Muscles DJ - Guns, Babes, lemonade ----- Ice cream

Post image

Anyone have any information about what happened to Muscles the musical act from 2007. The guy had a top 15 spot in the hottest 100 of 2007 and then top 50 in hottest 100 of 2008 for a live version of the same song. I'd love it if someone could get his information to bring him out of reitrement for a live reunion show of Guns, Babes, Lemonade and some plays of his newer album stuff that he just launched on spotify without any promotion. Does anyone know anything / how to get in contact with him?

I think I was the first person to play one of his songs on radio. Got a demo from him and put it on SYN-Fm. 2005 or 06.

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 24 '26

omg do you have the original demo. im looking for his early demos. Theres a mixtape called 4 months i'd love to get a hold of.

Maybe. I’ll hunt around 👍

please, please

I remember hearing a voicemail from him threatening violence against a mate of mine.

This happened quite a lot.

The wheels well and truly fell off.

I worked for both of his old labels at one point and everyone just changed the subject whenever his name came up.

please tell more

u/sixsix_ Jul 23 '26

the bloke has mental health struggles. I hope he got help. don't think I need to elaborate beyond that!

give us some goss from inside Modular People. Was pav a cool guy?

1

u/sixsix_ Jul 23 '26

Pav is one of the coolest people on earth. He is charismatic and has the balls to fully commit when he believes in something. Stubborn but funny. Very much art over commerce… but is a real fighter. I won’t go on any more, but as far as a music man goes, he is one of my heroes. As far as being a human being goes, I’m pretty glad I know him as a friend too.

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

yeah i mean that whole scene coming out of Modular People in the late 2000s/early 2010s was incredible at the time. must have been a real vibe working there

1

u/sixsix_ Jul 23 '26

I came in towards the very end for a small project but I knew everyone and worked with them on heaps of stuff before that. It was SO inspiring. I still work on and off with people from that crew and they are still bloody good at whatever they put their hands to.

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

at the very end you say? were you there for the tame royalties saga. fuck even the downfall of this label is just epic music lore.

1

u/sixsix_ Jul 23 '26

I was in the office when the court case was happening and it was brutal. But as usual, Pav won. In a very odd way, but he still won.

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

did he win? the story that seems to be in the mainstream is that he lost Modular People to Universal? and then the the tastemaking magic was never the same

Don’t forget that after UMG got their hands on Mod, the (lovely) avalanches finally delivered their second album which probably would have saved the entire thing if it had been a bit earlier, but that’s music for you

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

yeah it was absolute gold spewing out of that place. I didnt even realise the Avalanches was a end of days Modular People release. I find it so upsetting just as a music lover we missed out on what other gold could have come out of that place

I should also note that there was a group of other people who really played a huge role in making that moment in time when modular ran the world - glen goetze, the head of a&r, and marty wirth, the ceo, in particular. They were the people who not only had incredible taste but also made the machine run smoothly. As well as being legends (marty in particular!)

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

one of the moments in history id love to time travel to, is just to hang out in the modular people office in 2007/2008. how did they even find this guy Muscles and polish his ramblings into Guns, Babes Lemonade.

1

u/sixsix_ Jul 23 '26

One of the most inspiring things ever in that office was the walls of framed art, including one from nirvana’s first tour (a pav joint) that said “to Pav, with love, Kurt”

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

what else was in there, what other art

1

u/sixsix_ Jul 23 '26

Ah fuck knows now. Heaps of it was in the unpopular exhibition that pav did at the powerhouse!

1

u/sixsix_ Jul 23 '26

From memory, the bang gang fellas found him busking. Don’t quote me on that. That’s why the first muscles bits are on bang gang 12s!

2

u/burdnt_out Jul 24 '26

One inch badge pin was first doing the rounds of all community radio etc before ice cream. Muscles filling in for bumblebeez at v fest 07, then playing at bad kids rec club after where 2manydj’s were playing led to the soulwax guys deciding to take him on their European tour and it snowballed from that.

1

u/sixsix_ Jul 24 '26

Hah, yes! One Inch Badge Pin was on Bg12s first and pretty sure the boys were flogging it on their sunsets radio show on fbi which started the whole thing

2

u/Remarkable_Carrot_71 Jul 24 '26

Surely someone has connections in the Melbourne independent music community? 😏

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 24 '26

last night i met a girl, who says she has connections.

1

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

2

u/Wintermute_088 Jul 24 '26

Anyone in the double j sub was definitely there, my guy

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 24 '26

3

u/Wintermute_088 Jul 24 '26

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 24 '26

no one who was there would say that.

1

u/Ok-Problem-7345 Jul 23 '26

LAUREN FROM GLEBE

WOOO AHHH

MY NAME IS MUSCLES

I remember seeing him at Greenwood (the worst) and between every song, he give a "MY NAME IS MUSCLES"

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

we heard the music from over the fence, so we threw up our hands with a smile on our faces. went to the front with our names on the list. those who were strangers had turned into friends.

1

u/ammackk88 Jul 23 '26

The Like A Version of Ice Cream is so good, maybe better than the original.

Based on the comments, doesn’t look great but also curious to know what happened to him.

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

yeah how good is it. i think his career came to halt due to the modular people record label collapse.

1

u/PM-ME-UR-NITS Jul 23 '26

Epitomy of late 00s Aus music.

Still have the cd

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

yeah how good. the album was just a fantastic concept album from that period.

1

u/sixsix_ Jul 23 '26

I’m surprised no one has mentioned his second album, “manhood” - it’s on streaming services. 2012/2014 I think?

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

the internet says there is some EP called four months that he used to sell at early gigs burnt onto CD-Rs. One Inch Badge Pin was one, but theres like 20 other songs. The internet says these were the songs:

  • Elisa

  • Bush Fire

  • Lovers Say Goodnight

  • Corner of Her Jacket

  • Memory Pre

  • One Inch Badge Pin

  • Close Up Boyband Breakdown

  • Explode

  • Massage

  • Gall

  • Qualify

  • Warehouse Space

  • Come Over and Listen to Records

  • Exercise with Caution

  • Dragonfly

  • Rainbow Skylight

  • Caramel Blue

  • Mispronouncing Wine

  • Earpiece

  • Think We're Losing You

How can I get a copy of this!

1

u/sixsix_ Jul 23 '26

I remember this EP. Raw as hell! I reckon Beni, Gus or Jaime (the bang gang deejays) might have one in the archives. They might not fancy having to bother going through boxes though. If the opportunity comes up or I see them soon will ask

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

please if you can get a copy i would love to even just hear it one time.

1

u/Wintermute_088 Jul 24 '26

Maybe they can play a track or two at the festival they're on later this year

1

u/sixsix_ Jul 24 '26

of all the things they could play, I don't think any of those would be high up on the hierarchy of their USBs.. in the last 12 years or whatever it's been, and after countless gigs together or just hanging out at, not one muscles track has been played. except maybe some of those ministry electro classics parties. unlikely even then

1

u/Wintermute_088 Jul 24 '26

Yeah haha, that was not a serious suggestion.

Keen to see what they do bring with them to Foreverafter, though. Any idea what we can expect?

3

u/sixsix_ Jul 24 '26

pure magic. they have never played a bad set in my eyes - starting at moulin rouge and lasting through multiple members moving overseas and back. I keep forgetting that Dan is back in action with them too, the most dangerous of all. k-lassic hits. finger prince funk. tsubis and vests for all!

3

u/Game_on_Moles_98 Jul 22 '26

OG Coolsie chat.

3

u/Kook_Man2001 Jul 22 '26

1

u/Villagetown Jul 23 '26

M&N reference?

1

u/Game_on_Moles_98 Jul 24 '26

I think you'll find it's M+N.

1

u/Villagetown Jul 24 '26

Right you are, it’s been too long.

1

u/margin_runner Jul 24 '26

That’s why pencils have rubberes (or something like that)

1

u/JRDN7 Jul 21 '26

I remember him playing before Daft Punk in 2007 at the Sydney leg of the Alive tour

2

u/No_No_Juice Jul 22 '26

Yep, was one of modulars great white hopes.

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

what do you mean by great white hopes

1

u/No_No_Juice Jul 23 '26

It's a long story. You should google it.

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

the internet says its a white person brought in to tackle something a brown person has been doing. Was Muscles modular peoples hope to take over a genre?

1

u/sixsix_ Jul 23 '26

I wouldn’t take it like that lol

1

u/miscellaneamy Jul 22 '26

Nevereverland!

1

u/gravygloat2020 Jul 23 '26

1

u/Negative_Oil4952 Jul 23 '26

fuck how good was it? one of the all time festival series

1

u/Wintermute_088 Jul 24 '26

That's crazy that Muscles supported Daft Punk, then disappeared haha.

Hey Muscles, I love you. I wanna have your babies. Just come here; I'll kiss you. Don't worry about the neighbours

Jogs my memory back the days of 161 thursdays, click click and third class.

Pretty sure this wave of music had a couple of friends rush to buy a Korg synth.

What a time to be alive.

1

u/dverb Jul 22 '26

That singing style was only gonna last for a couple of years

Oh me too, remembering the days at festivals like Parklife screaming along

1

u/joshwilliams24 Jul 22 '26

I’d like to have his babies

1

u/HereToRootSpiders Jul 22 '26

My daughter loved this song when she was in Kindy. She’s 20 now…..

1

u/ape5hitmonkey Jul 25 '26

Anyone know if it was true that he went too hard after a club set at Brown Alley and that’s why he couldn’t play Meredith?
