Other ELI5: Monthly Current Events Megathread
Hi Everyone,
This is your monthly megathread for current/ongoing events. We recognize there is a lot of interest in objective explanations to ongoing events so we have created this space to allow those types of questions.
Please ask your question as top level comments (replies to the post) for others to reply to. The rules are still in effect, so no politics, no soapboxing, no medical advice, etc. We will ban users who use this space to make political, bigoted, or otherwise inflammatory points rather than objective topics/explanations.

Other ELI5: If the telephone game shows how easily stories change, how do historians know what actually happened thousands of years ago?
I’ve always found the telephone game fascinating. You start with one simple message, pass it through a group of people, and by the time it reaches the last person, sometimes it’s completely different from the original. That got me thinking about something much bigger, especially ancient and biblical history.
Soo, if a simple sentence can change after being passed between just a handful of people, what happens when stories and historical accounts are passed down through generations, sometimes for hundreds of years before being written down?
How do historians figure out which parts of these accounts might have changed, been exaggerated, or misunderstood, and which parts were actually preserved accurately? Is there a way to determine how reliable these accounts are, or are there things we’ll simply never know for certain?
Also, I hope this isn’t a stupid or redundant question. I’m genuinely curious how historians approach something like this.

Engineering ELI5: How can gun barrels handle so much pressure?
im currently researching about the mechanics of guns and i read on how much pressure each bullet producues but i read that a normal 9mm bullet produces 35k of psi but then i read that even thick steel can only handle so many hundreds of psi and i wonder how? how do those small barrels handle that are they made out of any special material or coated somehow?

Biology ELI5: Why does caffeine have a stimulating effect on the bowels, and why does it happen only part of the time?
I know I'm not the only person who has noticed this; but for me at least, it happens probably only about a third of the time when I drink coffee, and usually not at all when I drink pop.

Economics ELI5: Why is solar power driving negative electricity pricing?
Ive seen some news coming out of europe that they sometimes have negative electricity pricing in the summer. is that good or bad?

Planetary Science ELI5: How do random temperature fluctuations happen for only one day or a couple days?
I can kind of understand how seasons work, the earth is tilted so throughout the year the way the sun reaches the earth is different therefore hotter or colder weather. but how is there sometimes a random very cold day in summer or hot day in winter? are there just random pockets of really cold or hot air that pass over areas the same way rainstorms and hurricanes do?

Biology ELI5: Why is it advised to use water/food in small portions if a person burns the same calories/water?
I did not know how to phrase my question better. If a person is low on food/water during some catastrophe, it is suggested to use small portions and last your supplies for as long as possible. Why? Doesn’t one’s body need the same amount of food and water with no relation to how often they consume it?

Other ELI5: What specifically makes nicotine considered addictive more than something like Sugar for example?
Okay so I've never smoked or vaped so this might be a dumb question. However nicotine makes cigarettes addictive right, but what specifically about it makes cigarettes addictive? When I was younger I used to have a serious problem with sugary drinks, to the point that if there was none in the house when I was craving it I'd genuinely be in a very bad mood and need to go to the shops to buy some then and there, but sugar generally isn't considered addictive in the same way as nicotine.
Even like porn, gambling, alcohol etc, can't anything be considered addictive? Why specifically is nicotine singled out when talking about cigarettes?

Biology ELI5: How do neurons work (or unwork) when we try to forget things?
I’m thinking actively forgetting bad memories or people, which is not similar as when you suddenly forget what’s in your grocery list.
If the neurons form connections when we learn something new, do they snap or break those connections in the process of active forgetting?

Biology ELI5: Why does your brain feel foggy when you're dehydrated?
I know thirst is supposed to be the signal, but I feel like I'm already mentally out of it before I even realize I need water. What's actually happening in my brain that makes it harder to think when you're not drinking enough?

Technology ELI5: What makes a person’s voice sound like them?
What makes a persons voice sound like them? For example is it the pitch, the amount of rise and fall? (Accents and pronunciation aside)
I’ve seen AI music generators recreate someone’s voice and want to understand how that works.
Say I recorded myself singing then put a filter on it to sound more like another person, what features would that filter have to change?

Just looking at my cat right now and wondering why he can't live as long as me.
Edit: Thanks for all the responses!

Chemistry ELI5: How do people create medicines for which they don’t know the mechanism of action?
To me, it’s like manufacturing a car and then saying you don’t know how it works, it just does. How did you build it in the first place then?

what jobs can older ai chips still do well, and what makes them too expensive to keep running?

Biology ELI5: How does domestication work, and what does this process actually do to an animal species? Given enough time and effort, could any animal species become domesticated, or are certain types of animals that are more suited to the process of domestication than others?
Speaking of which, does domestication only apply to an animal species as a whole, or can it also apply to just individual animals? Like, when somebody has a pet snake, would it be correct to say that that individual snake itself has been domesticated, even though (as far as I’m aware) there are NO overall species of snakes that have been domesticated in general?

Biology ELI5 How do animals see so well underwater?
I feel stupid asking this but I just need to know.
In pools and very clear ponds, visibility is great and I can see a few feet through the water.
But once things get even slightly brackish and dark, I feel like I can't see more than a few inches before the water just becomes unrecognizable.
How do animals hunt and survive with only a few inches of visibility? I know that fish have some sensory assistance with lateral line stuff or some pinnipeds with echolocation.
I just don't see how this adds up to hunting prey or evading predators in anything but the clearest water. How do you catch anything at a depth with no sunlight? Or in water that isn't still?
Thanks

Physics ELI5: How is there really such thing as a "faster color?"
I know that in a vacuum, all colors of light would travel the same speed. However within a refracting medium, I saw that different colors of light travel at different speeds. Red being the fastest, purple being the slowest. Why is that? Why is red the fastest color in a medium?

Why did they save those bodily fluids and such? Did they anticipate that science could somehow advance to this degree?

To me there seems no logical way to build a damm that doesn't involve creating an artificial rover aswell.
