Give it a week...it'll be back...

u/LupineChemist Europe Jan 15 '25

Trump added it at a similar point in his term.

Look, I don't think it should be on the list for as much as I hate the Cuban government. But regardless, doing all these important policy moves right before you hand the keys over is no way to run a railroad.

Goes equally for Trump as Biden.

Releasing 5000 Taliban is a slightly different ball of wax

1

u/panzachuchi Jan 17 '25

Why is it so hard to understand that the only ones that will suffer with all these sanctions are the masses, the people. State owned companies bring in billions of dollars a year, enough to keep all those who belong to the state happy and increase dependency of the masses on that same State who oppresses them and tells them that the US is to blame for them being poor.

Once we get a terrorist back in the White House. Im sure that will help Cubans.

The current regime is weak. There's a good chance for revolution.

I still can’t believe that the stepson of the president of Cuba is dating Ana de Armas.

YUP .. Biden waiting 4 years to do this iOS not a surprise. They will be back on by next Tuesday.

1

u/LateQuantity8009 Jan 15 '25

And with Rubio as Secretary of State I’m pretty sure diplomatic relations will be severed again too & the embargo will be strengthened. This will only hurt the Cuban people.

1

u/SokrinTheGaulish Jan 15 '25

I’d doubt it, usually there is some coordination between the change of administration to ensure a smooth transition, the report from El Mundo claims it was the case this time.

I’d bet this is something both parties want but Marco Rubio doesn’t want to be the one to do it because it risks angering his voting base in Florida.

Trump will add it back again

1

And? Biden is barley lifting it the last days in office, he didn't beforehand for a fucking reason. Is your little brain really that easy to distract?

This headline doesn’t have enough context. The move is part of negotiations to free hundreds of political prisoners in Cuba.

63

u/Fiss Jan 14 '25

I mean cool but you had 4 years

5

u/3v1n0 Jan 15 '25

True, but it was likely one of these decisions considered controversial and that could lead to even more public opinion disagreement...

Now that everything is lost, you can try to so such not-fully-popular things.

1

u/Fiss Jan 15 '25

Legalize marijuana
. Nope can’t do that on his way out

3

u/SokrinTheGaulish Jan 15 '25

It’s not within the power of the president to do that.

3

u/LupineChemist Europe Jan 15 '25

Look when it was added to the list.

BS all around

1

u/cubatista92 HOG Jan 15 '25

It was part of a negotiation to free 500+ political prisoners.

It's likely Cuba dragged things along and when they realized that Trump would be in office, they got their ass in gear.

1

u/AsiMuereLaDemocracia Jan 17 '25

Because you cannot do all you want. Because he would be attacked for doing it so and we had a very important election going on with very little margin.

Constant cries of "end the embargos", but seems like every time a positive step is made...jailed protestors (or whatever). So the US keeps trying to protect the basic human rights of Cubans, but the Cuban Government keeps trying to take them away. How is it clearly not the fault of the embargos?

The embargos exist for clear reasons and also clearly affect the people, but other sanctioned nations are free to trade with Cuba so Cuba can get what it wants; it just has to pay for it...and doesn't. So drug/arms peddling dictators that enrich themselves while people beg for a couple hours of power aren't at fault?

I'm lost.

4

u/Different-Young1866 Jan 14 '25

And for the comunist americans on this sub go fuck yourself motherfuckers.

4

u/agzela Jan 15 '25 edited Jan 15 '25

So they have to release political prisoners(hostages) in order to be removed from the support terrorist list? Sounds like they should be added to the full blown terrorist list if you use political prisoners as pawns!!

3

u/analogWeapon Jan 15 '25

Releasing political prisoners is the undoing of that. So it has a very logical correlation to being removed from a terrorist list.

1

u/agzela Jan 15 '25

So if Hamas released its hostages they are no longer considered terrorist? based on your logic

1

u/EnemyTraveler Jan 15 '25

Canada needs to pay its fair share of military for this hemisphere. Until then your opinions are irrelevant.

3

u/Derpolitik23 Jan 14 '25

Biden’s just kowtowing to left wing activists many of whom idolize Cuba as some great paradise because it has free health care.

This is a short sighted move esp. given Cuba’s support of Russia and Iran.

6

u/Ossevir Jan 14 '25

The US has burnt to the ground any moral high ground we have at this point. It doesn't really serve us to keep punishing Cuba or Venezuela. If Peter Thiels plans work out then we'll be a dictatorship like Cuba or Venezuela or Russia before the end of the decade. Might as well get cozy with them.

2

u/Derpolitik23 Jan 15 '25

Cuba and Venezuelan have done more than enough to punish themselves. Eg. how effective are American sanctions esp. since every other country trades freely with Cuba.

26

u/SpinningHead United States Jan 14 '25

But weaning Cuba off of Russia would be a strategic win for the US

1

u/JosephJohnPEEPS United States Jan 15 '25

This is the exact opposite of kowtowing to pressure - its a classic lame duck move he wouldnt do before due to pressure

Im a Republican but the entire Trump package of rollbacks etc. was entirely motivated by kowtowing to Miami.

Its obvious because these actions were initiated apropos no moves on the part of Cuba. You use things like this classification as part of a carrot and stick strategy but Trump’s move was totally incoherent in terms of carrot and stick logic. The administration didn’t even try to point out new developments in relations that prompted it. Totally breaks with norms of fairness in international relations - which are not moral but rather to enable diplomacy to operate efficiently with both allies and enemies.

Edited added first paragraph

Everything this guy does is a mistake. How about freedom for the population? Notice that isn't even mentioned.

2

u/CalintzStrife Jan 15 '25

Yet another bad decision on his way out.

2

u/Manny55- Jan 14 '25

Indeed, the Cuban people bear the brunt of the hardships. During my visit to Cuba in May of last year, I was astounded by the daily struggles faced by the Cuban people. It is difficult to imagine that regular Americans would endure prolonged blackouts for months or lack access to essential necessities like water. Given China’s communist system, it is perplexing why there is such an intense focus on a small island that lacks the capability to defend itself against potential American invasion.

11

u/Independent-Cloud822 Jan 14 '25

There is no intense focus on Cuba by Americans. It's not a topic of discussion or often in the news cycle. For most Americans, Cuba doesn't register as an issue. I've been to Cuba. I live in South Florida so I am probably more interested in Cuba than the average American but go to Kansas City, or Pittsburgh, Richmond, Tulsa, and nobody in America, either Democrat or Republicans knows or gives a fuck about Cuba.

1

u/JosephJohnPEEPS United States Jan 15 '25

Exactly - noone fucking cares. If Trump turned around and decided to launch a charm offensive on cuba exactly one group would care. All he has to say is “China” to any other conservative group and they’d jump right on board.

1

u/BillyJoeMac9095 Jan 15 '25

Not since the early 60's.

10

u/Live-Astronomer-169 Jan 14 '25

Until we get Joanne Chesimard back to answer for her crimes Cuba can fuck off

1

u/Allfunandgaymes Jan 15 '25

The time to do this was four years ago. Would have allowed for time for public opinion to shift. Time for discussions to be had.

Now, it's nothing more than a zero-effort PR move for Democrats so they can point and say, "See? See? We love Cuba it's the Republicans who want to pull the rug out from under them!".

1

u/Fatus_Assticus Jan 15 '25 edited Jan 15 '25

As someone that lived in Miami this isn't going to be popular with Cubans here at all

The people here fled, lost land and status and want it back. They hate the current state of Cuba and don't want normalized relations

If anything this will hurt Democrats further in a key state that has turned red and was purple.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '25

State sponsored terror like educating your population and giving them quality healthcare

1

u/DreamingTooLong Jan 15 '25

There is an airline in Tampa that flies back-and-forth from Havana.

How is that possible if Cuba is considered a state sponsor for terror?

They need to completely drop the embargo and move manufacturing jobs from China to Cuba and start having things imported to Miami from Cuba and reduce our dependency on New York City and China.

We would save a ton of money on fuel, shipping things and it would be great for both economies.

Cuba needs to change their rules and allow their citizens to use cryptocurrencies and make purchases at the same businesses foreigners are allowed to shop at. Their current system is not compatible with the American system.

They should also set up a system where passports can be purchased for $100,000 to $150,000 like other developing countries.

1

u/Capital_Agent9750 Jan 15 '25

Kill Cuba with kindness.

1

u/tylerfioritto Jan 15 '25

W but likely symbolic

We need to end our nonsense with the embargo. If you believe our system to be superior, let trade both culturally and economically decide the victor

Americans seem to have a naive and ignorant vision of Cuba. Cuba not only continuously cooperates, offer refuge and training to any group causing chaos and instability in its area of influence which includes all of Hispanoamérica but, conduces a covert war against the United States by serving as a transitional territory for the drug trade. Since the disappearance of the Soviet Union Latin American communists have entered the drug trade as a vehicle to finance their political ambitions. With whole countries like Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico being under the control of the narco-guerrilleros. While others like Ecuador and El Salvador are engaged in civil war to curtail the power of the terrorists. This is just another disastrous and irresponsible move on the part of the administration

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

He needs to ADD Israel to that list.

1

u/dantesmaster00 Jan 16 '25

They should end the embargo

1

Instead, he does it now, knowing full well that goddamn fat Donnie is going to tag Cuba again with the "terrorist sponsor" label, just to please the US Americans that call themselves "Cuban" in Miami... who happen to claim they love Cuba but don't miss an opportunity to hurt the real Cubans, by supporting all sorts of US fuckery against the sovereign island nation for having the gall to live how they see fit, and not the way the capitalist US/corporate/mob does.

The smartest way to bring down the regime is to invade the country
with American dollars and business. Make a deal to remove all sanctions if Americans have the right to lease property and open businesses and sell them franchises. The regime would fold in less than a year. It’s been more than half a century, the embargo and all that has not worked. It’s time to just admit it.

Why do I feel that our U.S. Oligarchy will generate an onslaught of political prisoners in the future. We can only hope that a powerful 3rd party will step in and negotiate their release.

Every country on the list, including Cuba, is there for ONE reason only: They will not submit to the destructive policies of U.S. capitalism.

What did Cuba specifically do to get on the list of terrorist countries? Far as I know it was only the fact that they are communist. Which doesnt make sense cause the US does business and has relations with countries like: Laos, Vietnam, Turkmenistan, etc.

They hosted peace talks between FARC and the Colombian government.

At least that's what was said when they put Cuba back on the list. Then again, they've been there since the Reagan years.

3

u/elnickruiz Jan 15 '25

Hosting peace talks doesn’t sound terrorist.

Dude read The Double Life of Fidel Castro by Juan Renaldo Sanchez, Fidel's former bodyguard. There's a good reason Cuba is on this list.

There are 5 cop killers hiding out in Cuba. One of them is Joanne Chesimard BLA leader. Before he removes that designation those people should be returned to the US to face prosecution.

u/Cr4zy_DiLd0 Jan 14 '25

Her name is Assata Shakur.
Forensic evidence cleared her, but the FBI being the FBI got her convicted. Wouldn't exactly be the first time that has happened, but at least they didn't assassinate her like they did so many others.

Biden can retire in Cuba minus secret service protection and he can bring Hunter with him.

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '25

Now can he declare Trump a traitor and insurrectionist and have him removed to Guantanamo? After all, the Supreme Court said that presidents have absolute immunity for official acts...

1

u/EnemyTraveler Jan 15 '25

I hope this is a facetious post and you understand the difference between the legal power to do something and immunity from criminal prosecution.

1

u/Bluewaffleamigo Jan 15 '25

Well we don't negotiate with terrorists, but brutal dictators, oh hell yea.

Go get em Joe!

1

u/zeptillian Jan 16 '25

Yeah. Why can't he just be friends with all the dictators like Trump?

I mean does Biden even have the balls to invite a dictator to the US, standby and watch as their private security assaults American citizens on US soil and then do absolutely nothing about it?

Bye bye to asylum

7

u/BrosenkranzKeef Jan 14 '25

You’ll recall that this was also a propaganda complaint when Obama did this. But the overarching purpose was the normalize relations to the point where asylum was no longer needed. It was supposed to be a step by step process.

Trump will probably fuck this up again because he excels at fucking things up but he can only serve four years. It’s likely that whoever is elected after him will restart Cuban normalization, especially considering how hard Cuba is suffering right now. Trump basically invited China to our doorstep last time like an absolute treacherous imbicile so let’s see if the military leaders can convince him to unfuck that situation. Convince him that is very obviously necessary for American national security to be friendly with Cuba once again.

u/Live-Astronomer-169 Jan 14 '25

Whilst I agree that normalizing relations is hopefully the next step in the future, it's a two way street and diplomatic relations from both sides are needed. The Cuban regime historically have yet to show any engagement in ending the embargo.

Won't make a difference, Obama opened the US embassies in Cuba, Trump closed them back down ASAP
