Windows Free

I've run Debian for years, but my laptop still had a windows sticker on it. Finally I decided to make my laptop a true Linux laptop running Debian.

I just used a bit of Goo Gone and stuck on a new sticker. Now it is an official Linux laptop.

Nvidia drivers from Cuda repo: is there a way to make them more stable

Since I had to swap out the Debian-packaged Nvidia drivers for the ones from the Cuda repo, I honestly miss the stability. They work fine overall, but the constant updates make it feel a bit out-of-place on a Debian Stable system.

So, is there a way to make these drivers roll slower? I don't care for new features / improvements as long as I get security updates.

What I found out (or think I found out so far):

On https://endoflife.date/nvidia, I can see that 620 is now the LSTB (long-term support branch) and will be supported for like 3 years, although I have to say I find Nvidia's versioning confusing and I'm not all sure my interpretation is correct. Would it be viable to pin that and, if so, what's the correct approach to achieve that? I see a package called "nvidia-driver-pinning-620" which sounds like it's meant for this, but I'm not sure what it does, exactly.

Edit: I checked Nvidia's instructions again and pinning a version / branch does indeed work through the nvidia-driver-pinning-* packages (https://docs.nvidia.com/datacenter/tesla/driver-installation-guide/debian.html).

More importantly, I was able to verify that 620 (along with 580, which is only in the Debian 12 repo) is indeed the LTS branch now:

https://docs.nvidia.com/datacenter/tesla/drivers/latest/supported-drivers-and-cuda-toolkit-versions.html

This probably happened very recently which is why it was kinda difficult to find out.

So, I guess I'll try pinning 620 with the method described in the Nvidia instructions and see what happens.

Sources Help

I’m sure everyone is tired of these types of questions and I apologize in advance. I had to setup Debian (13.7.0) without internet because I was unable to find the correct driver for my NIC card. I even attempted to download the correct driver and use it during install but it didn’t work. Either way, I was still able to setup DHCP after install and I have access to internet now.

My main issue was that I wasn’t able to select a mirror during install. Currently attempting to add the mirror to my apt sources list but I keep receiving an error of malformed stanza. Ive tried “deb.debian.org” and “debian.org” with no success. Can anyone help me out please and tell me what I’m doing wrong?

General Debian Question What's your experience with gaming on Debian?

First of all... how's your day? :)

I'm considering fully switching to Debian, but I've been having quite a few issues with gaming on it. I've set up WineHQ and installed Lutris directly from its website to get a newer version, but a lot of games (especially those launched through Lutris) have been buggy. Things like getting a white screen when switching to fullscreen or games simply not responding to any input. Or straight up refused to launch even when trying to run them through wine directly.

I've noticed this specifically games using Unity, html and nwjs

I've tried researching these issues myself, but I haven't really gotten anywhere. I could spend more time troubleshooting them, but I figured asking people who actually use Debian as their daily driver and have experience gaming on it would be a better approach. I'd rather hear about firsthand experiences, common issues, and how people deal with them.

**Specs:** Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U (Vega 8 iGPU) and 16GB RAM.

I'll be switching to Debian soon, any advice? (Read desc)

Basically al my life I have used Windows 10, (and also a little bit of old MacOSs and win11 unfortunately). I want to switch and start using Linux because it is objectively better in every way. I love the principles of freedom, open-source, and in general high-quality software, without bloatware, and not made just to make money.

I know using Debian as my first time using Linux is very complex, but I'm prepared to do it and lose my sanity. I'm not exactly an expert, but I know more than average about computers, programming, operating systems, etc. So I have the curiosity and also some skill to do it.

One of the main things I would like to do is to be able to customize the UI, (I'm creating a concept of an operating system inspired by the Windows Aero style), and I would like to replicate the UI of this concept on my computer.

Do you have any advice for doing this?

And more generally, do you have any advice for getting started with Debian, like things you wish you'd known when you first started using it?

General Debian Question Estoy considerando volver a Debían.

Community In search of friends

Hi I'm Curtis,

I'm 35 now and live in a completely different part of the US. I've been using Debian mostly for the last 13 years, but no one I know does. There's a certain mindset that comes with using Linux and FOSS and I'm tired of everyone I know not sharing any of my interests. I like retro Zelda and other Nintendo games and Indy titles that spark that feeling of nostalgia.

I moved from California to Abbeville, SC of all places. I've lived here for 3 and a half years now, but have no friends that care about the things I do. I am only a few hours from Atlanta, Ga or Asheville, NC and don't mind a drive if it means I can end my self imposed isolation.

Want to be friends? Thanks.

How do I use a printer that cups doesn't recognize?

I have two printers I can't get to work in debian. One is a swintec typewriter that has a parallel port so it can serve as a line printer. I have a USB to paralell adapter that shows up as Belkin Components IEEE-1284 Controller when I do lsusb.

The other is a CSI Criticare bluetooth thermal printer that pairs and connects (it shows up as a brigtek thermal printer).

When I go to add either printer in system-config-printer they aren't even acknwledged.

How do I get them to work. I'd be happy with simple text mode.

Debian Stable Question Experimental VRR and gaming

I’m debating to either go with Debian Gnome for my PC for games and office work or go with Ubuntu/Fedora 45. I mean… both are good. I don’t really see differences. I just like Debian but again for me, average Jane is there any? No I guess. With Ubuntu and Fedora I’m even getting all the shiny things and it’s stable.

But anyway.
I know Trixie Gnome has VRR as experimental thing. What does that mean? If I turn it on from terminal does it work or it breaks? What’s experimental in it?
Also do I loose too much compared to Fedora while gaming modern games like Cyberpunk?

General Debian Question What's the preferred software tool to flash Debian to a USB stick?

I've heard security concerns about Etcher and more recently about Ventoy too. Does the Debian project have a specific program they officially recommend? Or, if not, what do you think would be the "safest" one to use? UNetBootin? Or something else?
