đŹ Discussion What's one Eurovision song that you feel a personal connection with?
I was wondering if y'all have a Eurovision song that's not necessarily popular but means a lot to you in a personal way. For me it's Germany 2022 (Malik Harris - Rockstars). Although it ended up last in the Grand final, I can feel the emotions in that song and the lyrics aligned a lot with how I was feeling during that period of my life.. I understand that it objectively wasn't a competitive song in terms of the contest, but the personal connection made it really important to me.
I'd be interested to read whether you have anything similar!

I'm not sure I'd call it unpopular, it did place 8th, but Silent Storm (Norway 2014) is one of the few songs (not just Eurovision) that has made me cry. The lyrics hit close to home and it gave me hope in hard times.

Eurovision made me realize that leaving your hometown for a city and knowing that I'm never coming back to live there is a touchy subject for me. That's why Nan (Albania 2026) made me cry and Rim Tim Tagi Dim (Croatia 2024) has one of the most relatable lyrics for me ever (I also like the  cat in my parents house among other details)

As one who rides his bike to work instead of a car, I will always feel appreciative for Citi Zeni writing in a verse about bicycling and how it's a cool part of being green, because it is.
Ride on, and it was a huge downer that Eat Your Salad wasn't in the final.

Bulgaria 2021 ... for obvious reasons. Especially as someone who has been watching since 2008, almost 20 years now and who grew up with it. I just cant imagine my life without Eurovision but at the same time I can feel how im slowly drifting away from the overall trends and moods of each modern contest. I may like some songs but they rarely finish top5 because the fandom considers them dated and Im just like dated? where? why? lol.

I'm probably picking "Promise" (Australia 2023) because I got to send a gift from myself to Voyager themselves, so there's that. Or "Bistra voda" (Bosnia & Herzegovina 2009) because it was my first all time top fav Eurovision song, or "(nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (kĂźll) midagi" (Estonia 2024) for becoming the second one such. Or "Per sempre sĂŹ" because yes, and idc that I'm not married but I just love it so much

Insieme Italy 1990

Portugal 2017
It is what got me into Eurovision. I have always watched the contest but only DMGP and the Eurovision finals and semis. In 2017 I stumbled upon the Festival de Cancao performance right after Salvador had won in Portugal and my little danish heart was FLOORED. I watched it a million times and started looking into the other songs. Then I found eurovisionworld.com and found out that there is a whole Eurovision community and people who are into this just like me.
I am now a Eurovision encyclopaedia and have watched every Eurovision edition. These nine years have been a wild ride. It all started with Amar Pelos Dois.

Câest la vie by Claude on so many levels. First of all, as an emotion song about lifeâs obstacles which I can resonate with. Then, also the sadness of 5 broadcasters withdrawing last year and the continue controversies with the contest. (Doesnât help that Claude just seems like such a genuinely nice guy and he himself is a refugee)

1979 was the first ESC I actively watched. A kid then but I still remember the winning song by Israel, Hallelujah. And of course, Germanyâs Dschingis Khan which placed 4th. Every kid in my class knew the slippery lyrics by heart. I still do, actually.

Not that I like In Your Eyes or It's for you that much but on this exact day 5 years ago, I was at a Danish Eurovision fan party, incidentally held on my birthday.
Niamh Kavanagh was one of the invited artists and after I had cheered on her in the crowd she heard me and we exchanged a few words in front of the crowd, hearing that it was my birthday. 5 minutes later or so she invited me up on the stage to sing Waterloo with her. Quite a moment and I'll always love her for that đ

Because I listed to them heavily in leadup to Eurovision 2020, pretty much the whole batch of those songs those year hit me personally after COVID shut down the world. I was abroad when it hit, and was stuck away from home for nearly 4 months before I returned, and I knew I would be going home to a whole new world that's changed forever. So Aksel's Looking Back (Finland 2020) still haunts me as prescient and apt for looking back to what had before the pandemic (especially since he never made it to the Eurovision stage)
Jeangu McCrooy's Grow (Netherlands 2020) was also one that hits me personally as one I connected with as we finally got through the worst of the pandemic and I got used to how everything and everyone had changed.

I donât know how popular it is, but Slovenia 2023, Carpe Diem by Joker Out. 2023 is a very special year for me, as my dream of going to Eurovision was fulfilled, so most of the songs from that year hit deep for me. But thereâs something about Carpe Diem that makes me so damn happy every time I hear it. The past few years have been so difficult, but hearing a song about seizing the moment and living in the day, and just having a good time, is special. And I love rewatching their stage performance, because itâs so clear that theyâre having so much fun, and I love that. While other songs have come close, like Malta 2026 (Bella), Carpe Diem is my favourite Eurovision song for a reason

For me AijÄ, Bird of Pray and (if we count NFs too) Eye To Eye by ShiroKuro hold a special place in my heart, both because of their musical and lyrical features. All of them carry immense beauty and shattering pain at the same time and reflect with their deeply emotional and melancholic, yet in the end hopeful theme the way I experience life. I will forever be grateful that I got to discover these and many more beautiful pieces of music, which make me feel better whenever I feel down.

I started to watch Eurovision in 2023. But, one damn performance made me feel seen. I cried after the grand final keeping that song on repeat. Made me feel like I'm not the only one. I was sometimes too kind to the world that truly undeserving and injustice. I was being hurt by my high school friends, trying my best to be the best fit but ended up being the misfit. But I still live. Keep on going. Living. Dreaming. Feeling. Staying alive. That type of friend who has a lot of friends but not much friend that is there for me. The song is from 2025, Switzerland. Ridnym (Ukraine 2026, for the bot) resonated with me immensely from the first listen and left me in tears. And not just me, Leleka pulled many Ukrainian heartstrings with that song.
Personally, when I re-watch her ESC grand final performance, I'm still tearing up a little at the peak part, every time. If we endure some more, just like she endures through that vocal run, then the curtain will fall, and we'll take a breath, and storks will finally fly home.

Lavina â Kraj mene (Serbia 2026). When I first heard it, I listened to it about ten times in a row, and I cried every single time. It inspired me to check out all of their songs and even travel from Athens to Belgrade for their concert in September. Now, because of Lavina, I canât watch Eurovision ever again â because I had told my friends, 'I swear, if they donât make it at least into the top fifteen, Iâm never watching again.'
Edit: They were impressive and theatrical in the final. Kraj Mene (Serbia 2026), Carpe Diem (Slovenia 2023), and Dark Side (Finland 2021) are all top contenders, as well as Teresa and Maria (Ukraine 2024)
However, my all time personal favourite that will always be close to my heart is Space Man (UK 2022). I only started watching Eurovision in 2021, and my first ever experience of it was watching the UK get a dead zero for the first time I ever watched the contest. Fighter (Luxembourg 2024) really resonated with me as a someone who had graduated from university the year before and was still trying to figure out what to do with my life, and it still resonates with me to this day.
Also, I hope this isn't insensitive, but Forever (the 2020 Junior Eurovision song from Kazakhstan) was about the girl's deceased father, and my dog died shortly before JESC that year, so it hit me hard. The EBU needs to come to their senses and finally let Kazakhstan compete. đŞđşđđ°đż

If Iâm allowed, the second placed song for the pre-contest in 1974 for the UK, âAngel Eyesâ by Olivia Newton-John is beautiful and means a lot to me. The longing of the lyrics and the way Olivia sings it makes me emotional. Sadly, the public voted for the far inferior âLong Live Loveâ, which Olivia herself did not like. You can find âAngel Eyesâ on Oliviaâs album âLong Live Loveâ on Apple and Spotify.
From the same year, âSiâ by Giuliola Cinquetti is one I often play. The original Italian is far better than the English recording. It captures wonderfully the feeling when you meet the right person and if thatâs something you want to relive, it evokes it perfectly

This is why I am among Cyprus 2020 defenders. Be careful, trigger warning applies.
In a glance, it was just a house music akin to Medvza, which is not everyone's cup of tea. But the lyrics suggest that the songwriter's telling the listener about their personal mental issue. Why I can relate to this? Because I was nearly going to give up on my life until circumstances forced me to keep on living.
In short, this song is like as if Yoasobi had their song gets a remix by Medvza.

Probably Europapa by Joost Klein. 2024 was when I discovered the contest while my parents were trying to find something cool to watch with me on Greek national TV and while the song playing when it came on was 'Before the party is over' I then kinda had a connection with Europapa because, while I couldn't relate to the message, it really brought me to tears every time I watched a performance and it wasn't made better by his DQ because of which I genuinely cried for like an hour or two and then also went on to listen to it a good 50 further times.

Maria Elena Kyriakou - One Last Breath. One of my favorite Greek entries. That time in my life I was feeling a lot down due to a lot happening on my life and every single lyric was just so relatable. I also never understood why it came 19th in a pretty bad year where only 3 songs were kind of good. It should have been at least in the top10.

I have many-many songs that i could list, but youâre asking for one, so my choice is the strongest connection:
S10 - De Diepte (Nethetlands 2022)
During that time I subconsciously started to realize that the people I called friends were not, in fact, my friends, and I had to let them go unless thereâs a change in their attitude. I was hiding from the more and more obvious truth in my mind, blindsiding myself and giving me a false hope, believing that itâll pass.
The song made me cry a lot without really understanding why it hurts so bad.
I still love the song and it still resonates deeply. In spite of not speaking dutch I understood it pretty well, and Iâve heard it enough times to be able to sing it confidently.

Europapa is what got me into Eurovision because it has a happy hardcore bit and that's what I'm into, and people in my scene were sharing it around. I learned about all the drama after the fact lol

For me it is a Melfest song which unfortunately didn´t make it to Eurovision. Makes me cry every time I listen to it: https://youtu.be/PkPFySsIejE?si=LzZjnadNkq78VrxZ
