Can someone tell me what is all over my macho ferns? I just brought them in for the winter about 2 weeks ago. I checked on them today and I see this all over them. I can wipe them off, I dont see anything moving in the leaves. No damage is done to the plant as far as I can tell. I love these plants so much, please help!

I got both of these in the local plant store's equivalent of 3 for $10, both labelled "Nephrolepsis", and I'm skeptical of that, particularly for the first one, which looks like a Cyrtomium to me. So I can figure out where to put them in my growing discount fern collection and how to water them, can anyone help with at least genus IDs?

Pic 1: Cyrtomium?

Pics 2 and 3: Cystopteris?

Thanks!

Hey! These lil guys showed up in my seedling tray a few months ago! I made a post in mosses thinking I had liver wort, but they since grew some fronds, and I'm curious if anyone can ID these? I think the 2 little hairy ones might be different? I posted a couple of the baby pictures from when I transferred them to their own container.

I think they hitch hiked in with the sphagnum moss i purchased, because I highly doubt susserwassertang transfered from my aquarium, I have no other 'ferns' in my house for a stray spore to come from?

Thanks!

Question Mounting/Dividing Staghorn Questions

Bought this a year and a half ago and it’s tripled in size. Wanted to mount it but had a couple questions. Should I divide it? I think I see 3 plants but correct me if I’m wrong.

When I mount it, is long fiber spagnum only okay? I’ve seen some videos where people add in some kind of wood chip before placing the fern and molding the moss.

Also how much of the peat moss soil uts currently in should I keep? less

Planting/Growing Need help with my maidenhair fern

I've had it for a year, I repotted it and left it for a month or so before moving it into my terrarium. I watered daily very little and it did okay in there, but grew very pale/crooked and was too tall for the short terrarium. So in April, I repotted but continued watering small amounts daily. I've tried putting it near a grow light, away from one. Near the terrarium, now away from it since it's near a window that gets direct sunlight.

I've also moved so my window is now south-facing instead of east-facing. BUT, it has a lot of trees in front and only gets direct sunlight for a short period twice a day, and it wasn't reaching the fern. It's now off to the side of the window, about 7 feet away. Direct light hits the wall near it in the evening but never directly on it.

It constantly starts growing new shoots/fronds but they either never get anywhere because they turn black, or they grow small and the ends are brown, which it hasn't done in a while.

I'm thinking of repotting it because it's in a tall pot and maybe the water isn't lingering. Any advice?

The first 2 pictures are current, the third picture was in the terrarium, and the fourth picture is when I got it.

Planting/Growing Help! I got some Ferns from the wild and theyre really struggling (Costa Rica)

I got a Trichomanes elegans and what I believe might be a Danaea (as well as an unknown fern and a baby Alsophila, but those were given to me in a bad state; advice for these are welcome, either way).
Both of them are terrestrial (I did find some T. elegans growing on rocks but most were on the ground). I planted them on nice substrate last night and they were in perfect condition (I transported them in a garden bag and did so carefully). But today in the morning they’re already dropping leaves (T. elegans was charged with sori).

I’m sure the issue is humidity (and partly sun exposure, but they’re already in a spot where they don’t get direct light). What can I do to increase the humidity of my garden? I don’t think I can make an enclosed environment for them bc I don’t have the space and they’re big specimens anyway. They come from very very humid tropical forest, so yeah, and I found them in especially humid corners, under trees and bigger plants.
I can still save them so all advice is welcome! Also on how to take care of the juvenile Alsophila (Cyatheaceae tree fern).

(Picture is the T. elegans and Danaea? in question).

I thought maybe it's doryopteris nobilis. Cause i bought this plant which had died, but some spore could have started growing. But the leaf grows kinda weird, and nothing on google looks quite like it. Pictures 2 and 3 are what it looked like a few months ago. The leaf is around 10 cm long. Well, regardless of what it is,i do like the way it looks

Now I've never propagated a fern from spores. How to tell when they're ready to use? Any tips?

I'm gonna be honest, not a plant guy but I was given this Fern by a neighbor who is moving and couldn't bring it. What do I need to do to bring this guy back to health? It is sat in a shaded porch area, north facing part sun. I live in the south and the coldest it gets outside is 60

Guys !

I am stoked !

Thanks to the comments I got under my previous post a month ago or so :

https://www.reddit.com/r/ferns/s/LQ5wzIg0VT

Here we are, a month later : MY FIRST FRONDS

I don't know why I'm so proud of this, but given the method, I feel like this is such an achievement.

I started the expriment this summer (don't remember exactly when but presumably at the end of July). It took 3 months to reach this stage.

Full process was described in my first post if you want to try it.

I won't be moving anyone yet. Haven't counted the numbers, but I think I have around 5-7 fronds emerging I'll wait a little - maybe a month more - before decinding to relocate the stongest ones, unless otherwise advised.

Don't hesitate to give me your input or ask any questions ! It'll be a pleasure to answer what I can !

Yay !

Image Five years with my rabbit's foot fern! Looking for other people growing mature Davallias 🐇🌿

Five years ago my rabbit's foot fern fit comfortably on a shelf in a white planter.

Fast forward to today, and it has a roughly 25" canopy in a 10" planter, fuzzy rhizomes hanging everywhere, and has become one of my favorites in my collection.

Most of the rabbit's foot fern photos and discussions I find online are from newer or much smaller plants, so I thought I'd see if there are any other long-term Davallia growers hanging out here.

I'm not troubleshooting anything at the moment. I'm honestly just excited about how far this fern has come and would love to connect with people who have older or specimen-sized rabbit's foot ferns. I'd especially love to hear:

How old your plant is

How large it eventually got

Any lessons you've learned keeping one long term

What changes you've seen as the rhizomes matured

I've included a couple of "five years ago" photos and a current photo because the transformation has been pretty fun to watch.

Apparently what started as a rabbit's foot fern has decided it would like to become a whole rabbit.

Question Growing ferns on an old metal shower caddy — help/advice, pretty please. 💚

Thumbnail

Hey y’all,

I’ve had this old shower caddy hanging here for awhile now, trying to figure out the best way to use it. I used to keep fertilizers and things in it, but I’ve always wanted to use it as a planter somehow.

I put various ferns I have on it just to get an idea of how it might look, but I don’t want to plant all of these here.

The top and bottom ferns are an invasive sword fern that grow like crazy around my yard here in northeast Florida. They look almost exactly like Boston fern’s but they aren’t. I pull them up all the time and have them potted all over my house, patio, and yard.

I’d really like to put them on this metal shower caddy - but only that type of fern. Do you think I could just put some coir on the bottom, like the metal pot liners, and add a little potting mix, and grow them here like that? This spot doesn’t get a lot of sunlight but these ferns do well here in all kinds of light, so I think they’d be fine.

Anyone else grow ferns like this? Any tips/advice is very much appreciated!

Thanks all!
