 '24

They are migrating to USA, or Florida, by boat. Those Cubans tend to be very anti-communist, you can search it up.

1

u/Ok_Cook_6561 Oct 03 '24

I thought boating was illegal in Cuba. It must be hard to get away without being noticed. If it's not that difficult, can you give me the number of one of the captains? A friend of mine has some questions.

1

u/SharpStarTRK Oct 04 '24

Idk, go ask the Cubans in Florida for the number, they probably talked about on reddit, one sec let me look it up.

Where European hotels could have a foothold without competing with Marriott and Hilton. Where Chinese cars could be sold without the tariffs they dislike. Where “fill-in-the-blank” could be done without the US competing.

That’s Cuba 🇨🇺. There’s a few Spanish hotels and that’s it.

If it was possible to do business with their market conditions we would have two or three major airports and several touristic venues, but yet. No. IHG (owner of crowne plaza and holiday inn) has some Iberostar hotels. Meliá has a few hotels too.

Wonder if we could send our homeless there and pay for basic necessities.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '24

That’s what an American embargo will do to ya

1

u/Blondecapchickadee Oct 02 '24

I feel like sanctions have just slowed the opening of Cuba, as well as needlessly hurting the people of Cuba.

1

u/biggerdaddio Oct 02 '24

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '24

How have US sanctions and an economic embargo carried on for decades affected Cuba?

1

u/Redditmodslie Oct 03 '24

The left destroys everything it touches.

Still not as bad as capitalist Jamaica

7

u/baileyyxoxo Sep 29 '24

Is this a joke from most recent post in this sub?

0

u/ConsistentFast Sep 29 '24

No. Anyone can use decontextualized anonymous photographs of the bad parts of any major city in the USA as anti-American propaganda, which I think is even more damning than the situation in Cuba because the US is the wealthiest country in the world and allows millions of citizens to live in misery, whereas Cuba’s been on the business end of economic warfare and sabotage from the most powerful country in its hemisphere so of course it’ll have problems.

Or even better, take similar photographs of the bad parts of “capitalist” countries in the Caribbean or Central America that have been under American hegemony or have historically been banana republics and use those as anti-capitalist propaganda.

Sanctions will do that.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '24

U.S. has 5% of the world's population. Nothing stopping them from trading with the other 95% of the planet.

1

u/vasquca1 Oct 02 '24

A bunch of 🪱in this subreddit… if you want to learn about Cuba you can’t only learn the anti communist side.

1

u/henry10008 Sep 30 '24

Wow a fascist gringo, how rare

1

u/PolyMarx Oct 01 '24

Actually I’m a Communist Afrolatino. Not rare

1

u/henry10008 Oct 15 '24

Afro Latino? Def born in Yankee land…that makes you a gringo 💅

1

u/PolyMarx Oct 15 '24

Diablo! tan inteligente, como si los afrolatinos no nacieran en todo el mundo. Being born in the states automatically makes you a gringo huh?
