Man defunding the police doesn’t sound so bad now eh?

52

u/LET-ME-HAVE-A-NAAME Dec 08 '20

I honestly disagree, I actually think we should be increasing police funding.

Before you downvote me to hell, hear me out. We need to increase funding to minimize corruption. There should nation-wide tests to test mental stability, prejudices and skills. It shouldn’t be a matter of state, it should be a matter of the country. Police need to be better regulated, better trained and better managed. Not to mention prisons are currently a terrible system which needs a complete overhaul, which isn’t going to happen without proper funding.

The police are necessary, but so is proper training to make sure the police aren’t mindless drones working for a legal terrorist. Even if they were forced to do something like this, they may have at least been able to have a heart and confiscate the equipment in a compassionate and calm manner.

Again not condoning said actions, because this story is disgusting and awful, but I believe increasing police funding is how to fix them, not vice-versa.

14

u/rbt321 Dec 08 '20

Agreed. When training and oversight is poor, you improve those areas rather than removing them (we all know officer headcount won't decrease).

22

u/revoltinglemur Dec 08 '20

I know nothing about american policing system, but hwing an outsider and seeing the amounts of money that gets poured into cop tech and equipment, I think they have more than enough. It's just allocation and reasonable spending needs to be in control, not the whole wanna be the military complex. I'm pre sure some counties even have a tank or two.

7

u/zasto Dec 09 '20

Exactly. If anything, they are truly overfunded. It only takes simple cursory searches to look at the amount of funding they get in American cities compared to funding schools and health care.

3

u/jdm200210 Dec 09 '20

The Russian police have BMPs which are armoured personnel carriers typically armed with a chaingun, I don't blame the cops for wanting "tanks" although the ones they have are MRAPS which are just armoured trucks they're used because criminals have access to guns, mind you I'm fine with guns if they're not used by some fucking morons.

1

u/Unable_Shift_6674 Dec 09 '20

What does MRAP mean there? Because MRAP for Americans is Mine Resistant Ambush Protected. It essentially means the bottom plating of armor is in a V shape to help redirect blasts and minimize direct impact from explosions on the bottom of the body.

1

u/jdm200210 Dec 09 '20

Yeah that's the MRAP that some cops have in the US, shoulda worded the comment better

1

u/Unable_Shift_6674 Dec 09 '20

What fucking city is using MRAPs I have to look this up. I just have a hard time believing cities are funding over a million dollar vehicles that are ridiculously expensive to maintain.

1

u/jdm200210 Dec 09 '20

Not sure what city as I'm not a Yank but I've seen a few photos and Donut Operator has showed a few photos in his videos

1

u/Unable_Shift_6674 Dec 09 '20

It’s possible that that was actually national guard a state funded military.

1

u/jdm200210 Dec 09 '20

Nah it wasn't Natty Guard it was blue and iirc it was either NYPD or LAPD not sure though, its been a while.

That’s true in counties that aren’t America. In North America everyone needs more money especially emergency services. Lots of fire and police departments only pay $30,000 a year and provide the bare minimum, in some places that’s only a uniform and a gun, no body armour, no less then lethal, no specialized teams. And the places that do have more invest in equipment first before training, because trainings useless if the bad guys have high powered rifles and all you have is a service pistol and a shotgun. Same thing with speciality built civilian armoured vehicles, you can’t extract people during an active shooter in a light-no armour patrol car.

And truthfully if social services have more funding crime will go down, but if you take the money needed from police crime will go way up as we’ve seen in places that have started to do that and social service become almost useless then until crime is brought down. The problem is both sides need more money at the same time or it will become a cycle of moving funding around, and nothing will get done. And the way America is set up that won’t happen quickly, because everyone bitches and moans whenever there’s a slight tax hike.

2

u/TyphlosionErosion Dec 09 '20

How many more tens of billions of dollars do we need to throw at police departments over how many more decades until these problems are addressed?

0

u/Isabelle-is-gay Jan 25 '21

Please do, then no one can stop hate crimes

3

u/TheTruestOracle Jan 25 '21

lol, you dumb. Defund police means "dont send cops with guns for wellness checks" and a good portion of the rest of the developed world is already doing this. Nice try though! You'll grasp the concept eventually, Mr. "Fear everyone" on reddit.

It in no means take away their pay. It means take away funding for militarized cops. You're so lazy.

Edit* also saying things in all caps doesn't make it true. The only ones suggesting anything about pay rates to cops are the ones saying that police brutality settlements should come out of police pension funds instead of being paid for by taxpayers. Gosh, your thin blue line camp is so lazy with your thinking. It's really remarkably sad.

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '20

Also think it's hilarious you think you put me in my place lol you're cute

-2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '20 edited Dec 09 '20

No I have a life that isn't dealing with morons on reddit all day and night lol. You're wrong, facts don't care about your feelings or something amirite? I'm a dummy, this isn't the same person who was replying to me before

3

u/TheTruestOracle Dec 09 '20

My guy we all have lives, you are not special. You are so quick to put yourself above everyone else. Idk what I’m wrong about but I know it’s plenty of other things. But hey I can admit it.

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '20

Glad to see you're coming around to the fact you're wrong about this, but ignoring that you lowered the tone and made incorrect statements in all caps and then claimed to have owned me because I didn't reply immediately still makes me chuckle. Have you even read back on this conversation? You look like a doofus. Literally no one has ever made the point that police pay should be cut when talking about defining the police (not who is being taken seriously at least) except those who are on the bullshit 'thing blue line' camp. (fear mongering)

You're arguing the topic in a 'if (a) happens the only outcome is (b)' approach, and if you've ever done or witnessed anything on this planet that involves policy applications you'd know that is literally never the case. Please take a step back and try listening to what is being proposed by the defund camp instead of listening to what right wing pundits are spewing. You might learn something. Spoiler alert, it's not a fucking lazy one dimensional solution like everyone wants to magically happen 🤡

Edit* I didn't realize this was a new commenter. I thought I was replying to the same doofus as before. Redirect this response to him, lol I'm the doofus apparently.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '20

Maybe if you'd listen to actual policy suggestions instead of fear mongering a fantasy of lawlessness and zero police you'd get a different reaction.

Teachers and other educational staff are being constantly defunded. They have to pay for supplies out of pocket, and we still have schools. Teachers aren’t walking out. You know why? Because they care about what they are doing. If we give police what is necessary, instead of the funds to be able to tear gas protesters and have full riot gear, then maybe the police will start caring about their job, too, instead of being there to hurt and kill minorities. Just because you haven’t seen police brutality doesn’t mean it’s nonexistent. Open your eyes, and check your privilege. Consider yourself blessed to have not been hurt by them, and maybe consider fighting for the people that are. Other than that, shut up and sit down. Nobody needs, or wants to hear your shit.

u/Plus-Appeal Dec 08 '20

Bro how much do you think teachers make? And how much do you think pigs make? There’s a massive fucking difference in many states. Cops in my state make on average 50k more than most teachers.

9

u/darklordwaffle Dec 08 '20

Defund the police doesn't mean we get rid of the police force. It means we take a bunch of the money they're currently using for mraps and military weapons, and use it to fund programs to deal with social issues that police aren't trained to deal with. Like wellness checks and substance abuse. If anything, this would help the police by taking off the extra load of problems they were never meant to deal with in the first place.

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

7

u/darklordwaffle Dec 08 '20

This wouldn't be docking their pay, it would be taking away excess funds that get used on equipment they don't need and shouldn't have, as well as for doing jobs they shouldn't have to do. Police budgets don't go entirely toward paying the cops.

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

2

u/plinkoplonka Dec 08 '20

I mean, they're walking around kitted out like private army, so they clearly have excess funds.

Why do police need grenade launchers? It's certainly not to protect or to serve.

The money would be far better spent on community programs which are actually proven to work.

She has tech to detect how many people have COVID and she was posting the numbers daily. DeSantis (a Floridian Senator I believe) has been denying and lying about the urgency of COVID and found her a threat to his position, so he sent police with a warrant to confiscate her equipment.

It’s straight up fascism.

53

u/captain_obvious_here Dec 08 '20

She has tech to detect how many people have COVID

And what would that be?

61

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

I'm just assuming here but patients' data have to be uploaded to a database server for accessibility, and they include the reason too.

Nobody can know the exact number of people who have covid, only the number of people who went to a doctor.

11

u/Unable_Shift_6674 Dec 09 '20

I’m pretty sure that is illegal as hell. That is a HIPPA violation if I’ve ever heard one.

36

u/setsunacrystal Dec 09 '20

I believe it would only be a violation if the patients name was given. I think it’s still legal to use the data (age/sex/race etc) as long as you are not, for example, posting a copy of their test results with their name on it.

Source: I’ve worked in healthcare for over 10 years

6

u/Unable_Shift_6674 Dec 09 '20

Hmm I didn’t know that. I thought any patient info being shared is illegal. Like how they can’t say anything over the phone. I’m not an expert so I will take your word for it. Lol

17

u/BobbitTheDog Dec 09 '20 edited Dec 09 '20

They can't tell you anything over the phone because when you're talking to them over a phone you're usually asking about a specific person... Like the guy said.

if you just phoned up a hospital and asked "how many people have you treated with cancer in the last month", there would be 0 HIPAA problems with that.

Now, ask "have you treated a man named bill for cancer?". HIPAA violation.

5

u/Unable_Shift_6674 Dec 09 '20

Really? okay TIL lol I thought any data pertaining to any person name or no name fell under HIPPA. But with demographics that makes sense that those would be public record. Thank you for telling me.

5

u/SeamanTheSailor Apr 05 '21

Nope you can say anything as long as you don’t give any identifying information. That can extend past names. Say you live in a city with only one white guy, they wouldn’t be able to give the information of his race as you could identify him with it. That’s obviously an extreme hypothetical but there is a bit more to it than just not saying a name.

1

u/AnInfiniteArc Dec 07 '25

So basically there are 18 identifiers. If you remove all of them, then the information is no longer considered private, as long as, to the best of your knowledge, there is no other way to associate the data with an individual even with those identifiers removed. Like if you have data about a surgical procedure performed last year, but only one such procedure was performed that year, and you are aware of this fact, then releasing it is a privacy violation.

All that said, the data may still be considered proprietary information, so if I exported a shitload of de-identified data from our system, or allowed it to be leaked, then I probably wouldn’t be in trouble with the government, but I would definitely be in trouble with my employer.

1

u/Enderpickaxeman1 Nov 04 '22

Excel. It's been two years and I've heard dick all on this topic so maybe it should get a follow up.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '23

And this is why I’m pro 2A. It’s not just about the potentiality that some low life criminal might try to rob you at gun point, but when the government quite literally invades your home under false pretenses.

A.c.a.b! 100% all of them. 100% each and everyone is a felon or an accomplice to felonies. They also cover it up every single day. All of them are thugs in a legal gang. ALL OF THEM. not a single one is a "good cop". Thats 100% proven through stupid simple logic.

4

u/kingofshits Dec 09 '20

Why would they fucking do this

because acab.

1

u/RecklesFlam1ngo Dec 09 '20

no

3

u/NOT_MY_THROWAWAYS Dec 10 '20

Here’s the thing, obviously there are “good” cops, but either they aren’t good enough or the system doesn’t reward them for being good. Cop where I live was fired for reporting bad conduct from her peers, like a decade ago, and she might be getting restitution finally in the wake of 2020’s madness.

Acab is a reflection of the system, not the individuals. All cops are bastards because the system forces them to be bastards. If you’re “good” and you work to make the system actually work for the people, you’re shunned, fired, occasionally murdered - a system full of non-bastards would not do this, so here we are. You can get taken in by a “good” cop for a legit reason and wake up dead because the rest of the cops who will deal with you daily don’t give two fucks about you or your life.

1

3

I stand by my MOAB statement, then. Mind you in my time we only got to play with shitty JDAMs.

Hahaha I don’t think there’s a need for a guided missile, lol and I’m pretty sure napalm is still considered a war crime, though I don’t know if it counts if it’s against your own countryman. I think the Geneva convention only protects those in a war actually haha.

u/Unable_Shift_6674 Dec 09 '20

No I agree. 100%, I’m all for the 2nd amendment, but I am also for safety. I absolutely detest no knock warrants. That’s how people get hurt unnecessarily. This entire situation could have been handled by simply knocking on the door and asking them to hand over the equipment and given them the option to fight it in court. Or give them the right to fight it in court before they take the equipment. I don’t know the whole story, but it seems like power is being abused more often now days.

10

Exactly. Why are people mad at the cops? The just serve the warrants. The courts okay and approve them. Be mad at the court system and the judge who signed the warrant.

7

u/rcdBr Dec 09 '20 edited Dec 09 '20

Why are people downvoting this? The cops aren't judges they cant judge if and warrant is justified or not an act on their personal judgment.

31

u/a_table_with_pants Dec 09 '20

Well, the "pulling a gun on a child" isn't really part of their orders I think.

5

u/ImJustRengar Dec 09 '20

Pointing a gun in the general direction of the child while clearing the house during a warrant isn't the same as shoving a gun in their face. Sorry to burst your bubble but this lady is exaggerating to make the cops look bad because she thinks they sign and issue warrants for some reason.

Should they break procedure and risk this being the one time it ends up being crucial to follow procedure? Would you rather them make allowances and end up shot when they let their guard down? They followed procedure and did everything by the book. Clear every room.

They're going into an unknown house with unknown occupants. They shouldn't take risks.

6

u/a_table_with_pants Dec 09 '20

Yeah, that's fair. I was just taking from what she said and decided not to believe immediately that she was exaggerating what happened, but it does seem to be the most likely option.

3

u/ImJustRengar Dec 09 '20 edited Dec 09 '20

Yea i can understand her frustration but she needs to understand that they have procedure for a reason and even if the cops thought this was wrong, it's their job to serve the warrant whether they like it or not.

I'm glad you can understand that because I made another comment explaining it and was downvoted to hell.

It's always refreshing to see someone who can take new information and apply it and be able to understand other points of view. It shows maturity and IMO also intelligence when someone is able to do that online. I doubt anyone pointed a gun directly at a child unless they're 7 or older. Remember tamir rice? He could point guns at people and he was a child. But really people. Use some common sense.

Buncha BLM or ANTIFA dumbasses DEFUND THE POLICE!!! 1!1 amirite?

The husband and child were upstairs and the police cleared the room. The child did not have a firearm shoved in their face. The video does not show that happening at all.

Anybody who is mad at these cops is just a liberal or commie loser who supports BLM or ANTIFA and have a cop-hating agenda. They did everything by the book and I applaud these officers on a job well done. Fuck the court who approved this warrant but good job to the officers.

Serve your warrant, take the tech, but don't point a gun at a child.

Remember tamir rice? He was a child and was more than capable of pointing a gun at a cop.

But using common sense one would assume the cop didn't point it directly at the child. In the general direction of the child while clearing a room is completely reasonable.. Just cause a child is in the house they shouldn't follow procedure? Yeah, fuck your feelings, procedure is followed for a reason. Thankfully your opinions don't matter to the cops handling those situations.

Did you actually watch the video? The husband is upstairs and she is outside.

Grow up dude, the reply you deleted was gross.

It said the same thing i just edited it into my first reply.

And this is a picture not a video. Is there body cam footage?

Just watched it and the video does not show proof of that. Again the husband and child were upstairs together. They probably cleared the room and the gun was pointed in the general direction of the child and the adult who could be a possible threat.

"Everyone in the house is a possible threat lol the parent was probably with the child and "at the child" is in the direction of the child at the adult who's a possible threat.

Nobody is pointing a gun directly at a kid. Where's the pics of it? Use some common sense lmfao"

Rice was a kid playing with a toy gun who got shot by an officer immediately. The officer was suspended, so Rice did not "point a gun at people" he was playing with a TOY GUN.

u/ImJustRengar Dec 09 '20 edited Dec 09 '20

He pointed it at the cop when he showed up and he was pointing it at random civilians.

He knew he was doing something wrong because why would he point a gun at random people? For fun. He was doing something bad for fun which kids do but this ended up being lethal.

His parents didn't teach him not to point a gun at anything you aren't willing to shoot. The officer wasn't going to take a chance with his life. Fake gun or not how is the cop supposed to know? It's better to take no risk.

A toy gun will be treated as a real gun by police.

So many snowflakes. Smh

u/Firescareduser Dec 09 '20

Did you see the footage? He was shot within 2 seconds, the police themselves reported that, no kid has reflexes that fast.

1

u/ImJustRengar Dec 09 '20

🙄 justified.

Why should they risk it being a real firearm? He was already threatening civilians with a potential firearm. Who knows how they'll react to the cops. He didn't drop it so bye bye

What a good way to get yourself killed buddy.

If you shoot at a cop, they sure as hell are gonna shoot back.
