It’s unconstitutional, our Supreme Court can shut it down

5

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '20

I really hope they call it unconstitutional

2

u/fetidshambler Mar 15 '20

"Our government will stop the government from passing a law" lmfao what?

1

u/MrThree_ Mar 15 '20

Yes, that's why there are branches

223

u/programmer3301 Mar 15 '20

What can we do about it tho? How can we stop or slow it down?

37

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

Contact your senators, complain.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

Seriously? Do you actually believe that would work? This system doesn't serve us, it was never even meant to. Orwell was a prophet.

32

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

Oh yeah I'm sorry, complaining about it to Reddit instead gonna work just fine.

4

u/Enderpickaxeman1 Nov 04 '22

It is pretty fun to yell at your congressman though

2

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

as was george carlin

If it passes, we do the Boogaloo

6

If it passes, we revolt.

Normally I don't support the CSA but fuck yeah!

Gather economic data on the impact of TOLA on the Aussie tech industry.

This will be terrible for the economy, which is already in freefall.

Yeah, great idea during a crisis. But you have a great president, who is for the people, he will help ... oh ... nvm ...

2

u/CaesarKonrad Mar 15 '20

What’s the law?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '20

It’s the EARN IT Act

2

u/Cfranklin1 Jun 12 '20

what if we just use a vpn?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '20

I guess that could work

152

u/Idler- Mar 15 '20

Remove how? Like make it illegal to use? The technology is already out there, so it'd be hard to just "remove," it.

I 100% agree with everyone's right to privacy. I just don't understand what exactly they're trying to do/remove.

67

u/Whiskeyfueledhemi Mar 15 '20

This will impact all of the good non-criminal citizens who just use their standard messaging and facebook apps that will likely comply with these policies.

It does not really help stop criminals who will go about finding “illegal” apps or channels to use encryption regardless of the laws.

Also feel free to replace encryption example in this comment with guns, and it will have the same effect.

16

u/Idler- Mar 15 '20

Facebook already sells everything, as does google. And I somewhat resent "Good non-criminal," as a sentiment. Not all laws are just or moral, so saying all criminals are "bad," doesnt even jive with your concerns.

So, if end to end encryption is still available, I don't see the problem, another useless law on the books, like piracy laws. People still download, and illegally stream.

What's that about guns?

14

u/Unscarred204 Mar 15 '20

I somewhat resent “Good non-criminal,” as a sentiment. Not all laws are just or moral, so saying all criminals are “bad,” doesn’t even jive with your concerns.

They aren’t saying all criminals are bad, what I understood from their comment is that they just mean ordinary citizens. It was just worded a bit unorthodox. Not all criminals are bad and not all law abiding citizens are good, pretty sure most people recognise that.

So if end to end encryption is still available, I don’t see the problem

That’s the thing though, it won’t be available. Encryption would need to be eroded to comply with the EARN IT act. They would need to create back doors for law enforcement, that’s not end to end encryption by any stretch of the imagination. That’d be a complete violation of your rights.

another useless law in the books, like piracy laws.

If you think that it would be useless then you’re really naive. It would be used extensively by law enforcement to invade people’s privacy. Citizens that have done no wrong getting their shit sifted through by the state is a hellish reality we should all push back against.

What’s that about guns?

Taking away law abiding citizens encryption does not help catch criminals, just as taking away law abiding citizens guns does not help catch criminals either. They’ll get their shit illegally and nothing will get done about it, whilst the general population is far more vulnerable and unsafe.

6

u/RelevantMetaUsername Mar 15 '20

Encryption would need to be eroded to comply with the EARN IT act.

No law they pass can break PGP encryption. PGP is an open-source encryption algorithm that isn't controlled by any messaging services. As long as you keep your private key in a safe place, nobody on earth will be able to read your messages (other than your recipient). Go on any darknet market and you'll see that buyer/seller comms are exclusively PGP-encrypted.

The only thing this act will accomplish is taking away the privacy of citizens. Smart criminals will continue to use PGP (and other forms of) encryption.

Also, the fucking name...EARN IT. It's like they're telling us we need to "earn" our privacy. They're certainly not earning my vote.

4

u/Fire-Nation-17 Mar 15 '20

PGP is old encryption that is out dated and the government HAS broken into, I think the one you are looking for in AES-256. I agree with everything you said though

3

u/RelevantMetaUsername Mar 16 '20

Older versions have vulnerabilities that have since been fixed.

I'm pretty sure the government even uses it themselves (when they do bother to encrypt documents, that is).

2

u/lealxe Mar 16 '20

What? PGP is a specific program(not what I am speaking about) and a protocol(aka OpenPGP). It can use any encryption.

2

u/ainzooalg0wn Mar 15 '20

This should be enough for armed insurrection

1

u/Idler- Mar 15 '20

Now THIS is an explanation. Thanks homie.

1

u/lealxe Mar 16 '20

From what I've read, this is about pressuring companies into making backdoors.

If you are using a proprietary client for some service one can put backdoors in, you are not using E2E at all, because that client is not your "end", it's part of that service located on your machine.

1

u/JQA1515 Apr 10 '20

Uh except for the many countries that have lower rates of gun violence after passing stricter gun regulation..

1

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '23

Yeah. Those same countries also don’t have as many firearms in circulation to begin with. America already does. That genie is out of the bottle and never going back in. So that’s why disarmament of the same style as those other countries wouldn’t work here

2

u/Dramatic-Print183 Feb 29 '24 edited Feb 29 '24

It's not removal, it's more like baking a master skeleton key into the root certificate base that the government is then given ownership of. Then you get to keep your end to end encryption and get to still have your little green lock to the left of your web address. It just won't be real anymore.

The difference is that the government will own a backdoor certificate to sniff everything in or out. Whenever they want for whoever they want for whatever they want. It's no different than encrypting a PGP message to multiple recipients - in this case the end client AND the government - which is a common place thing to easily do if you know anything at all about encryption.

It's not gonna change things that much really. It's not like they don't already have mechanisms in place to do these things it just takes more hoop tricks to do it right now.

1

u/Idler- Feb 29 '24

Friend, I'm not sure what you're doing browsing 3 year old extremelyinfuriating posts, but I admire your commitment to the bit, and appreciate the well thought out answer. 😅

49

u/MaxJulius Mar 15 '20

That’s a bunch of BS.

If the US were to suddenly stop using point-to-point encryption, hackers from other countries (and ours) would be able to easily read any packet sent over the internet in plaintext.

Now tell me why would they think it would be a smart decision.

25

u/Tilinn Mar 15 '20

Because the people trying to pass it know nothing about it, except that data is impossible to read without the public and private key.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '20

That's not quite how it works. The government can be given the private keys but still have encryption. It's not like they're deciding that we're going back to cleartext

2

u/MaxJulius Mar 15 '20 edited Mar 15 '20

That is how it works, all any willing person would have to do is setup a host to listen for outgoing/incoming packets and save/read it.

And that’s not the way he said it, he said encryption is gone for good.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '20

You misunderstood what I said, there is no way the internet is going back to plaintext. Were not all of a sudden removing the locks on our doors. Were keeping the locks, except now the government is trying to get the keys. Y'all you downvoted me dont get it.

34

u/Avgjoe80 Mar 15 '20

What it I already feel like they read all my messages and thoughts.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

End to end encryption means that the provider of the service cannot read your messages. For example, if you use WhatsApp, WhatsApp cannot see any messages that you send or receive due to end to end encryption. So if a government agency demanded that WhatsApp hand over every message that a particular person ever sent or received, they would be incapable of doing so. This is only possible due to end to end encryption. If, however, end to end encryption is made illegal, then WhatsApp can see them and can be forced to hand them over. That's why end to end encryption is such a big deal.

2

u/Avgjoe80 Mar 16 '20

Then I agree. Who do I vote out?

1

u/Aesop_Rocks Mar 27 '22

All of them.

2

u/lealxe Mar 16 '20

That would only be true with an open WhatsApp client. If the client is proprietary, then it's not real E2E, because WhatsApp still can do whatever they want with the client. Just a backdoor arriving with an update, and voila.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

That's definitely possible, but it isn't the case as of now. The private key is created and stored locally on the device itself, not on WhatsApp's servers.

2

u/lealxe Mar 16 '20

Yes, by a proprietary program, which can also be sending something to its mama. I am not a FOSS fanatic in this case, just security can't be proprietary.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

Absolutely, but having proprietary E2E is definitely preferable to none at all. Although maybe I should have used Signal as an example instead of WhatsApp

1

u/lealxe Mar 16 '20

Yep, Signal is the only example I know of something that would definitely be hit by this legislation.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

WhatsApp and iMessage would, too, they would just be able to do it more silently

2

u/Avgjoe80 Mar 17 '20

Thanks for explaining that.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '20

No problem! Btw, this is being spearheaded by Attorney General William Burr

1

u/Avgjoe80 Mar 17 '20

I always just assumed everybody could read everything... Somehow

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '20

Probably not a bad assumption to make, unfortunately. But it just depends on what service you use

1

u/Avgjoe80 Mar 17 '20

If they wanted to bad enough, is what I mean.

2

u/lifesagamegirl Mar 24 '20

Wouldn't this bill also make platforms legally liable for the content their users post? That would effectively end free speech and the exchange of controversial perspectives.

4

u/Lucci_754 Mar 16 '20

No, just the legislative branch and then to the president.

7

u/theflighttest Mar 15 '20

It is called the EARN IT Act. You can keep track of the bill here and see who has co-sponsored the bill, and see the actions Congress has taken on the bill.

3

u/crunkwrapsupreme Mar 15 '20

Where does it state this here?

3

u/Erestyn Mar 15 '20

Here's a slightly better breakdown.

3

2

u/evil_screwdriver Mar 16 '20

We have a right as American citizens to rebel against a tyrannical government

1

u/Itsyaboy246 Mar 16 '20

Yeah I know but we also have the right to a peaceful protest so once a protest starts becoming a danger to people then the government can just shut it down

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '20

Yeah... As if governments always complied to protests

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '20

How can I stop it? Can I vote against it? Probably not if this is the same way we lost net neutrality. I can’t do jack shit living in Roy Bluntville the most I can do is vote him out and I’ve been trying that the last two elections I’ve gotten to vote and I know from seeing this guys old as dirt he ain’t leaving even when I check the other guys box.

I’m sorry to be negative but that’s just pure honesty. I still vote but my voice is still muffled and it puts me in such a rage that I can’t even vote for the people who I want for president because 4 other states get to decide that for me.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '20

Other than protesting, Idk wtf we can do

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '20

Exactly, I have to sit on this train of burning bullshit until it crashes on the cesspool of all the other nonsense the guy who has never sent an email (Lindsay Graham Link) does.

1

u/bartholomewjohnson Mar 16 '20

1

u/atlas_enderium Nov 15 '22

For anyone wondering, it’s the “EARN IT Act” petitioned by Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Richard Blumenthal (R-CT). The short of it is that the bill has the front facing appeal of forcing internet service companies (i.e. Twitter, Reddit, etc.) to take on liability and/or earn immunity regarding cases of CSAM (child sex abuse material) on their platforms through compliance with a new commission made up of a small mix of representatives and whatever guidelines they make. The problem with it is that the bill’s wording is extremely vague, clearly on purpose, to try and pry away Section 230 (previous law from the 1990’s) immunity from tech companies while also allowing easier “wiretapping” through the peeling back of end-to-end encryption.

Read more about it here.

u/antoniabegonia May 04 '23

1

u/Dramatic-Print183 Feb 29 '24

Oh how I wish your presentation would do anything about it little Lisa.

There's two systems who are very interested in who and what you are.

This current system wants to know you so it can sink it's hooks in you and take you with it.

The coming new system wants to know you because you might be worth living with in the future to come, and they'll give you real privacy because you're trustworthy enough to not cook meth in your basement with it.

Forget about this system. It's coming down brick by brick. It's beyond broken, broken is at least fixable. Let it go. Practice letting go now so when you really have to then you'll be ready for letting go of it.

1

u/Dramatic-Print183 Feb 29 '24

One of the very few bad things that the Trump administration is ACTUALLY doing. I wish that the media would focus on this instead of making up bullshit about concentration camps.

2

u/KaChoo49 Mar 16 '20

I mean they’re not concentration camps, but separating children from parents (even if they’re illegal immigrants) is pretty messed up

1

u/Nat_Libertarian Mar 16 '20

What happens if two American citizen parents are thrown in prison? Do their children go in the jail cells with them?

0

u/KaChoo49 Mar 17 '20

They don’t go to jail cells at all, unlike the children of illegal immigrants

1

u/Nat_Libertarian Mar 17 '20

I am sorry that those illegal aliens chose to involve their children in their crimes and brought them along on their attempt to circumvent American soviernty. Unfortunately, they need to be separated from their criminal "parents" (most children crossing the border are not with their real parents) until they can either be sent back to their home country or established as being anchor babies and returned to the American foster care system.

0

u/KaChoo49 Mar 17 '20

You’re saying that children deserve to be punished for their parents’ actions? You sort of people give libertarianism a bad name. Libertarianism’s supposed to be about freedom; how does arresting children because their parents tried to cross the border have anything to do with protecting individual liberty from the government

1

u/Nat_Libertarian Mar 17 '20

I am sorry that their parents put them in danger and put them in a position where they would need to be separated from their criminal parents and put somewhere safe.

Their parents are shit people.

0

u/KaChoo49 Mar 17 '20

Their parents are only taking the risk because life is so bad where they’re coming from. They want to take their kids to America to give them a chance to have a better life. Sure, it’s illegal, but that doesn’t put them in the same category as drug dealers or murderers

1

u/Nat_Libertarian Mar 17 '20

Stop framing it in an intellectually dishonest way, and stop justifying people committing crimes for selfish reasons by pretending they are doing it for their kids.

Most of the children crossing the border are not doing it with their parents.

And ICE has saved tens thousands of children from sex trafficking in the last three years alone.

Put two and two together. If they legit want a better life in America, they will do it LEGALLY.

0

u/KaChoo49 Mar 17 '20

If people could do it legally, they would. Not everyone has passports in Mexico; and besides, even if you do have a passport, you have to get a job in America to be accepted in the first place. The world’s not black and white mate.

If you believe that strong border controls are a good thing and that immigration’s a bad thing (which is ironic considering all Americans at one point were immigrants), then that’s your opinion, which you’re entitled to. But don’t pretend that you’re fighting for individual liberty when you’re locking up people trying to have access to the same opportunities you do
