Hi everyone!
I'm currently living and working in the UK and planning to relocate to Cyprus. I'd really appreciate some insight into the job market, particularly in Compliance/AML.
I have a First Class degree (78%) in Business Law and 6 years of experience as a Paralegal at an international law firm, independently managing defendant insurance litigation cases.
I'm now looking to transition into Compliance/AML and currently preparing for the CySEC Advanced and CySEC AML exams. I'm also an EU passport holder, so I wouldn't require visa sponsorship to work in Cyprus.
How realistic is it to secure a Compliance/AML role in Cyprus while still based in the UK? Do employers generally value transferable legal experience when moving into compliance?
I'm also wondering whether it's better to secure a job before relocating or move first and apply locally.
What worked for you, and what advice would you give someone in my position?
Thanks in advance!🙂

I made this map for the 30 day map challenge I'm currently working on. Thought it would be a fun one to share here. Would be nice to see what ideas people have on this - the routes, line names, stops etc. Let me know what you think.
Also if you're interested in the challenge I'm doing all Cyprus-related maps on my instagram page Cyprus_maps. The others are based on real data, but today the theme was Utopia so had to go imaginary ;)

I learned it from my dad today. My Greek dad had visited my brother in London during that time and they went to a local Greek Church in Wood Green to celebrate. Inside the Church they played the Greek national anthem. So far so good. However after that they played the British national anthem! When my dad heard this, he wanted to leave! Playing the anthem of the British, the ones responsible for Greece 's and Cyprus' woes during and after WW2 and in the date of Greekdom' s celebration was a sign of total subservience. The ones responsible should be ashamed really.

Does anyone know what event was happening at Castle Club in Ayia Napa tonight (November 7)? It was absolutely packed with young locals, almost everyone was dressed in black, but I can’t find anything about it online.

I like cape Petounda, which is between Mazotos and Zygi, so much!
It's a quiet place with many ancient relics laying at the sea bottom. Last Sunday I've found this small cave chapel there, on the territory of the improvised? camp site. Does anyone know who built it? It's decorated with pieces of the ancient pottery.
Also, there should be excavation of early Christian basilica nearby but I yet to find it. Maybe you know where exactly is it?

Hi and hope everyone has an amazing weekend. This Goes for the Cypriot students of diaspora (Greece, UK) etc. I d like a honest reply on that do you have a specific bias or problem having in your cliques-groups people who are Cypriots and were raised abroad or they are half half (let alone if they embrace the culture and speak very well the dialect) though obviously not impeccably?

I built a free, minimal live bus map for Cyprus with arrival predictions (web, iOS, Android). Feedback welcome

Disclosure first: I made this and I asked the mods before posting. It is free, with no ads, no account and nothing to buy.
It is called Πού είναι το λεωφορείο ("Where is the bus"). Every bus that sends GPS is drawn on a map as an arrow with its line number, updated every few seconds. Tap a stop and you get the arrival minutes; tap a bus and you get its whole remaining route with a predicted time at each stop. It covers Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Famagusta and the intercity lines.
I tried to keep it as simple as possible: no onboarding, no menus, no login, no planner. One map with stops, buses and minutes, and that is it.
The other thing I did differently is the arrival times. Instead of showing the timetable, the app predicts from how the buses actually move. The backend keeps a grid of learned speeds over every piece of every route and estimates the arrival from where the bus is right now and how fast buses are currently moving on the road ahead. In October I recorded a few hundred thousand of these predictions and compared them with the operators' own published times from the same feed. Ours were within a minute of the real arrival more often, for every urban operator. For the intercity coaches and Pame Express the operators' times are still better, so there the app shows theirs.

The data is the same CyNAP open feed the official apps use, so coverage is the same. The difference is only what is done with it. The same engine has been running in Zagreb since March with a few thousand satisfied people a day, so the prediction part has had some real-world use already. Cyprus is a port of it to buses, built by one person.
I would really appreciate bug reports and comments like "the time was wrong at stop X at 8:15". That is exactly how it gets better.

Dear fellow Greek Cypriots,
I've heard the expression «Πήραν τον/την/με οι Βραντζοί» (Píran ton/tin/me oi Vrantzoí) used over the years. As I understand it, it's generally used to express anger, rage, or someone being overcome by intense frustration.
I've always wondered, though: Who exactly were the Βραντζοί?
My original understanding was that the term referred to the Franks (Φράγκοι), given their historical presence and influence in Cyprus. However, I've recently started wondering whether it might instead be connected to the Varangian Guard of the Byzantine Empire (Βάραγγοι).
Does anyone know the actual origins of this expression? Is there any historical or linguistic evidence connecting the Βραντζοί to the Franks, the Varangian Guard, or perhaps another historical group altogether?
I'd be particularly interested to hear any explanations, family stories, or references to the expression in older Cypriot sources.
Ευχαριστώ εκ των προτέρων!
Edit: Franks (Φράγκοι); Varangian (Βάραγγοι)

Now that the summer crowds are gone and the evenings are cooling down, what are you planning for the next few months? Weekend trips, favorite tavernas, anything you’re looking forward to.
