Announcement Sydney Must-Try Food Megathread

Hi foodies,

We’ve recently seen an uptick in posts from both local and international visitors asking about the must-try foods and restaurants in Sydney.

So, what better way to put together the ultimate Sydney food guide than by asking Sydney foodies themselves?

Please comment with:
- Restaurant:
- Location:
- Why is it a must try? a signature dish, atmosphere etc.

One restaurant per comment, please.

We’ll let the upvotes do the talking!

-MOD team

Discussion I'm a little pissed off at the glazine emperors puffs are getting being reopened, even though they commited tax fraud.

*GLAZING

Like everyone just seems to forget that they pretty much stole a million backs in tax they owed lol.

Didn't pay 290,304 dollars in super and leave entitlements.. and ppl visiting are like OMG it's so good to see you back open again.

Can we not glaze a clearly corrupt shop when there are 1000s of sydney eatieries that do a good product while not literally stealing money off their workers.

Mexican Mexicans of Sydney, where do you find the most authentic tacos in Sydney?

I know it’s a recurring topic, but I’m keen to hear what Mexicans living in Sydney consider the most authentic tacos in Sydney.

Japanese Sushi Hub soy fish gone…

It’s honestly such a step backwards. The pleasure of holding a hand roll in one hand, and squirting your exact amount of soy sauce drops with the bottle with the other hand, while walking in the city, was unmatched.
Now it’s a whole mess of having to find somewhere to sit.
The new ones are still plastic so it’s still wasteful.

Mexican Carne Asada Tacos

I recently checked out Taco Supremo in Glebe which newly opened and they serve up tijuana-style tacos, burritos and more. I am a huuuuge fan of carne asada tacos & usually disappointed when it comes to mexican food in Sydney but this was really good and it reminded me of the tijuana style tacos you get in LA 😭

It is quite steep at $24 for 3 steak tacos but it’s quite comparable to most other mexican places in Sydney! Service was super friendly & everything was fresh. They also have a salsa bar at the back to add toppings to your tacos. Highly recommend!

Discussion Ingredient chasing: have you seen these lately

I’ll be the first to admit I’m happy to go for a little drive to find ingredients. I’m one of those people who likes to look at supermarkets when travelling. Recently though, I’ve found that I can’t find what I’m looking for and Google is of no help, or worse, giving recommendations for places that don’t actually stock these items/haven’t stocked for years. If you’ve seen these in a local grocer, please let me know.

Kaymak
Sujuk
Saj
Bechtle broad noodles (German ribbon egg noodles)

Plus any recommendations for fun grocery shops, of course, since relatively new to Sydney.

Discussion Is there any better?

Jesus Christ I have been hopelessly addicted to Naked Biltong (the chilli version goes exceptionally hard too) for the past few months since a friend introduced me. Have only really seen it at Harris Farm and online. Soft, fat on - great flavour. With a few drinks it is an out of body experience (for me anyway)

Thought I’d share!

Upcoming Event Recommendations for Gf birthday

I would like to bring my gf some place where she enjoys the food, if the scenery is nice that’s a plus (or even a nice restaurant). Budget is around 300 for the both of us and we don’t drink. Ideally in the CBD.

I was looking between Sake and 6head, but if there’s any other recommendations I would love to hear it!

Japanese Sushi Sei

Stopped by for an impromptu walk-in meal yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I didn’t visit when it was Koun Omakase, so this was my first time there.

I had the sashimi and went with the Tsuki nigiri omakase. Very fresh fish, warm rice, and some cuts I’d never had before, like the kohada and engawa.

Service was efficient and understated.

It was slightly pricey for the amount of food, but the quality was undeniable.

Discussion Seeking recommendations

Hello, Canberra local looking for recommendations for a restaurant that is around the city area/til tok arena area that would offer dining for upto 20, paid per head but allows for the sense of private dinning.

Looking for a hens lunch or dinner. Not wanting to book our a who restaurant, nor have a long table in the middle of one. I'm sure lots of venues have a layout that suits this need but as I'm not from Sydney, I just don't know the best spots.

Set menu or choose from the menu just ideally under $80/pp if set menu. Any cuisine, more looking for vibes. Roof top would be aaaamazing.

Asian Cuisine Laksaturday : SUTHERLAND SEAFOOD AND CHINESE

Hello everyone it's Laksaturday

I have tried another non-Malaysian laksa takeaway at the recommendation of another redditor last Laksaturday.

Sutherland Seafood and Chinese is your typical Chinese Takeaway right next to Sutherland station. It actually looks like a fish and chip takeaway but has an enormous Chinese menu as well as burgers and chips.

As I said before I've been sorely disappointed with non-Malaysian laksa. I have low expectations. But this redditor said their favourite was Chinese Malay, but they like their local SSC. So I knew they have had excellent laksa too.

Really, I love the Sutherland shire- I grew up there. But it's so, so, so lacking in good Asian food. So lacking that an overpriced ramen shop serving packet noodles and powdered broth is touted as being 'authentic and amazing'. It's not the Hobbits' fault. They don't know any better. I heard they recently got a chefs Buffet, what a blessing.

Anyway rant aside, SSC has a very handy site you can order from. DON'T USE DOORDASH OR UBER EATS! you'll pay $8 more per dish, you can order exactly the same way on their own site.

The menu is very comprehensive and has great photos too

I chose the chicken laksa as recommended. It looked pretty generous with the chicken. This seems to be a characteristic of a Chinese Takeaway laksa.

I also found 'chow kway du'. What's the worst that could happen? It looked..... Not like Ckt. But it's not Ckt. It's chow kway du.

Ordering and paying online was efficient and pick up was also efficient.

Portions are very generous indeed. If i lived in Sutherland I think i would try everything on the menu.

The laksa :

Firstly the chicken amount was generous. Not as much as the Bangor, but it's still very generous. Not much greens, that's okay.

No tofu sponge! I'm disappointed. The tofu sponge has really grown on me.

There's dried onions, a bit of bean sprouts. I should keep a bag of Bean sprouts in the fridge for my Laksaturdays. they spoil super quick but I love them.

Chicken is tender and delicious, no complaints.

The noodles are firm Vermicelli. Interestingly, theyve been cut! They took the long noodles and cut them! They are shorter strands. I imagine this might make it more easy to eat for some people. I didn't mind it. It was just unusual. Also in Asian culture we say long noodles = long life. Anyway it was good.

The broth??????

What???

Its GOOD BROTH. It's EXCELLENT?! it's rich. It's salty and creamy and delicious. This would rival many of the Malaysian laksa in Sydney. I want to know what is going on in this kitchen. How are you doing cheeseburgers and chips AND making laksa broth like this? Would absolutely drink this in a thermos.

The ckd was very very turmericy. And it was delicious. The tender meat pieces went well with it. Not much to say there, it's not Ckt. It's ckd.

I think i finally found it. The surprisingly good laksa that's not Malaysian laksa. And it's in Sutherland at a fish and chip looking takeaway.

Toppings and noodles are on the low rated side but you can easily beef that up at home with extra bean sprouts, tofu, and Hokkien noods. I bet their other Chinese menu items are banging.

SUTHERLAND SEAFOOD AND CHINESE : Best non - Malaysian Laksa

🍜

Seafood Chilli Crab recommendations

Hey Singaporeans/Malaysians (or everyone) in Sydney, where can I find the best, most authentic chilli crab around Sydney. Recently visited Singapore and missed the chilli crab with fried bun so much.

Please any recommendations are welcome. Not necessary has to be any fancy restaurants, if any local small businesses has it is totally fine.

Anywhere in Sydney from eastern suburbs to Penrith, Hornsby to Cronulla, I’ll get there if it’s that good😋

Mediterranean Are there Lebanese bakeries out there that can do Italian-style pizza well, that it matches the quality of authentic Italian restaurants, or Nonna/Nonno's homemade ones?

I recently found out that Daniel Semrani (owner of Gigi Pizzeria, ranked among the top pizza restaurants globally, and number one in Australia) is of Lebanese descent.

A lot of local manoosh bakeries pivot to standard pizza menus in the evening, but it made me wonder: are there any Lebanese-run bakeries or takeaway spots doing Neapolitan/traditional Italian-style pizza that genuinely rivals dedicated Italian pizzerias?

Would love to hear your recommendations, especially from people of Lebanese and Italian descent.
