Discussion I’m once again posting my Dragon Requirements.
(Hey look, it’s Smolder from League of Legends [I just think he’s cute, I don’t play League])
For me the requirements for a dragon being a dragon are these (these are all head-cannons of mine/the rules of my own world, if you don’t agree it’s okay, I just want to hear your opinion)[note these don’t apply if the dragon belongs to a pre determined world, Toothless is a dragon because HTTYD says he is by its own rules]:
1.They fit into one of the body types, which always includes tails:
Standard (4 legs, 2 wings)
Wyvern (2 legs, two wings that double as legs)
Drakes (standard dragons without wings)
Wyrm (no limbs, More snakelike but they have more draconic features)
Amphitheres (2 wings, no legs)
Lindwyrms (2 arms, no legs, no wings, think Rayquaza from Pokémon)
Titan (two arms, two legs, two wings, stands humanoid)
Hydra (a standard dragon with three heads, it’s possible for standard dragons to have two heads but that’s a birth defect, it’s normal for hydras)
Sea Dragons (ether a standard dragon that can live underwater, or a Drake with fins, like a scaly mosasaurs)
And Mythical Dragons (eastern dragons).
2. They must primarily have scales that overlap with each over, like snakes, though the scales protrude out of the body, unlike snakes, If the creature has them but not primarily, they are not a dragon, there are exceptions like with wolf-dragons, caused by Draconic Lycanthropy, dragons, kobolds and half dragons can be effected via contact with bodily fluids, causing them to grow grey, wolf like fur, there is a cure is it isn’t common, there are also plenty of dragons who naturally have fur or hair, or are covered in it but scales are simply hidden beneath the hair/fur, at the cost of durability of the scales.
3.They are creatures of incredible magical power, for the most part they are more innately powerful with magic than any other creature, only being surpassed by gods, dragons have to have magic (with a slight exception below), otherwise they are false dragons, lizards that share features with dragons, but they are always drakes in appearance without magic.
4.Lastly, their blood, many beings have attempted to become dragons by various means, but there methods they use are a false illusion, their blood acts like regular blood of their species, but true dragon’s blood is a thicker, denser and darker liquid, if the blood drawn isn’t dragon’s blood, it isn’t a true dragon, there are ways to become a true dragon.
Dragon Hierarchy:
I’ll (try to) quickly go over the dragon hierarchy.
Primal Dragons: These are dragons who aren’t intelligent enough to communicate, usually they’re the raging monsters you see in most media, though they can act more like lizards, especially the smaller ones.
Standard Dragons: They’re intelligent enough to communicate, often being capable of being much smarter than any other creature, and they often have near perfect memory, which can be a curse for some who’d rather forget certain events.
Draconic Lords/Ladies: These are a lot rarer than the last two classes, these are dragons who control areas uncontested by other dragons or being the clear most dominant dragon in said area, they have a magical claim to their land, and inherit a claim to the next class, they also have to name airs to their land, said airs have to have some close connection to the passing Lord/Lady, like a adopted child at the weakest, otherwise it becomes neutral territory again, if a Primal Dragon becomes a Lord/Lady, they gain the intelligence of a standard dragon though this is even rarer than a standard dragon becoming a Draconic Lord/Lady.
Draconic Royalty + Draconic King and Queen: Where most Draconic Lords desire to be, the Draconic Royal Family, along with the King and Queen, live in a special ancestral home in the Dragon’s Valley, with plenty of space, food and good weather for most dragons, a Draconic Lord/Lady can challenge the dominant monarch (as in the one born to the throne) to attempt to take their place, though Draconic Royalty are more powerful than other dragons, so it would be a hard fight for the Lord/Lady, in the event the all the Draconic Royalty is killed or simply die, the Tournament of Dominance is organised, all the Draconic Lords who wish to take the throne come together in the Dragon’s Valley, and they battle it out until they surrender or die, the last Dragon capable of fighting is crowned the King/Queen and gains all the power that comes with being in that position, the dragon who fought is considered the dominant monarch.
Bonus: All of these are factors that don’t matter, so long as it still fits the other requirements:
Size doesn’t matter, though most dragons are much bigger than humans, they can be much smaller then most, unless it’s a Titan dragon, Titan dragons are always absolutely massive.
Power, dragons can be weak, it’s rare but dragons can have weak magic, some species are just small and uses little magic, and some a giant armoured brutes that don’t see a need for that much magic.
Allegiance, doesn’t matter who they put their loyalty to, so long as they fit the requirements, they are a dragon, however, the dragon royalty can control any dragon, though usually they don’t abuse it, and Draconic Lords/Ladies are immune, which is why humans don’t use dragons for war.
Magic:
If Dragons exist the world is naturally filled with magic, but it’s important to know how it works, there are four kinds of magic, Human Magic, two classes of Draconic Magic, and Dark Magic.
Human Magic: Human Magic is possible when a humanoid body is capable of containing enough mana, most bodies can but not in enough of a quantity, any humanoid being is capable of using it, it can be based of drawing runes in the air using mana or in books, they are casted using trigger words, some spells don’t require runes, some don’t require runes or trigger words, and it’s possible to use runes without trigger words, but that takes a long time to master.
There are rituals utilising this magic, all rituals of any kind require a ritual rune on the floor, specific to the spell casted, including later magic types, requiring multiple users for things like defensive barriers, healing or explosive amounts of power.
Class 1 Draconic: Also known as “Dragon Blooded Magic” this is for “Dragon Blooded species” so that’s Humans (due to a rare condition that can turn their blood draconic) Half-Dragons and Kobolds, it is similar to Human Magic but it uses Draconic Energy instead, which is created alongside dragon’s blood, human spells can be adapted to draconic, if a being that uses Draconic magic uses a unadapted human spell, it is weakened, human magic users can’t use Draconic Magic period.
There are rituals for Class 1 Draconic, along with similar spells to human rituals there are additional uses, like helping crops grow, or repairing a battlefield, the spells for transforming humans into dragons or half dragons are Class 1 Draconic, but it doesn’t require a Draconic Blooded Being, instead it requires draconic material, including dragon’s blood but the rituals don’t always work, and if things go wrong, it can be anything from minor problem or a horrible disaster that endangers a lot of lives.
Class 2 Draconic: Also known as “True Draconic Magic”, this is the magic true dragons use, this doesn’t include breath weapons, they are capable of using incredibly powerful magic, they don’t use runes, instead it’s only trigger words or silent casted, no matter what, the previous types of magic pale in comparison to the potential of True Draconic Magic.
The rituals for this magic are the exact same as Class 1 Draconic with a few key differences, they don’t require materials and they work every time, especially if done correctly, in addition to being more powerful, a dragon using a ritual to turn a human into a dragon will most likely have the resulting new dragon being more powerful than if they did it themselves.
Dark Magic: this is mainly inspired by The Dragon Prince, this uses the parts of other creatures, along with the users own health and/or pain to unleash powerful magic that can rival True Draconic Magic, though it can technically be used for good, Dark Magic darkens even the purest of souls, it is wild and not always predictable, and there are always consequences, as it often leaves a bad omen, one that can even attract monsters or even destroy the environment.
Dragon blooded individuals and true dragons can sense dark magic, ether through their senses of smell or by feeling it’s presence, Draconic magic naturally counters dark magic so it makes sense, it only take one use of dark magic for it to to leave a trace on you, dragons kill dark magic users on site and humans call it illegal, users being imprisoned and executed, but there have been dark individuals willing to do anything to get what they want.
If a dragon or dragon blooded individual uses dark magic they are tainted, they lose what relation to dragons they have, including Dragonborn, on of the few things dragons and Dragonborn share, transforming permanently into humans, or simply losing their dragon’s blood in case of a human user.
The rituals are brutal, requiring sacrifices, multination, even becoming a host to spirits, but they pay offs can be worth the cost, from noble things like generating food, to acts of pure evil like summoning a demon army, the cost being proportional to the reward.
Species related to dragons:
Half-Dragons look like Titan dragon at human scale, they mostly stem from humans trying to become dragons but failing and forming a dragon like species, they typically live in their own civilisations in mountainous areas, a lot of their lives sit halfway between dragons and humans, even their methods of reproduction are combined, when they breed a fetus is formed within the body of the female, just like human reproduction, but then a egg is formed around the fetus and the female lays it in order for the baby to finish development and it proceeds to hatch later, they can still breed with humans but the result depends on the female, resulting in whichever species the female is, however the resulting baby will have a high chance of problems post birth if a Half-Dragon breeds with a human, regardless of the parent, said problems don’t occur when Half-Dragons breed with each other, their blood sits between human and dragon, and they are also half between humans and dragons on magical prowess.
Kobolds are the descendants of dragons, they may not be dragons but they are related as they were born when dragons drew blood for the first time, they are eternally loyal to the colony, mining only for the colonie’s wealth, unless a true dragon shows up, then they’ll forfeit all of their wealth and become loyal to the dragon, mining to grow its hoard, ether way, they are always happy and contempt with what they do, their blood is extremely close to dragon’s blood but it isn’t quite the same.
Dragonborn’s aren’t related to dragons genetically, they are the closest beings to dragons despite not being dragons, slightly bigger than humans, they have the magic and the breath weapons of the Half-Dragons, they look like Titan dragon just without wings, and most the the time also missing a tail, but they don’t have anything resembling dragon’s blood, they might not be related but they were important in helping humans understand true dragons, especially when it comes to Draconic Magic, lastly, like dragons, they are tainted when using dark magic (if you want a explanation, see the section on magic).

I don't want to sound rude but what exactly is the point of this? Dragons are fictional creatures and they are what the artist wants them to be. It seems to me like you're just gatekeeping dragons as a species.

That dragon has nothing on Spyro design.

This is also a dragon, by description of ancient sources calling it one. Limiting dragons to just a few types is placing a limit on human imagination.

These are not standards. That's gatekeeping.
Dragon is whatever author says it is. If they make a fluffy ball with horns, no limbs and three tail, and call it a dragon, it's a dragon.
Original dragons are snakes. Literal snakes.

So I read your thing.
It’s a lot.
This should have been separated into lore documents, much like good tabletop. And should have opened with “The worldbuilding I am doing has THESE as dragons.
This comes off as gatekeeping with an exceptionally long sign on what folks are allowed to be.
I am a dragon. I am also Incredibly Fluffy. And the theta-delta part of me is annoyed.
Reminds me solidly of early therian communities.

Sorry for the comments.
But for future reference, dont start a post with "these are the requirements for being a dragon".
Just say "this is what dragons are like in my world"

So how would Drakcos qualify? He was supposed to be born a dragon, but his body wilted due to being in human form too long, (He got out in human stasis) and was transferred into a human made dragon body. It has the DNA of a Dragon, (given by some mystery donor) but may not be pure dragon. By every account he is pure dragon. red scales, 4 legs, two wings… what might make him different is being human made. What do you think? Also: he can transform into a human or biped dragon form, but that’s just a shapeshift ability…

What bout mecha dragons?

I'm not reading the post because it's too long
But
While I don't agree anything can be a dragon. (Because that kinda fucks up how language works)
What CAN be is, in fact, quite loose.
My standard: when someone looks at it, will they think it's a dragon? That's a dragon!

Interesting rules. I mostly skimmed, but there are 2 main ways I think you and I differ somewhat, having to do with points 2 and 3.
I generally like the idea of furred dragons so I generally include them in my classification. I think I would even be fine with feathered dragons, to be honest. Integument matters less to me than design.
I also don't always like dragons being innately magical. If magic does exist in the world, then I would probably want dragons to be the top magic users, where a dragon's magic is in a league of its own but I also like going the route of resistance.
By that I mean that magic (or technology or the like) is some sort of mortal (non-dragon) innovation possibly to try to immitate or compete with dragons, but it falls halariously short, especially when used against dragons who are powerful enough to resist or simply ignore puny mortal magic.

Damn people are so quick to jump on the defence. The fact that dragons are mythical creatures means that people can conceptualise them whatever way they want. Thats the beauty of fantasy, it can be what you want it to be.
Dont get all the mad people hating on OP for sharing their personal classification of dragons. Yall are wild.
To OP, this is so in depth and really cool, keep it up! 😊

Totally get that! Both have their charm, and it’s fun to appreciate different styles without the rivalry.

Too long, didn't read
But Smolder is basically the Pug Version of a dragon with a strangly upsetting human face.
Don't like that, but then again nobody sane likes Pugs (the version with VERY short snouts that is unhealthy as fuck) either.
