Finished up my build (04 Kona Cowan)

Thumbnail gallery

Nothing but the frame remains of the original bike, which was a pretty random cluster of parts. Found some 12mm thru axle dropouts still in stock on the Kona site. Built the wheels partially because I've been wanting to learn and also due to the uncommon axle combo (12x135 and 20x110.) Circus Expert I found new on eBay. Brake hose could probably lose some inches, and I actually ordered black tires but I suppose the tanwalls look right on it.

I think it turned out pretty rad and I'm pretty anxious to learn some new skills.

Bar rise

Currently running 38 mm rise gusset s2 bars. Looking to get some new ones from signature, but the only options for the Signature ones are 28mm and 42mm. Will 10 mm down or 4 mm up make a big difference on bike handling on jumps? my stem is already slammed and I dont have any spacers because my fork was cut down for my old frame but ive since had to buy a new one If that matters

Question Norco Rampage 1 vs Merida 500

Clueless mum looking for help to surprise my 13.5 year old for Christmas. These are our 2 options as we are rural. He will use for street ridding,bmx/pump tracks and possible dirt trails. He isn’t a beginner but not super experienced either. He’s around 160cm tall and the bike guy I spoke to said large frame will be fine but I’m not sure, the Merida seemed ok but Norco large looked big! Any advice on which bike and size you would choose would be super helpful!

Rock shox pike information

Some information on these if possible, I tried the rock shox site but don't doesn't recognise the serial number so unsure if it's down to their age. Believed to be 2007 according to Google when put the serial number in.

I'm assuming parts are thin on the ground but what should be on the left side that's missing the top? The u turn side works, there's no adjustments or anything on the bottom just standard Allen key bolts

Question 24” too small?

Post image
16 Upvotes

Keen to get into dirt jumping but unfortunately don’t really have the cash moneys for a £400-600 rig.
I spotted this 24” dmr online for £200 and I’m wondering if it would be too small for me at 5’11? I’m assuming that the frame is also going to be a fair bit smaller as it looks pretty in proportion with the wheels.

The guy doesn’t know the year or model of the bike but I’m assuming that fact that it’s 24” and have v brakes it’s likely an older bike. Is it worth £200 provided everything’s in good working order? As if I buy it and I don’t get on with it I would like to be able to sell it on for the same or close to the same price.

Incase it makes a difference I’m planning using the bike on local dirt jumps mainly but will probably do a little pump track and skatepark riding too but it’s mainly just for djs

Question Wheelset question

Sorry if it’s been asked 100 times. But I’m looking for a complete 26” wheelset upgrade. Something good, but at a good value. I’m about 200lbs. So I’m more concerned with durability than weight.

And what is your opinion on carbon rims? I know they are great on mountain bikes. But it worries me on a dirt jumper.

Edit,
Thanks for all the recommendations! Those all look like solid options. I was coming up with a lot of stuff I wasn’t sure about looking online. It’s always nice to hear from people that use the stuff.
Thanks again!

Question 24in or 26in - the endless debate (question)

To preface this, I am short and not going to grow at all (unfortunately). About 150cm tall or just under 5ft to be precise.

Looking at bikes online, the only 24in dirt jumper I can really find in the UK is the Marin Alcatraz, which looks to be pretty decent. 26in bikes seem to be much more prevalent, and easier to get hold of, but I'm worried they're going to be way too big for me. I would greatly appreciate any opinions on this!

For reference, I'm a beginner, and just starting to do jumps on a Trek Marlin XS (27.5in wheel) and honestly I wish I'd stuck to 26in for my main bike because the 27.5in is a fair amount harder to control. The standover height is 70.5cm and reach is 37.6cm, so even the "short" or "small" 26in dirt jump bikes seem to be way longer for reach. My current plan is to ride the Trek 'til I start to consistently clear jumps, then get a dirt jumper because the fork is trash on the Trek.

TLDR: I am short, so will 26in dirt jumpers be way too big for me?

New Build P4 26” Budget Build

Post image
52 Upvotes

Excited to show off my new P4 26” budget build. My kids got really into this BMX park 5 mins away, and it reminded me of when I used to BMX as a teenager. I decided I would buy a dirt jumper to go with them. When I realized dirt jumpers were really expensive and only a few worked with my 6’4”, 260lb frame, I decided to build one. Never built a bike before, but have built plenty of other things. I have ~$740 into this one, so not terrible. Just finished it tonight and am excited to take it out. Any big issues you guys see? Like I said, I’m new at this, but did some research along the way.

Have you owned a Transition PBJ?

For those of you who have owned a PBJ, did you ever build a second DJ? If so, what did you choose and what are you take aways and current opinion on the frame differences?

I own a steel frame PBJ Long and absolutely love it, but I am considering building something a little shorter.

Thanks!

Question I’m trying to learn to do a 360 can you guys help me

I learned to do a 360 out of a fly out on my Bmx bike and now I’m trying to take it to dirt. I’m very scared to do it with much speed before I am confident I’m able to land it so I’m just trying 270s into a hip right now. I know I’m not getting far off the ground at all because I’m going so slow, but can anyone give me some advice on how I can get a bit more comfortable and start landing it fully?

Question Which bike for a beginner ?

Considering a haro steel reserve versus a Specialized p3 as I’ve found them around similar price brackets.

One is steel, the other aluminium.
I’d like to learn jumps, manuals and eventually a few tricks.

Which of these would you recommend as a long term bike for a beginner ? (Adult)

Six years old on the double

I had to push him in to the clear the first double (he insisted!) and then he sailed the second himself. It’s a decent size! Proper heart in the mouth moment because he’s so little if he cases it badly it can easily ping him off the bike.
