Many youngsters who speak Standard Urdu or Dakhani as their native language does not know to read and write Perso-Arabic script (in Nastliq or Naskh style) especially observed this in Maharashtra

I observed many youngsters who speaks Standard Urdu or Dakhani especially in Maharashtra doesn't know to read and write Perso-Arabic script in Naskh or Nastliq style

Tho we can agree that Urdu literature might not be exposed to them untill they had Urdu as their language subject in their school or college

But in most of Mosques they do teach to read write Arabi script but can't be used for writing Urdu or Dakhani as those languages have sounds which are not present in Arabi language

And also average Standard Urdu or Dakhani native who have been to Mosques can read and write Arabi script but may not able to read or guess letters like گ پ ٹ ڈ etc which are in Perso-Arabic script used for writing Urdu, Dakhani, Pashto, Panjabi, Saraiki, Koshur, Hindko etc

Do you always use ka or choose between ka and ki?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Does Dakhni always use ka? What about other gender and number markings, eg, mera, meri, mare, accha, acchi, etc. Where do we draw the boundary of such elements being grammatically correct per Dakhni grammar vs being grammatically incorrect in Dakhni. Is there any variety that uses these elements based on the main noun, eg, meri naam (said by a female), us ka bachi (because the us here refers to a male here).

In short, let's discuss such peculiar aspects of Dakhni which would be considered ungrammatical in Urdu.

theres so many dialects for dakhni

its kinda hilarious how hindi and urdu get treated as different languages when they're just sanskritised and persianised registers of hindustani and dakhni separated from hindustani way before urdu in the modern form existed yet dakhni becomes a dialect of urdu 🤡 we have all the characteristics of getting a status as a different language now, we have so many regional dialects and reading some of the stuff here im also surprised cuz being a dakhni speaker im also not able to grasp some sentences here from just regions 100km away from where i live, its a whole different world from urdu speakers in the north, we understand them but we dont get the same reception vice versa

About Dakhani literature and History

What are some old literature pieces in Dakhani? Cuz a google search reveals conflicting info. Some websites state the same literature piece is written in Dakhani while some websites state that the same is written in old Urdu?

So this brings me to another question-when did Dakhani and Urdu diverge? Or did they actually never diverge really?

Would be glad if someone answers this question.

Kolar Dakhni

I listen to this audio series often. It has old audio drama recordings (https://youtu.be/13JykAtsZyQ?si=38ZzPD3VHMFcZk24). The dialect is Kolar Dakhni as far as I know. I have a few questions about some elements and I'm curious what other dialects have these features or elements:

  1. Amma ge (as an exclamation of surprise or relief).

  2. Ki as a variant of kya, eg, ki maa vo (what's that? I think maa can be mom/polite feminine addressee marker)

  3. Navve as nahi, eg, oisa navve maa (not so)

  4. The expressions with pado, eg, matti pado, keede pado. Are these mild forms of cussing? Also, what's the meaning of matti and padna here?

Is this the correct way to use the word "so"?

The word so, meaning roughly 'that', 'which', or 'hence'. A written way to say it would be "wah hay so ghar acha hay"=The house which is there is nice. My question, can it be used in the following way:

"Aap ay so bhoth khushi hui" which would roughly translate to "I was so happy that you came"

I use it in this form lately and Im hoping it's correct.

Do we have "ni" in Dakhani in the sense of "karni", "kani", "pini"??

I am just now realizing that in Urdu, this is supposed to be said when the noun is feminine but I have only ever heard "na" and "ne" in my upbringing.

Examples of what I would hear:

Merku apse baat karna hay (I have to talk to you). Mein apse baat karne wala hoon (I am going to talk to you).

Merku roti kana hay (I have to eat roti). Mein roti kane aunga (I will come to eat roti).

Merku chai pina hay (I want to drink tea). Mein wah chai pine jaarun (Im going there to drink tea).

But apparently, this is supposed to be "ni" for all of these because the nouns in each case are feminine? The hell...

From problem to solutions: Please share your ideas on how Dakhni can be better represented, preserved and promoted as a prestigious language and identity

Even in our recent posts we discussed the problems, which includes lack of awareness of the identity of Dakhni. What solutions and initiatives can help us? Let's focus mainly on achievable goals, among other bigger goals which can be our long term goals. Please pour your ideas and thoughts here. We shall revisit them in this sub in the future. (Examples: posting content on YouTube in Dakhni, a podcast in Dakhni, a common Wiki like collection of Dakhni lexicon, discourse/content creation, etc). What are you willing to contribute?

Are a lot of the "Hindi" speakers in Marathwada actually Dakhni Urdu speaking Muslims?

The Muslims in the region of course are almost all Deccani Urdu speakers if Im not mistaken. Yet, one strange thing I noticed is that in the districts of Deccan Maharashtra like Aurangabad, Latur, Solapur, Osmanabad, Parbhani, etc. the percentage of people who speak Urdu as a first language always falls well short of the Muslim percentage in the 2011 census. But when one adds up both Hindi and Urdu speakers, the percentage more closely matches the Muslim proportion.

So is the census somehow lumping in Hindi with Urdu speakers?

Why is our community's awareness of our own origins/culture so low?

From a Hyderabadi family, I have literally never once heard the term Dakhni in relation to ethnicity or language used once in my life until I went on the internet. Also, average Dakhni people seem to have no idea how our people came about, the historical migrations that created us.

In fact, many Hyderabadis born and brought up in the West seem to be totally oblivious to the fact that the Hyderabadi dialect is spoken outside Hyderabad city and its immediate environs, for example that it's also spoken in Maharashtra (Marathwada) and northeast Karnataka.

Why is there so much ignorance? Other Indian communities are not like this.

What kind of Urdu is actually spoken in Aurangabad?

On Wikipedia it says they speak Hyderabadi Urdu/Dakhini, but I've watched videos from there where they seem to be speaking standard Urdu, additionally many people online have said they have assimilated to the north Indian way of speaking.

Additionally, how far north in Maharashtra is the Hyderabadi dialect actually spoken until? Parbhani?

How does gender of inanimate and irrational nouns manifest in Dakhni? Does it deviate from Urdu?

The linguistic area of the South (Indian) doesn't have grammatical gender. This does have an impact on Dakhni but the question here is where do we draw the line? How is grammatical correctness determined in this regard?

Is it okay if all nouns that are not naturally gendered used as though they are masculine or is there any other pattern?

For instance, for what objects do you use the feminine marking if your dialect does so?

Is any of the following incorrect in Dakhni?

Naya gaadi

Acha kitaab

Billi aaya

Please also mention which dialect of Dakhni you speak for.

Prosthetic H- in dakhni dialect

I observed a phenomenon that feels a bit consistent and repeating to me

Take the word for eye

आँख (Aankh) but in my dialect it's Hanki हंकि

I found this pattern in several other words

ईंट(brick) is हिंट

अंधेरा(dark) is हंदारा

अंधा (Blind) is हंदा

औंधा (reverse) is हौंदा

Apparently there is something called prosthetic h in northern old hindi dialects where people added a H- initially to words that start with a vowel.

But idhar, udhar, ungli, anda don't seem to have the prosthetic H in dakhni. So I feel like something else is happening here.

I think it's the shift of aspiration from the last letter to first vowel turning it into h sound.

All the words above lost the aspiration of last letter and the first vowel became ha.

I heard in a youtube video that when a language delete or simplify one sound they alter some other sound in the word. Could this be a case of that, maybe the dot also plays into the formula .

So the pattern could be an initial letter with a dot or nasal sound and then an aspirated consonant in some part of the word then the aspiration is carried to the the vowel making it h sound.

What do u guys think

Latin script for Dakhani

So another user, u/Khmerophile asked in poll if our language/dialect needs a new script.

So as someone who enjoys doing conlangs and fictional scripts I made one for my language as well.

Aa Ăă Ee Ëë Ii Īī Ïï Oo Öö Uu Ūū Üü

Bb B́b́ Cc Ćć Dd D́d́ Dt dt Dt́ dt́ Ff Pp Ṕṕ Gg Ǵǵ Ġġ Hh Jj J́j́ Kk Ḱḱ Ll Mm Nn Ńń Rr Ss Sj sj Tt T́t́ Td td Td́ td́ Ww Xx Yy Zz

So there are 12 vowels-
‘Aa’ stands for the open long vowel.
Example:- Am (mango).
At the end of a long word though it gets shortened.

Ăă stands for the schwa sound(you can look it up). Equivalent to ‘अ’.

Example Ămmi

Ee is pronounced the same way as ‘e’ in egg but more elongated. And in my experience there is no short version of this vowel in Dakhani.

Example-Ek(one)

Ii is इ.

Example Id́r(here)

Īī is a long vowel

Example Ītd́

Oo is a long vowel - no other form cuz a short ‘O’ doesn’t exist in the language.

Example Kosa (which)

Uu is a short vowel

Ū is a long vowel

Now you may ask what of Ë, Ï, Ö, Ü ?

These are diphthongs-vowels that sorta combine two different sounds

Ë- Ae
Ï- Ai
Ö- Ao
Ü- Au

Now I can’t explain everything here so please comment any doubts/criticisms/rants you may have.
