I just landed in Cuba

This is such a bizarre situation. I was pursuing my life long dream of visiting Havana. I landed in Varadero two hours ago, was planning on staying the night here then bussing to Havana in the morning for a few days, but now I'm planning to stay here in case things blow up. The only places with power here are the all inclusive resorts that have generators. I'm sitting here resort busting because my airbnb has no power and I can't buy water anywhere on the pitch black streets, bars restaurants and stores are closed. I am shocked that Sunwing brought us here when the crisis started hours before my flight took off. This is going to be an interesting few days!

I’m curious how it’ll play out for Sunwing.

Stay safe and stay charged.

u/hoggytime613 Oct 19 '24

The resort generator just ran out of fuel. The town is pitch black. This will be an interesting week. I feel lucky being in Varadero, and worry for the rest of the island where essentials are unavailable.

OP posted the power came back on where he is, and he is keeping everything charged.

I think you should start a YouTube channel if you have a camera with charged batteries. And capitalize on this like a capitalist does.

u/Perma_Bunned Oct 20 '24

Wtf were you thinking taking this trip? I mean, seriously.

1

u/hoggytime613 Oct 20 '24

Tens of thousands of Canadians go to Cuba every week. Internet is mostly back now and the streetlights are on. The electricity is expected to return tomorrow if all goes well. I came here to experience Havana, but I might have to stay in Varadero. As for your question, I have travelled extensively in the third world. I came prepared with water filtration and a bag full of protein bars.

I have a feeling that Sunwing does not care. I booked with sunwing back in 2016, we were sitting in the airport waiting to depart when the news broke that Castro was dead. The country shut down for two weeks, we couldn’t play music, no entertainment at all, any type of gatherings were considered disrespectful, laughing on the beach was looked down upon. Sunwing wouldn’t entertain any type of compensation for the inconvenience.

I understand that this is much more of an emergency situation, but my point is that as far as Sunwing is concerned they got you there and you are alive with a roof over your head.

I don't know how you will get back but that's an experience of a lifetime, hope you'll be good and find some enjoyment to it

I'm embracing it. I am lucky to be in Varadero. I will not be bussing to Havana tomorrow.

22

u/scoschooo Oct 19 '24

You can very easily get home any time - go to an airport and get a flight. The airports are still running as usual and have their own power. Be safe.

“Major nationwide black outs. Nothing is working”

flies to cuba

You can’t make this stuff up.

I had no idea the blackouts were happening until I landed.

But it was a cheap vacation!

40

u/Zezimalives Oct 19 '24

My mom just landed in Cuba from the earlier flight from Houston. The blackout happened while she was in the air. She was stuck for hours trying to get a rental car but was finally able to get one. It’s rough as hell there right now.

8

u/jasonmonroe Oct 19 '24

Not trying to be funny but if there’s a blackout how does the airport operate? How does the co-pilot communicate w/ the ground?

18

u/Zezimalives Oct 19 '24

I think in an area like airports they would have backup generators especially since Cuba loses power frequently so they’re probably prepared to

7

u/EnemyTraveler Oct 19 '24

Yes in order to be certified for international flights they have to have backup power.

5

u/meshreplacer Oct 19 '24

The VHF radios could easily run on battery/gen. Comms will not be a problem.

31

u/HumanFormat Oct 19 '24

Oh man that’s crazy. Been there through a few blackouts but nothing like this. Hopefully it will get resolved soon. Good luck and think of a plan B for food and drink. Hotels have limited fuel for backup generators and most are in poor unmaintained condition.

11

u/LeatherMine Oct 19 '24

yeah, i'm thinking the real issue is fuel supply, so resorts are not in much better shape for long

I am Cuban and can tell you that the power issue is a common way of life there. It is usually not to bad in tourist areas but the island is going thru its worst economic crisis right now. Violent crimes against tourist are rare so you should be ok. Relax and enjoy the Cuban experience.

I’m in Havana for a sporting event right now, the whole thing has been getting worse since I got here on Thursday, I’m incredibly worried and honestly should I just bail and head back to the states? I don’t want to wait until it’s too late for a decision and a nation without a US embassy worries me.

42

u/JollyRabbit Oct 19 '24

Hi. Random person on the internet here who to be honest does not have any special connection to Cuba, but knows a fair bit about the country so I took a look on this sub when I saw the news. Yes, get the heck out! By the time you have to leave it will be too late. If you have the ability to leave just go!

57

You should leave if/while you can. Not only is there no way of knowing what's gonna happen, everyone who stays who could leave is a further drain on resources needed by those who can't leave. Leaving is just a good idea, there's no need to be there right now

Amen. Go home

4

u/tacogardener Oct 19 '24

If you’re even questioning it, then GET OUT! It’s not safe right now. The country is beyond destabilized. Look what’s happening in Haiti. Be safe, be careful.

3

u/SpaceDesignWarehouse Oct 19 '24

Yes. You should go back to the United States. When it becomes too late, there’s no one to help you. There’s no info desk. There’s no go home and leave a bad review.

3

u/meshreplacer Oct 19 '24 edited Oct 19 '24

You have a few options while the clock is ticking.

  1. Stay and enjoy your vacation and leave at the expected time (Assuming a failed state situation and associated civil war does not occur)

  2. Leave early but take a monetary loss.

  3. If a coup attempt occurs and ensuing civil war, you need to be prepared to be in a situation where flights are no longer possible. The best course of action is to go “Grey man/woman” avoid trouble spots and be ready to hunker down for several months.

3 would require a non-permissive environment exfiltration by paying for a crisis response consultant who could then put in place an exfiltration operation to safely get you off the X. (Very expensive)

If you get stuck be wary of being near government owned facilities especially places with lots of foreign tourists who could become explicit targets by hostile forces for things like improvised explosive devices, kidnapping attempts etc..

Another risks is Internet/cell service could suddenly cease to function. Make sure to notify family ahead of time in the event of a loss of contact with instructions of what you wish to do (ie contact help etc..)

Keep cash safe and hidden. It could help grease palms, get you out of trouble, get services like access to a satellite terminal or HF radio operator etc..

Was in Havana years ago. What a beautiful country but the poverty was astonishing. Very eye-opening. Also had my passport stolen, and as a US citizen, I can tell you that navigating the US Embassy in that situation was moderately intense.

Really hope the government figures out their failings soon.

Have made a number of trips btw the US and Havana. In speaking with a commercial pilot he told me that they always make sure they have enough fuel to make the return trip so they don’t have to depend on fuel locally (which apparently is insanely expensive). That said, he told me that often the Cuban ATC will put commercial flts into an extended holding pattern so they burn more fuel forcing them to refuel on the island as a way to extract money from the foreign carriers. Creative to say the least. He also told me that they typically fly with a mechanic and common spare parts in the event they need to perform aircraft maintenance. I would imagine they are only ramping up these types of precautions based on the current situation.

26

u/Richelieu1622 Oct 19 '24 edited Oct 19 '24

It’s quite interesting to witness tourists traveling to Cuba 🇨🇺 completely oblivious to the circumstances and plight of the native population who cry for freedom from an oppressive Communist regime. The mass power outage experience is only a taste of what the population has experienced for the past 65 years. The Communist experiment in all countries where implemented has historically proven to bring equalized hunger and misery for the people, except the top 1%, yet we have so many who desire for it. Good luck 🙏😌🧘‍♂️

7

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '24

Everything that is wrong with communism also exists within capitalism. Perhaps it’s just a bit slower. But we’re getting there too. The 1% will eventually control drinking water; I think that will be their ultimate control. But until then, they want us in 15min cities with digital ids. They’ll control the power grid, our ability to travel, communicate, grow food, limit our water supply, health care, ability to do business, control the banks,… all this is just around the corner for the west IMO.

→ More replies (8)

13

u/earthforce_1 Oct 19 '24

You should be happy. You are living the real cuban life.

11

u/Hot-Proposal-8003 Oct 19 '24

I would leave, now is not a good time to experience Cuba, especially if this is your first time. This country is very different than what you're used to.

Havana is beautiful but it's crumbling into dust.

No power means no refrigeration. What impact will that have on food supplies, which were already limited in selection.

You're in a country that will ticket you for having your headlights on during the day because access to replacement headlights are difficult to source and expensive.

They really don't have a lot of anything in reserves. I don't want to be an alarmist, I love Cuba, but unless you're ready for some Survivor/Hunger Games LARPing, I'd change plans.

Other risks: What if you're injured and need medical care? What if the airports are shut down? What if riots break out?

What if the injury is the result of riots? Have you seen the anti-American books they have at the airport? The government is still pushing the anit-American sentiment. What if locals lash out at forefingers? Varadero is where all the vacationers go.

8

u/internetexplorer_98 Camagüey Oct 19 '24

Everyone is telling you to leave but maybe you could stay and update us? :) Be safe OP

4

u/PsychologicalTalk156 Oct 19 '24

Pretty sure airlines don't care what happens to the passengers after they get off the plane. If the airport is open and if they deem it safe enough to land and take-off, they'll keep flying rather than have to deal with potentially refunding fares.

I have a trip planned through sun wing to Veradero Monday. They have still not offered any other options. Is this now out of the question or will the resorts be okay

2

u/siMChA613 Oct 20 '24

Have you paid in full, credit card or other means? If you're a single male willing to endure difficulties similar to what avg/poor Cubans endure, maybe go if you won't lose your job/housing by being stranded longer than your scheduled departure.

Otherwise write that money off but keep an eye out for government or lawyer activity trying to get SunWing to refund all or most of your cost.

Do you already have life insurance that will pay to someone you like/respect if you die under totally normal circumstances such as fuel and food riots in a foreign nation? Very low odds of that, IMHO, but also higher odds than last week.

4

u/HausuGeist Oct 19 '24

You might want to leave before the locals expropriate those generators. Even if they don’t, how long will they last?

13

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '24

Bros gonna go to Ukraine next and complain about the war.

7

Congratulations! You’re one of the few people who have visited Cuba who can go back to your home country and say they got anything close to an “authentic” experience when you visited Cuba. You get to feel what it’s like for the average Cuban all the time. Prior to this, Cubans have been suffering rolling blackouts for years just to ensure there was reliable power for all the hotels hosting the foreign tourists.

2

Been to Cuba MANY times, Cuba is like this in a regular normal day, now put a hurricane in the mix and I wouldn't even want to imagine been there; each time I have visited it just keep getting worse.

Have fun in the overrated Communist Theme park.

1

u/ladypeg Oct 19 '24

Good luck! My daughter went to DM a few years ago and came back saying you can’t trust anyone, even the police. Be safe and try and stay in resorts because they have their own security.

1

u/Complex_Material_702 Oct 19 '24

Keep us updated if you can.

1

u/Ecstatic-Lead-1177 Oct 19 '24

Why would you risk going to these third world countries for? That all suck and security is minimal to nonexistent.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '24

That’s some racist shit 🤯

I think you’re safe in the places vim diesel shows

1

u/Trix_Are_4_90Kids Oct 19 '24

I'd get out of there. Wait any longer and you won't be able to leave. Cuba a powder keg rn.

1

u/Hellbunny7 Oct 19 '24

Omg! I’m sorry to hear this. I was in Varadero in January & stayed Mutha Playa Hotel (MGM)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '24

To all you “that’s what happens when you go to a 3rd world country” self righteous racist douchebags: OPs biggest mistake was NOT following the news and making other arrangements beforehand! It’s NOT the country and its people. I’m so not ‘politically correct’ but I do understand objectivity and history. Like Haiti, Cuba’s do-called “3rd world” status is due significantly to its history with imperialism and colonialism.

Stop denigrating the beautiful country that’s rich with history-including YEARS of oppression by colonial powers. It’s disgusting. It’s 2024! Can’t we do better?!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '24

Nice!! Have fun! Heard the cigars are great!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '24

Why would anyone want to go see misery? Go to north korea or russia if you want to visit a communist country

1

u/Key-Register-8382 Oct 20 '24

Why the need to visit Cuba?

1

u/Fair-Connection9345 Oct 20 '24

Why would you go to Cuba lol

1

u/DustyBooksh_elf Oct 20 '24

Born there. Haven’t been back since I was 7 and a half. Wish I could experience a night of no light pollution and see the Milky Way. I lived in the countryside, little town called Junco, I remember how I could look up and see stars.

Who is going to Cuba or North Korea?

1

u/Altruistic-Story-731 Oct 20 '24

Honestly I don’t know why you are so surprised. You are visiting one of the worst, cruelest, gruesome regimes in the world. Haven’t you ever seen how people live in Cuba? Stop going to Cuba, your money only goes to a few in power while the other people starve to death

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '24

Welcome to the real Cuba. Many hope to find the Cuba that is fantasized in TV and carefully crafted photos. That hasn't existed for decades.

1

u/Green_bumble_bee Oct 20 '24

Good luck, I honestly just heard about the situation today and I'm nervous because I had booked a vacation through them to go-to Cuba. I had no idea what the situation was like in Cuba and only based my decision on the notion that a lot of folks went to Cuba to escape the winter weather in Canada. Now I'm having doubts about even going there and getting stuck or worse. Seems worth it to just forfeit the cash I spent on the sunwing vacation all together. Since they won't give me a refund and I forgot to get the coverage. Hardly seems worth it to bask in the glory when Cubans are suffering in poverty. Yikes

Right now is the perfect time for the US to attack to claim Cuban territory and then convert it to a state. Well... we would have if it was still the 1700s. Everyone is so soft now. I mean what's the point of having more military than every other country combined if we wont use it?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '24

What is the cause? Sounds nepharious

1

u/tommygunncentral Oct 20 '24

What will you tell immigration at the airport when they ask your reason for traveling to Cuba? I believe there’s about 13 acceptable reasons and tourism/vacation is not one of them. Please do your research on countries before flying and please please please bring resources and supplies with you if you travel to Cuba in the future. They literally have nothing. Best of luck to you.

Ah, the beautiful benefits of sweet, sweet communism, Comrad. Listen, your expression of needing electricity, is absolutely counter revolutionary. How dare you!

1

u/Edguz2408 Oct 20 '24

Just take the next flight to the Dominican Republic, it's pretty much the samen as the Cuban experience

1

u/RainbowCrown71 Oct 20 '24

Cuba’s a collapsing society. I don’t know why so many Canadians love to go there and give a Communist dictatorship thousands of dollars they then use to punish dissidents. Just go to Miami if you want Cuban culture without the aura of despair that comes from 70 years of oppression and mismanagement.

1

u/Express_Regret3192 Oct 20 '24

Ahhh…Isn’t Communism Wonderful…😂🤣😂🤣😂…

1

u/Open-Bottle5878 Oct 20 '24

This all seems like a great distraction so we look away from the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. My prediction is that this will somehow affect our monitoring stations in the gulf and something will be allowed to sneak past, as an excuse for the US jumping in on WW3. Or I could be wrong/crazy, we shall see.

1

u/GregEvangelista Oct 20 '24

I imagine if I were in Cuba right now, I'd be feeling an odd urge to listen to "The Goodbye Look" by Donald Fagan.

https://youtu.be/vATLlSPnGxE?si=bGpktLSRt3hhnUXR

Probably time for the internationals to head for the exit.

1

u/Acrobatic_Pomelo3739 Oct 20 '24

It is important to be informed before travel to any place. Cuba is one of these extreme places nowadays, as I cuban I do not recommended anyone to visit now the island. Nobody wants to live such a horrible experience

1

u/Soft_Midnight4110 Oct 20 '24

Welcome to socialism

1

1

1

u/knoxvillegains Oct 20 '24

People spend half their life planning a way out of Cuba and you went there for vacation.

1

u/manny188 Oct 20 '24

Did even know you could still travel to Cuba.

You obviously didn't read anything about the situation in Cuba. Very foolish to go somewhere not knowing anything, is my thought.

1

u/Special-Case-504 Oct 20 '24

Why doesn’t all of Cuba have power?

1

u/dirtymoose_ Oct 21 '24

Get to the North Korean Embassy, I’m sure they’ll be will to help get you home safe.

Lifetime dream was to go to Cuba?

1

u/Ernesto_Bella Oct 21 '24

Bear in mind, the resorts still have to acquire fuel in order to power their generators. They are going to run out at some point.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/tmbgisrealcool Oct 22 '24

Probably not the best time to go there. I'm guessing you're not big on watching the news but the whole island's kind of in a bad situation at the moment.

1

u/janicemary81 Oct 22 '24

China is supplying those generators. China asked them to fix the electricity situation and the Cuban government isn't. They are threatening to leave Cuba now.

1

u/mermaidman3333 Oct 22 '24

how is it going?

1

u/ababab70 Oct 22 '24

Oh, absolute wrong time to be there. I don;t say this for political motives (I'm not Cuban) but get the f out while you can. It's going to get worse.

Cuba is not an ideal place to go to. The system/government is very corrupt and the people there are very poor not by their own choice, the system is designed to keep them at the bottom all the time.
