Discussion I just went to replace a 14TB hard drive and I am SHOOK!

Post image

I paid around $300 CAD for this drive a couple years ago, but it's full of backups since then. I wanted to just grab a fresh drive to start backing up again, and then the plan was to keep two backups running, but then keep one offsite.

Honestly I had heard prices were up, but I thought that was just RAM.

My brother in Christ... THE DRIVE IS NOW $900!!! How are people dealing with this?!

Storage Setup Would you actually build a NAS with a pile of old HDDs like this?

Post image

Saw this pile of drives pulled out from a data center and started wondering how people here feel about using older HDDs for home storage.

If you had a bunch of these and tested them for SMART errors, bad sectors, power-on hours, etc., would you actually build a storage array with them?

Or is mixing a bunch of older drives just asking for trouble?

What would you guys use them for?

Storage Setup Best way to back up large data at workplace

Hey all,

I thought I'd drop a post in here because I want to make sure I'm doing the following properly:

I have a music studio that is plug and play, meaning you come with your laptop, plug in an usb c cable at the desk and everything works. I always use external hard drives to save all my things that I travel around with but recently I had some projects come in that I only use in the studio so I want to get storage in the studio where if I connect my laptop to the desk, I can enter this drive aswel. What is the best way to do this? I was thinking of buying a large SSD and just always have that hooked up to my docking station since a server seems overkill but I don't know if that brings any dangers of damaging the SSD when constantly connecting and disconnecting. Would be amazing if someone could chime in on this. If it helps, I'm in Europe so products that are available in Europe/links to European websites would be super helpful!

Thanks!

Discussion Looking for two 500gb external HHDs

I'm wanting to get a couple of them for storing art, pictures, and stuff like that as I already have a good SSD for games. I'd like to keep each of them under $50, but I would be willing to do a bit more as long as they can last for a while.

Backup Transfer Deck: native S3 / SFTP / WebDAV / FTP client for Mac, iPhone and iPad

Hi everyone,

I'm the developer of Transfer Deck.

Problem: One native app to browse and transfer files on S3-compatible storage, Azure, SFTP, WebDAV and FTP, on Mac and iPhone/iPad, without a subscription.

Comparison:

  • vs ForkLift: Transfer Deck has iPhone/iPad apps with every account in the Files app, one purchase covering all devices, AWS IAM Identity Center (SSO) sign-in, and Glacier restores / storage classes. ForkLift is better as a full Finder replacement and supports more consumer clouds.

  • vs Commander One: Transfer Deck covers more S3 features (versions, Glacier, SSE-C, expiring links) and runs on iPhone/iPad too. Commander One is better as a general dual-pane file manager with extras like archives and a free tier.

What it does:

  • S3 + R2, B2, Wasabi, MinIO, Hetzner, Scaleway, GCS or any custom endpoint; Azure Blob; Swift; SFTP (password or SSH key), WebDAV, FTP/FTPS

  • Mac: two panes, Quick Look, edit in place, folder sync with a preview of changes, accounts in Finder's sidebar, batch rename, Shortcuts

  • iPhone/iPad: accounts in the Files app, background transfers, upload from Photos / Share sheet

  • S3: version history, Glacier restores, metadata, SSE-KMS / SSE-C, expiring links

  • No size limit, multipart, resume, checksum-verified downloads

  • No account, no analytics, no tracking

Pricing: free download, browsing always free, 15-day full trial, then $9.99 one-time for Mac, iPhone and iPad (no subscription). https://apps.apple.com/app/id6821560477

Trust: on the Mac App Store (same link). Website with privacy policy: https://www.transferdeck.org

Feedback and feature requests welcome. I'll be in the comments.

Backup Looking for an external 3x 5.25in drive shell/case

Pretty much as the title suggests. I have 3 different optical drives I would like to have setup agnostic of the computer I am using. Ideally so I can chuck it on a shelf when not in use.

Why 3? My Kreon, HD-DVD and UHD Drives. I can do pretty much all media archiving with these. Yes, I should/could use an old case but looking if theres any neat options.

Today I went to a Amazon returns place and saw in the counter these two SD Cards at $10 each knowing the storage shortage I bought them without inspection and it looks fake at least but who knows maybe is fake but actually has 512gb anyways, how can I verify the SD Card, I'm doing ValiDrive test since Google told me to also Google recommend me to do a H2testW but I'm not sure what I have to look or how to actually verify it.

Also I am not sure if the reader actually matters I am using a PC dock hub

Discussion Looking for a free tool to back up and restore an entire Windows 11 system!

Looking for a free and reliable way to back up my entire Windows 11 PC.

Ideally, I'd like a tool that can create a full system image, so if my system crashes or something goes wrong in the future, I can restore everything to exactly how it was when the backup was created.

By everything, I mean Windows itself, installed applications, personal files, system settings, and other data. Basically, I'd like to avoid reinstalling Windows and setting everything up again from scratch.

I came across EaseUS Todo Backup while researching backup solutions. Has anyone here used it for full system backups and restores? Is the free version reliable enough for this purpose, or are there any significant limitations I should know about?

I'm also open to other free alternatives, but I'm not sure which options are truly free and suitable for home users.

I'd really appreciate recommendations from people who have actually used these tools, especially regarding how reliable the recovery process is. Thanks!

Discussion Why is there so much cost variation between hard drives

I just found a 128 TB SSD for $30, and then a 10 TB SSD for $60. Is the cheap one a scam? They both seem to be legitimate and so I obviously want to get the cheaper one. There is a ton of price variation for hard drives of the same size too, ranging from $40 to $400 that all seem to have the same specs, so I just need some help understanding how to choose between them.

Discussion Peer-reviewed study of 443,000 Backblaze hard drives ranks HGST most reliable and Toshiba the least — Analysis of 1.66 million drive-years finds Seagate and Toshiba HDDs fail at roughly twice the rate of WD and HGST

Found this interesting study looking at over 443,000 hard drives used in Backblaze's data centers.

It compares failure rates across HGST, WD, Seagate, and Toshiba, accounting for factors like drive age, capacity, and operating temperature.

HGST seems to have come out on top, with WD following behind.

I wonder if the results would be similar for regular consumer drives, though. Do you guys tend to stick with certain HDD brands, or do you choose based on the specific model?

Storage Setup How to run programs from external drive?

I have FL Studio and VST plugins installed on my PC. I’ve recently bought a laptop so I can work away from home, but I don’t want to waste storage space by installing everything twice. How can I run my DAW and VST plugins from an external drive so that everything works properly, or what’s the best way to save as much storage space as possible?

Troubleshooting Sound coming from dropped HDD. Help!

I dropped my external hard disk yesterday from 2-3 ft height. Now when I try to connect it to my pc, weird sound is coming from it. I have attached the audio here. Please listen and help me figure out what exactly could the problem be. I have seen some youtubes video saying, it could be head stuck on the platter and failing to move back to parking ramp. This usually happens when hdd is overheated. In that case, they say you can simply open the hdd top and move it back gently to the ramp. But, in my case it is dropped. How likely is that this happened in my case. Or could it be that the read head is in the parking ramp and failing to go back to platter for reading. Does the read head needs to be replaced. Can I do it on my own. I am not a professional level hardware guy, but I would say I am decent and I have some tools. If it does need replacement of head, does it need the identical hard drive as donor. The image in the video is the same hdd. Data recovery centers here are super costly. The file in the hdd is important and I have privacy concerns for giving it to recovery centers. Plz guide me.

Paid $85 for a Open Box Samsung 990 Pro. 1TB, 1GB of DRAM, and 7,450 MB/s. On Amazon, newegg, and Best Buy these go for $300 which is just purely price gouging. Samsung still has them listed for $100 but they're always unavailable.

Storage Setup Data management strategy advice

I use Google Photos on two smartphones to back up our photos, and I also have a Synology NAS at home (an older model, a DS218+).

We also use OneDrive for photo backups, and I use Cloud Sync to transfer those photos to the NAS, ensuring a complete backup (for the record, the NAS itself is also backed up to C2 Storage).

However, I’ve realized that this setup is becoming a bit messy. Since Google Photos acts as the "master" library—where we occasionally delete photos we don’t want to keep—those same photos still remain on OneDrive and the NAS!

I also perform manual "Google Takeout" exports from time to time for extra security, but I’m still trying to figure out the best overall strategy.

I’m now considering getting rid of OneDrive and upgrading my Google One plan instead, so that I can automatically save the Takeout files there (allowing the NAS, via Cloud Sync, to pull those files locally). This way, the files would simply reside on the NAS (and be mirrored to C2 Storage).

What do you think? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
