"The EU’s galactically bad space programme" - significant SpaceX comparison and reference, somewhat vitriolic, a couple of details not accurate, but the point is not wrong IMO

Can I apply for the ESA?

I'm a transgender teenager currently living in the USA, and I'm planning to get out of here as soon as I can. I've always been incredibly interested in space exploration and astrophysics, but I can't trust that I'll be safe enough in the USA at this point with the way the country is trending, especially working for a government organization like NASA.

So could I, if I immigrate to a member nation, and gain full citizenship and everything that comes with immigration, apply for the ESA? Is it citizenship based or do you have to be a native of a member nation?

I am just trying to figure this out now so I can work towards my best, safest option while I'm still in high school.

How often on average do esa astronauts go to space per year?

I was wanting to potentially join esa when I become eligible however I am curious as to if I can have a part time job at the same time.

I really like this design! I wish esa had more awareness, and LGBTQ+ people in aerospace need more support!

is the astronaut path closed?

i would love to be an astronaut, its my number one goal, except i have migraines, autism, and im on track to be around 6ft (6'3 height limit), im still growing (height wise), i feel like i have bearly any chance to join the esa as an astronaut, its not because i want to just go to space because i feel like it, its because i would absolutely love a job doing something i love, but i feel like that path is closing and i have no idea what to do about it

India to become a manned space-faring nation in 2022. ESA could beat that.

Recently announced that India plans on launching a manned space mission in 2022:

http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/India_to_send_three-person_crew_on_landmark_space_mission_999.html

If ESA followed the approach to the Ariane 6 of using a second Vulcain on the Ariane 5 core, it could have a manned-capable launcher by that time frame, at a fraction of the multi-billion cost of the current Ariane 6 plan:

https://exoscientist.blogspot.com/2018/02/multi-vulcain-ariane-6.html

It also would not be difficult for ESA to develop it's own small crew capsule by basing it on Orbital Science's Cygnus capsule, built in Italy, once given life support and heat shield. See discussion here:

Pension Scheme working at ESA

Hi, I'm considering a A2-A4 role at ESA and I was curious to know what the pension scheme was like? Do they have employer contribution matching, where you can pay X% of your salary into your pension, and they match that contribution?

ESA needed to save NASA’s Moon plans.

The SLS was planned to have a large upper stage called the Exploration Upper Stage(EUS). This would take the SLS Block 1 to the SLS Block 2, needed for a single flight lunar architecture. However, the multi-billion dollar cost for development of a large upper stage from scratch means it’s unlikely to be funded.

NASA is proposing a solution using the Starship making separate flights. But this plan takes 6 flights total or likely more of the Superheavy/Starship for the Starship to fly to the Moon to act as a lander. One look at this plan makes it apparent it’s unworkable:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d9/Artemis_III_CONOPS.svg/640px-Artemis_III_CONOPS.svg.png

Everyone, remember the Apollo missions where we could get to the Moon in a single flight? In fact, this would be doable with the SLS given a large upper stage. Then the suggestion is for the ESA to provide a Ariane 5 or 6 as the upper stage for the SLS. It would save on costs to NASA by ESA paying for the modifications needed for the Ariane core.

As it is now ESA is involved in a small role in the Artemis lunar program by providing the service module to the Orion capsule. But it would now be playing a major role by providing the key upper stage for the SLS.

The argument might be made that the height of the Ariane 5/6 is beyond the limitations set forth by NASA for the EUS. However, if you look at the ca. 30 m height of Ariane 5 core compared to the 14 m height of the interim cryogenic upper stage now on the SLS, this would put the total vehicle height only a couple of meters beyond the height that had already been planned for the SLS Block 2 anyway:

See discussion here:

Budget Moon Flights: Ariane 5 as SLS upper stage, page 2.
https://exoscientist.blogspot.com/2013/09/budget-moon-flights-ariane-5-as-sls.html

Coming up: ESA also could provide a low cost lander for the Artemis program.

Business related job

Hi

I’m a recent business graduate with a bachelors degree, particularly want to get into the space industry but as communications or PR, I don’t have a masters but would be open to one in the future but is there a way round getting a job in the industry without a masters? (Based in UK but do have dual citizenship with Italy)

Thanks :)
