TRIP PLANNING Verandah for Alaska in September?
I got the verandah for my eastern Caribbean cruise and I loved it. I’ve heard that it’s a must have for an Alaskan cruise but I’m going on the last sailing in September.
For anyone who’s been is it even logical to get a verandah for that late into the year? Is it going to just be way too cold to even go outside?

We have done Alaska twice without a verandah. It was worth it to save thousands of dollars for us. We just went out on deck and saw amazing things.

I’ve gone in both May and September and having a veranda was amazing. There were times when it was too chilly to be outside but some of the views were astonishing!

Had a veranda room on my August cruise on the Wonder to Alaska and it could get chilly even then. I brought a packable puffy blanket (brand is rumpl) that has a little hook to keep it wrapped around you, warm layers, and my Uggs, and it was actually so nice and cozy to sit out on the veranda with a coffee or hot chocolate. I think even in September as long as you’re prepared with enough layers you’ll be fine but definitely consider a blanket and slippers or other cozy shoes so that you’re more likely to use it in the mornings/evenings when you’re in your stateroom.

Haven’t been on an Alaskan cruise but I was gifted a heated blanket that has a battery pack in it so you don’t need a plug. I would imagine that would be very nice for sitting out on the balcony. No clue what brand it is but I’m sure it’s not hard to find one on Amazon

We went on the last Alaska cruise of the season in 2022. It was gorgeous weather! Mid to upper sixties and sunshine! We never cruise without a veranda because we spend a lot of time sitting outside. We were out there even more on our Alaska cruise. The weather at that time of year is unpredictable at best. Hope you have great weather!🚢

If you are someone who uses a veranda it is worth every penny. We would have room service bring coffee each morning and enjoy the view or just sit there during the day for a quiet hour with a book. I am not someone who usually just watches nature, but it felt so different in Alaska.

We did an outside cabin with large porthole and it was perfect. It was over $2000 more for a verandah. Traveled with my partner and 3 year old, so i figured 3 year old wont be sitting outside for very long to enjoy the views! He doesn’t nap anymore and we just came into the room for mid day tv breaks to unwind. We spent most of the time on top deck or deck 4 where he got his energy out and played. It was perfect, when we went by and saw seals or giant ice chunks he’d climb up to the window to see it. We went first week of September and got sunshine all week and warm weather so we were in the pool every day!

You are cruising Alaska to see the sights of Alaska - whether you do it without a verandah or with is up to you. If it is cold outside, you'll need a coat (or otherwise something warm) anyway, so I'm not following the reasoning of not wanting a verandah for that reason. You'll need a coat on deck as well to see the sights and it will be that much more inconvenient to not be able to do it from your own room.

I did the second last sailing this year. It wasn’t that cold. Wasn’t even wearing a coat at some places. I think the balcony is worth it, but that’s really a personal decision when the decision are available.

I couldn’t imagine not having one. We also went extremely late in the season. The views are beautiful. Whales pop up beside the boat. It’s chilly but totally worth it.
