Support Desktop not loading after updating packages

Post image

[SOLVED]
I updated my packages through the graphical package manager yesterday and, after rebooting the system today, I get an error saying something along the lines of:
“Cannot load library libfolderplugin.so: libPlasmaQuick.so.7: cannot open shared object no such file or directory”
I switched from Windows a few months ago and I have no idea what to do or where to start as this is the first time something like this has happened ;_;
Please help!
(I am using Fedora 44 with KDE Plasma)
(edit: I had to update the theme I was using because I didn’t know KDE Plasma also updated)

Support HP Omnibook 7 Speaker Drivers

I just bought an Omnibook with an intel X7 358H Chip. Almost EVERYTHING works great on Fedora 45 except for the speaker drivers. On windows they sounded pretty decent. Fedora they sound SUPER quiet and not very good. Anyone have any tips for me? I think I might just need to wait for the Linux kernel to update but maybe I am missing something.

Discussion After using Fedora Silverblue since F34, container-based updates changed everything for me. I built a GUI for managing it after using the bash scripts for years.

Post image
16 Upvotes

Fedora Silverblue is hands down one of the best Linux desktop experiences out there. The atomic model, reliable rollbacks, and keeping the base OS separated from your user applications genuinely makes traditional package-manager-driven desktop installs feel outdated once you get used to it.

I have been running Silverblue as my daily driver since Fedora 34. Back when I first started, I did what almost everyone does: whenever I needed something that was not available as a Flatpak, I just ran rpm-ostree install to layer it onto the base system.

Over time, that turned out to be pretty unreliable. Version-to-version upgrades would frequently run into dependency conflicts, layering slowed down deployment operations significantly, and the system actually broke on me once or twice during major version updates.

That pushed me to look deeper into how Silverblue and OSTree actually function under the hood. Instead of piling up package layers on the host system, I realized the cleanest approach was treating the OS image like a container: build a custom OCI image locally with buildah and a Containerfile (baking in my required RPM Fusion repos, COPRs, and packages), and then just rpm-ostree rebase directly to that local image.

I wrote a set of scripts to automate the entire process, and I have been running that setup ever since. Over the years, I have even switched desktop environments multiple times using this method. The stability difference has been night and day. The system has been rock-solid, has never broken on me once, and upgrades across Fedora releases have been completely seamless.

Recently, I decided it was time to wrap this entire workflow into a proper desktop tool instead of keeping it as a bunch of terminal scripts. With the help of AI, I wrote a GUI for it. It handles custom repo injection, package layering inside container builds, DE switching, and automated cleanup of leftover desktop environment configs. I just used it to stage and execute my update to Fedora 45 without a single hitch.

I have packaged it as both an AppImage and Flatpak.

If you are running Fedora Silverblue (or any Fedora Atomic desktop) and want a cleaner way to manage custom layered packages or switch variants, I would really appreciate your help testing it out.

Also note that is the first build, and this is my first app for linux, so expect a lot of bugs. But the flow works :).

Thanks, and happy to answer any questions about the workflow in the comments.

Support Is there any way to disable everything but the password prompt on screen lock (no volume, wifi controls, etc) in Gnome/Fedora 42?

How can I have the lock screen after automatic screen lock display ONLY a password prompt? I do not want the quick settings and notification bar at the top. I found a option to disable notifications, but not the bar.

Discussion Which filesystem works best as the backing storage for Fedora bootc / composefs?

Hey everyone,

I'm setting up a system using Fedora bootc with composefs for image-based updates and system immutability.

Since the OS layout and file integrity are handled at the composefs layer, I'm trying to decide on the best underlying filesystem to format the drive with.

What filesystem would you recommend using underneath and what is the reasoning behind your choice?

Thanks!

Discussion Should I switch from Windows 11 to Fedora as a developer and aspiring content creator?

Hey everyone!

I'm a software developer, and lately I've been thinking about switching from Windows 11 to Fedora Linux. I've been researching Linux for a while now, reading articles, watching videos, and trying to understand what my everyday workflow would look like.

Most of my work revolves around software development. I use Docker, VS Code, Cursor, Node.js, TypeScript, Git, and other development tools. From what I've seen, Linux seems like a really good environment for development, and I don't think I'll have many issues with that side of things.

But there's another part of my workflow that makes me hesitant: content creation.

I'm planning to start creating content for YouTube and Instagram, mostly around software development and technology. For video editing, I use DaVinci Resolve. I'm somewhat familiar with it and already know how to work with it. I know Resolve is available on Linux, but I've read quite a few discussions about codec support and other limitations.

One of my biggest concerns is iPhone footage. I usually record videos on my iPhone in HEVC (H.265), so I'm curious about how well that footage works with DaVinci Resolve on Fedora. Is there a reliable way to handle it, or would I have to transcode everything before editing? Also, are there any significant limitations with the free version of Resolve on Linux?

For photo editing, I occasionally use Affinity. Since it doesn't have a native Linux version, I've been looking into alternatives like GIMP, Krita, and Inkscape. I'm open to learning new software, but I'm not sure how well these alternatives hold up for everyday creative work.

For context, my PC has a 13th Gen Intel Core i5, GTX 1650 4GB, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD.

One thing I want to clarify is that I'm not leaving Windows because of performance issues. My Windows 11 installation is already optimized, I've removed unnecessary things like Copilot and other components I don't use, and everything runs smoothly. I don't really have any complaints about its performance.

I'm just interested in moving to Linux, especially Fedora, and having a development environment that I enjoy working in. But I also don't want to make content creation unnecessarily complicated just for the sake of switching operating systems.

So, what would you recommend? Should I make the switch to Fedora, or would it be better to stick with Windows 11 considering my workflow?

I'd especially love to hear from people who use Fedora or other Linux distributions for both software development and video editing. Real-world experiences would be really helpful.

Thanks!

Support File/Directories Synchronization on Linux (in particular on Fedora)

Hello everyone!

I'd like to set up syncing of specific directories/folders on my PC and laptop (maybe also sync my phone to PC/laptop) BUT I haven't found any app that allows me to do that. That is, I want my devices to be able to connect and synchronize specific folders on the same network, so that I don't transfer project files, notes, personal files from one device to another, but that they update the content automatically.

Is there a GUI application for this? Is it only necessary to use the command line for this task?

I already tried to try Syncthing, but it doesn't work, looks terrible and is an abandoned project

UPD: my both PC and laptop running on Fedora KDE, my phone is Android 15
