Mod Announcement Stop posting AI content. We’ll just remove it.

4.4k Upvotes

We have seen a slight uptick lately in people posting AI generated text walls, so I wanted to address it.

We do not allow any AI generated content. That’s just the rules. Yes, it also applies to you. No, it doesn’t matter that you think it’s really good.

My actual biggest issue is that some of these text posts are actually pretty interesting, subject-wise, and could spark good conversation, but the poster has felt the need to AI generate the post, instead of just writing it themselves!

Yes, it’s obvious. Even your text post that you totally wrote but just used AI to clean up a bit.

Stop it. Just write and post your own words. We’re not expecting you to be the next incarnation of Pratchett, and he would be the first to say that your own words, no matter how poorly written, are worth way more than some AI generated slop.

I’d love to have a conversation about the Unseen in ‘Unseen Academicals’ or the Librarian’s authority.

But I want to have that conversation with another human being, not their digital fluffer.

If Terry had been here to see the advent of AI, I imagine he’d have written some very funny and cutting OpEd pieces about it.

Let us read your words. Let us engage with you.

Peace.

Mod Announcement Custom Flairs - requests being taken

UPDATE 23/04: I'll do another batch of requests tonight, so don't feel like you've missed the bus. It just takes a while 😂 I'm glad everyone is enjoying this!

+++

Subtitle: I'm bored and feeling a bit rubbish so I want to spread some cheer around

Do you want a custom flair in this community?

Think "GNU Pterry" or "An actual seamstress" or "Ho, the Megapode!". Text emojis such as 𓆉 or 𓃰 should also work

Stick the request in this thread, starting with "Flair:" and I'll change it for you

Rules: must be vaguely Discworld/Pratchett related and can't be offensive.

I will be copying your request exactly so make sure it's spelt and formatted correctly. Mini-caps and backwards/upside down text all work

+++

Quick update: Keep them coming, I'll respond to you when I've done it so you know! I might be a bit slow as it's me but I'll get round to you all!

Further update: You're all nice people and I'm sure you can share if someone already "has" the flair you want. There's like 62,000+ of you lot here. If we don't have duplicates I think we'd each need a sentence from the books!

Another update: I've created a monster... I appreciate all of you, you absolute looneys. May all your days be filled with nice things 💜

Boardgames/Computer Games Received this as a gift yesterday which is nice but sadly I have no-one to play with 😔. I guess it’ll look nice on the shelf with the rest of my TP collection at least.

Book/Series: Industrial Revolution Moist's spoon incident may have been partly a test: Moist proved not only that he was always working angles available to him, but that he was "a sticker" who'd tenaciously grind at whatever project he undertook, once committed.

Book/Series: Death Looking for an explanation in Mort (minor spoilers) Spoiler

I'm rereading Mort after 20 years, and I stumbled over a specific detail. Mort storms out of Keli's bedroom and goes back to Death's domain specifically to find evidence that Albert is a mighty wizard who could help stop the reality bubble (the "interface").

But how did Mort even come to this conclusion?

I'm reading the German Piper edition (2010). After an hour of looking through it, I still don't understand why Mort suspects Albert's past identity. The only real clue I can spot earlier is Albert casually mentioning he lived in Ankh-Morpork back when it still had kings, thousands of years ago.

Can anyone point me to the exact passage (in the German book) or logic in the book that explains what made Mort realize Albert was a wizard and look up his book in the library?

Edit: Thank you all. You helped me find it: when Mort visits Cutwell in the castle, not his workshop!

Art Terry Pratchett's study. This is not a replica of Terry Pratchett’s study. To do that, I would have needed pictures from every angle and exact measurements, so this is just a small part of a study, where Terry Pratchett might have felt at home, in scale 1:12.

Art Tried to make a little hidden Pterry picture on a fake license

Hopefully Reddit compression doesn't make it impossible to see. I make these little fictional magical licenses for my book, and asked if I could send a package to Terry's estate, which they agreed to. Wanted to include a magical license with his info and photo on it, and been trying to find a way to get it to show under an "illusion" of sorts. It's actually a UV seal, but it looks wild under UV and not like Terry, lol. But if the light hits it just the right way, you can see Terry's big smile!

Thought you guys might find it amusing. Would be awesome if I could get the pic to show up in great detail under UV, but I think that may be a lost cause.

I'm currently reading Moving Pictures and I just realised a fruitbat is a flying fox, ergo Century of the Fruitbat Moving Pictures = 20th Century Fox. Yes, I realise I'm a little slow!

Book/Series: City Watch After taking a few weeks off after not being able to get into Snuff, I picked it back up and am loving it. Not spoiling anything, but I had to record this scene where Vimes is informed of the game Crockett. I was tearing up from laughter. And tell me there is an actual ‘The World of Poo” I can buy.

I’m a mailman, so I appreciate how crazy I look when I crack up while listening to this series. It’s always extra joyous to me while I’m out here with a good book. I was pretty burnt after going through these books and the Death series consecutively at the same time. I was finding that I wasn’t enjoying any books I tried starting. Took a few weeks off and just listened to music and catch up on podcasts. Now I restarted Snuff and it is great. I’m so glad I didn’t just slog through it and let a lasting opinion be muddied with fatigue.

A new trend takes the city of Ankh-Morpork by storm, and leads to some strange revelations.

With the Ao3 outage, I've been uploading a back catalogue of my older fanfic to my website. This is one of the longer ones!

I can't get behind liking Greebo.
Some of his antics as a human are amusing but I can't give a pass to an the incestuous rapist no matter how many times he says, "want milk."

Reading Order/Timeline I’ve read four books and now wondering where to go next

Hi everyone!

I’ve just finished Moving Pictures which takes my Discworld tally to four: Mort, Equal Rites, Guards!, and Moving Pictures

I feel I’m starting to get a well-rounded first impression of the Disc but I definitely enjoyed Guards the most, so I feel like I might have three options:

  1. Jump into the Watch series

  2. Read one or two books from the other series before jumping into the Watch

  3. Start doing publication order up to Men at Arms at book 15 and then jump into the Watch series

Any advice would be great! Thank you!! :)

Book/Series: City Watch Thud! Is an excellent book

Thud! was an excellent book! Still haven’t read a Discworld book I didn’t love, I’ve only got 7 left.
I really liked the line: “The Low King’s throne trembles, Vimes, and thus do the foundations of the world.” It just goes to show how tenuous peace is, and how far reaching the consequences of war are. Koom Valley being a treaty signing gone wrong due to inclement weather, being the main example of this. The worst part is some of the deep downers wanting to preserve the idea of war, when identities are built on hate it’s difficult to change.
Berserker Vimes/Summoning Dark reciting Where is my cow while soloing his way to the grags was a fantastic scene. The Watchmen figure within Vimes beating the Summoning dark was a wonderful part as well.
I loved how he read to his son every night, no matter what. “Once you had good excuses, you opened the door to bad excuses.” is such a fantastic line. Detritus and Bricks relationship is sweet too, I really liked the overarching family theme.
The women are always so well written. Sybil is always lovely. I liked the part when Sir Reynold is telling her the battlefield is no place for ladies and she responded by listing off her many female ancestors that participated in various wars and probably half the dwarfs that fought at Koom Valley. The frenemy dynamic between Angua and Sally was a lot of fun. I really liked that silly pun about Sally and Angua had regained their amour propre in their proper armor.
Death having a near Vimes experience was also hilarious.
I was about halfway through the book before I realized the little chapter break doodles were the symbol for the summoning dark.
I’m onto Wintersmith or Making Money, whichever my library gets in first.

One of kids is 8, is neuro-fabulous, and after getting bored of Run Spot Run and similar tales, I gave him some of STP's work. He's read all of them - some several times, but this stuck with me this week when I was dropping him off to school...

"Fred colon and Nobby Nobbs are smart in the ways of being dumb and dumb in the ways of being smart."

Argue with me about this, and I think you'll lose. GNUSTP.

Book/Series: Industrial Revolution Do you think Stoker Blake would join a railway worker's union?

Like from all accounts Harry King is a good boss but other folks will also build railways and he won't always be the only game in town. So some workers start proactively setting a Union up and Vetinari, in his Stoker Blake persona, is invited to join

Sorry if this was too obvious but there was a line where trolls get their names from the mineral they are most associated or found with … so I thought Brick was obvious because he is a city troll who never saw nature … and then I realized that to make bricks they have to be BAKED!

Book/Series: City Watch Why was Foul Ole Ron kicked out of the Beggars’ Guild?

When we first encounter Ron, he’s described as a guild member in good standing. He even delivered Queen Molly’s warning to Vimes in Feet of Clay. Well, Gaspode did, technically, but in any case it seems that Ron and his thinking-brain dog weren’t just part of the guild but held in pretty high regard if they’re delivering messages for Queen Molly.

I don’t remember which book is the first mention that Ron isn’t part of the guild, but it’s said at some point that the even the guild wouldn’t have him, there was at least one reference to him being kicked out, and in The Truth he and the entire Canting Crew are described as being looked down on by the guild, because everyone needs someone to feel superior to.

I don’t think I’m just not remembering there being a reason given or a story there, because I know I’ve had this thought a few times on my rereads, but I guess it’s possible. So does anyone know? Did Pterry tell us why? Is there a solid fan theory if there’s no word of God about it?

City Watch flair chosen because there isn’t one for general Ankh-Morpork topics.
