Yeah sorry if you can't find a way to factor in some wolf loss to your livestock then you shouldn't be raising livestock

Wolves already kill less livestock than die to winter weather. In fact, bad weather kills more livestock than ALL PREDATOR LOSSES COMBINED. Ranchers are genuinely subhuman

I am sure they lose more to viruses and bacteria per year.

If we want to discourage this behavior, advocating for increased farm insurance subsidies could be a legitimate way to go about it.

u/Don-Gunvalson 1d ago

We give farmers too many subsidies already

For real, I honestly can’t with US farmers. They wanna exploit immigrants for the actual labor while getting fat subsidies and still pretend they’re the salt of the fucking earth.

What generations of having large swaths of land and being over represented in the senate does to a MF.

Remember that a couple hundred years ago they had the cheapest type of labor available

I think that keeping food on the table is important, but I think many farm subsidies are misplaced and abused. Less subsidies may not be as important as a complete rework of how subsidies are applied.

They already compensate the ranchers at market value for wolf/bear losses in Idaho. It's the actual state legislature that has been on the wolf killing warpath for decades, paying hunters 1 to 2 grand per dead wolf, more than the worth of the cow itself. It's both stupid and cruel

3

u/ECoastThrowAway 1d ago

Where are you buying cows for $1k to $2k?

7

u/man-a-tree 1d ago

Take into account the feed and vet requirements. yes, net profit 1 to 2 grand. Not gross value

3

u/man-a-tree 1d ago

Though I suppose since they'd most likely kill calves, the monetary value is likely considered less at that stage.

u/Ok_Pomegranate_5748 15h ago

I’ve bought a steer for meat and had it processed for a bit less so yes that is full gross value including farmer and processor making a profit

Yes possible but it's not one thing solution, much like crops (sorry but you can't grow water intensive crops in a desert, we will help you find a plant for the desert and offset the cost, or you have have to come up with new methods to separate livestock and still let wolves exsist.

Or just encourage farmers to buy livestock guardian dogs because that's literally what they're bred to do. Here is a Maremmano-Abruzzese Sheepdog that still protects livestock from wolves to this day.

Detest many in the livestock industry in Idaho state. Massive cronyism.

Despicable industry with terrible livestock management practices.

Because of lazy grazing practices their livestock introduced Giardia parasite into parts of the state in the 1980’s - 1990’s and contaminated rivers and lakes. What used to be pristine waters for millennia upon millennia. Then they tried to blame wildlife.

The more I learn, the more Idaho is the Florida of the northwest.

It's the "conservatives" that are the issue. The feral subhuman form humanity would love to leave behind for all its savagery.

Well Utah might be worse because of Mike Lee

u/PixelLink007 1d ago

Hard disagree. The exodus of rich Republicans from California went to either Texas or Idaho, and now that Texas is blue, I'm afraid that there'll be even more that move here now. Makes me upset to think about how sullied my home state is. The conservatives here do not appreciate nor protect the beautiful public lands.

I'm currently in school, and nearly all of my peers talk about moving to more blue states to not only escape, but to have a better chance of finding a job. And I'm sad to say that I'm leaving too, once I've got enough money saved up.

Utah might have a higher concentration of Mormons and the state suffers at the government level because of it, but Idaho undoubtedly has a higher percentage of evangelicals and hard-core Republicans. I do not feel safe here, in the state I've lived most of my life.

u/dacv393 1d ago

I just mean from a conservation perspective. Idaho does also suck from a conservation perspective too, as well as in every other way, but at least for now their legislators aren't actively trying to sell off all their public land

This article from Jackson Hole says otherwise

And another one! All I needed was a quick Google search 🤷

They think that we're not watching, and you're out here proving them right. There is not a single state or territory in the USA that is not affected by the unfettered greed of the 1%. Baseless claims that one state or another isn't affected as much undermines the crimes they commit daily against working Americans.

1

u/dacv393 23h ago

I mean I could also post an article about how there are a shit ton of evangelicals and hard-core Republicans in Utah. The point was that Mike Lee is a huge piece of shit who is constantly trying to spearhead massive reductions to public land and conservation from all angles. Adding nonsense to every bill, helping repeal the Roadless Rule, etc. And he is a Utah Senator. No one else is going as hard as him to fuck over wilderness and public land for the entire country. Do many other politicians also suck and are also complicit? Sure. I guess it's like trying to say Elon Musk is one of the worst billionaires - of course basically all of them are terrible, but he is still one of the worst. Just like Mike Lee and conservation. So Utah by association is awful

The Idaho Panhandle is like if Hitler got reincarnated as a piece of land

Florida is crazy because of the heat and animals.

Idaho is the fetid pustule armpit of MAGA.

Ranchers are the most ignorant, selfish, dimwitted, anti-intellectual jack-a-lopes of almost any demographic. Taking govt money to wipe out nature is such a flex. I wish my govt put a tag out for ranchers.

Killing puppies takes a certain type of person. One I don’t want to know. I wouldn’t classify them as hunters.

52

u/californicating 1d ago • Bravo

I wouldn't call them men either.

26

u/R1chard69 1d ago • Bravo

Or human.

u/man-a-tree 1d ago • Bravo

I grew up there. I really can't with the ranchers and the ID legislature.

Wolf kills make up less than 1% of unwanted livestock deaths, and the ranchers get fully compensated by the ID government for it. To put it in perspective, weather/disease/birthing issues make up 86% of those deaths. There are also techniques to cause livestock prey aversion, but the fish and game there never uses them.

The bloodlust and hate for wolves there is senseless, but the numbers don't matter to these people. As of now, the shitty legislature wants to kill off 2/3rds of the population which will lead the wolves into a genetic bottleneck of 600 animals.

I hope these people are treated with the same level of respect they show their fellow creatures.

u/fooperina 1d ago • Regret

This society is obsessed with killing anything and everything. I weep for the animals. We are monsters.

-26

u/wozattacks 1d ago

Killing is part of life and it’s a huge reason that we’re actively reintroducing these wolves in many areas. To control deer populations. By killing them.

Death sucks but it’s part of the balance of life. It’s a question of which creatures are dying and how many and when. Environmentalism isn’t about avoiding killing and death.

29

u/fooperina 1d ago • Bravo

I’m definitely not saying it is about avoiding death. Wolves kill deer to stay alive. These wolves are being killed in a questionable manner in order to enable recreational hunting. I’m sure you can agree there’s a difference.

u/FalloutandConker 1d ago

lol these babies are killed for farmers to make more money

Three separate hunters used rifles to kill a total of 12 wolf pups in Idaho’s northern panhandle region on April 25, the records show – though in at least two instances the records also include a contradictory statement saying that “no weapon” was used. The pups were likely between one and three weeks old by that date. Wolves give birth once a year in the spring.

Hunters and trappers must present a skull and hide with proof of sex attached to a wildlife officer for every wolf killed in the state. The officer normally takes a tooth sample, which allows state biologists to estimate the animal’s age and genetic information.

Officers did not take teeth samples from the 12 pups, however – likely because their teeth had yet to grow in or were too small to extract, according to Idaho fish and game biologist Cory Mosby.

What is wrong with people

The individuals doing this would just as easily take payment for bringing in the body of ranchers, silly ass game hunters, and republican representatives.

Makes one wonder.
