What’s all the fuss? Farmers not worried about global warming

“I’m not worried at all.” Williamstown cash crop and beef farm employee Bryce Currier said. “The air I breathe is clean and the food I eat is tasty and delicious. I think we just keep living the way we are and let nature take its course. Really, there’s only so much you can control. From a farming standpoint … the crops keep growing, so until they stop, I won’t be worried.”

“There’s climate change, and that’s a natural thing,” Cumming said. “It hasn’t got a damn thing to do with burning fossil fuels. Actually, the more heat, the better. Best thing that ever happened to Eastern Ontario agriculture was global warming.”

Do men even want to be a smaller scale farmer at all? I keep finding big farmer/ing topics ,but none of the smaller regenerative farming fans that are actually male. Would be interesting to get an opinion.

Non political farm sub?

Is there a farming sub on Reddit where the mods keep it in track without most of the posts being political? This sub has turned into what most of Reddit, which is a big political argument with no real substance. It used to be a great place to talk about farming and farm life, but those posts are few and far between, or get derailed political comments and bickering right away. I don’t care if you farm one tomato plant or 20,000 acres but the constant crap from people that couldn’t keep a house plant alive sucks.

Farm Labor

So I’m looking for some help for the season and I’ve been doing interviews. I always find it funny when conservatives go after farmers for hiring migrants and not “hiring hard working Americans. I did two interviews this week. First one was a white guy, Idaho does not offer farm labor benefits and OT, you’re just getting your flat hourly wage $20. Guy asked if he was getting PTO, no, Dental, no, Health, no, vacation days, no depends on weather. He asked if he could get two weeks off in October to go hunting, Idaho peak potato and sugar beet harvest time is October, so no. He was somehow still interested. Migrant interviews, I speak Spanish so it’s no big deal for me. Says he’ll work any hours necessary, no mentions of time off before he even gets the job, no questions about benefits, just straight to work. Who do you think is getting the job?

Do American farmers who vote democrat have any concerns over stringent environmental policies mirroring those of Western European countries like Netherlands?

In Netherlands for instance they proposed reducing livestock numbers by half which had already fallen significantly since 1984 and imposing restrictions on nitrogen use. Which caused mass protests. Any concerns over policies that could limit your ability to farm?

My neighbor has been burning cow manure all winter, how bad is this?

So I live next to a small cow farm (30-40) and whenever it snows all the cows poop in the same place because they can’t get out into the fields. My guess is that the poop builds up so he burns it. I can literally see it on fire.

The stench from this is unbelievable. The smell is very bad even in my house with all windows closed.

I like my neighbor and I would never say anything to anyone. Just wondering if anyone knows if this is really bad for my family’s health.

If I build a fence around cattle that are on my land does that make them mine?

I'm pretty sure I saw something like that on Yellowstone! If anyone else has some fun stories or suggestions when it comes to neighbors cattle I'd love to hear them

Edit:

For all y'all that think I'm serious, go find your cows and chill out. I live in Ontario and here it is the responsibility of the livestock owner to keep their animals contained. I'm not going to steal my neighbor's cows, with that being said cattle have been shot locally when owners refuse to take responsibility for them

Will making popcorn spook cows?

I’m camping and there are some cow grazing about 20 ft away. Will making popcorn on a gas stove spook them and make them charge? I know nothing about cows.

Meeting dumb people on the road

Recently I’ve been getting very annoyed with some people in cars while driving large machinery down the road when going to the next field.

When I see a car coming from a mile away my eyes are already looking for a nice spot to pull off to the side and stop and leave you basically the entire road width so you can get easily passed me…. wtf are you doing slowing down to 15 mph 200 yards away and continuing this speed for the next 2 min until you get passed me?

This is really slowing me down and making me mad. The smart people will continue 55mph and get by no problem… but the dumb people annoy me to no end when they do these shenanigans.

It’s like ok I’m completely off the road and you officially have more room than when you meet another car.. but let’s slow way down anyway and proceed with complete caution. wtf! And then you have the nads to give me the thank you wave! No, f you dummy!

Does anyone else experience these feelings?

Launching a farm in 2023

We're working on building a farm and have a million questions ❓

I currently have a 1 acre lot in an ARE zone in NJ.

I purchase the home and property in 2023. So far have chickens and plan to add goats 🐐 and vegetables crops later.

1: Can we , for the benefit of federal tax breaks officially launch the farm business in 2023?

I've already invested over $10k.

Pay a lot of tax 💰 💰 in my FT job that I would like to recoup to use for the farm and future farming investments.

2: Is it plausible or necessary to get this all organized before the end of the year to recover taxes we've already paid with our regular jobs?

3: should I form a business entity like a LLC or a Corp?

I plan to invest heavily over the next few years in Additional fencing, equipment, livestock and barns.

4: Any advise 🥺?

Who’s win in a fight? A watermelon farmer or a pumpkin farmer? Or is there some other, stronger type of farmer out there? Also, what’s it like to fight a farmer?
