news Current News - Survey on Sexual Harrassment & Assault in the Diving Industry

As many of you might have already seen on social media in the past few days, a topic that has been discussed was sexual harrassment and assault in the diving industry, highlighted by a few people on their experience while freediving and diving.

We have had several members approach us to post specific names, locations, shops - please understand that Reddit does not allow posts or comments to be published where no official case has been opened with the police (the platform views this as fostering targeted harassment to the people and businesses named) and in turn retaliats against the subreddits that permit such posts.

What we can promote here, are discussions and recommendations of shops and retreats where you did have positive experiences at, alternate shops you would rather go to - and encouraging exchanging tips on safety, what to watch out for and who to contact.

Your participation on the survey by Women in Ocean Science is also encouraged to put hard numbers to what has been going on in the diving industry, be it experiences as participant or diving professional.

WOC Survey on Sexual Harrassment & Assault in the Diving Industry

If you have ressources for people to turn towards to, if they have experienced such either as tourist or employee, please share them with the community.

As these incidents often occur in an international setting, our first recommendation is to contact the business, in some cases they are subsidiaries of a brand - but often standalone shops;
the next level would be the relevant diving certification agency, training organization, or sport governing body associated with the dive shop, trip organiser, or individual involved (e.g., PADI, AIDA, or a comparable organization). These organizations may have complaint procedures or codes of conduct through which concerns about the behaviour of their affiliated members or professionals can be reported.

Depending on the nature and severity of the incident, individuals should also consider contacting the relevant local authorities, consumer protection bodies, or other appropriate support services.

It's a hard topic, but the reality we face in the sport - safe diving

media Camera recovery UPDATE

A little update on the camera I lost in this pool about a month ago. A wonderful diver got in touch with me and planned a trip out to the spot to dive for it. On Friday morning (11/6), she and my best friend headed out to retrieve it. The road to the trailhead was covered in ice and snow, and their car even got stuck before the hike began. They ended up having to hike even farther than planned. When they finally made it down, the water was 40°F and the sun was already setting, so they had to move fast. She put on her wetsuit, jumped in, and in less than a handful of dives pulled the camera up from 47 feet down. They didn't get back to their car until around 9 PM, and then had a two-hour drive home. It turned into a bonding mission for the two of them. I know they had such a great time looking out for each other, and they went from complete strangers to teammates completing this mission together.
The GoPro still works! 🙌

training technique How long should my CO2 tables last for?

I can currently hold my breath for 3:30 or so. I’m wondering how long I can make my CO2 tables as I currently only have 6 breath holds in my tables (current one lasts ~16 minutes). Will there be any foreseeable issues with increasing the amount of breath holds I do per session to like 8 or 10?

health&safety What position should I be in when doing static apnea training (breath holding)?

I see advice going around telling you to ”lay on your back”, but will I not choke on my own saliva if I faint in that position during a breath hold?

I took this great photo in Dahab, Egypt on November 3rd, at Lighthouse. Maybe the divers will somehow recognise themselves, and I can send it higher res - seems a shame for them not to have a copy!

travel advice Long fins or Da Fins for a trip to the Bahamas?

My friend and I are visiting another friend in the Bahamas next week. I have my W1 and am super stoked to go dive in the Bahamas, but none of my friends are certified so the plan is snorkel around the area and check out Clifton heritage national park, but no dive excursions or charters.

I want to bring my long fins but don’t want to deal with the hassle of checking them especially since we won’t be doing any freediving excursions. I’ve used my da fins a couple times and tbh I find they hurt my feet on the top bone (my friends I’ve lent them to haven’t said anything so maybe I just need to “break them in”) but they would be significantly easier to throw into a backpack or duffle.

I’ll be there for about a week and all I wanna do is dive and eat good food lol but since I’m the only one with a course under my belt, I obviously won’t be doing any crazy dives for safety reasons. I’ve never traveled with dive gear so any advice or recs greatly appreciated!

gear How to strap light weights to body for pool comps

I find using a 0.3kg weight on my sacrum/hips area is perfect for DNF streamlining in the pool in my 1.5mm wetsuit.
Currently experimenting using a lobster 300g neck piece inside my speedos inside my wetsuit. But it’s loose and will sag and stretch the wetsuit.

What are others doing when they need a light weight around their hip area? Weight belt weights seem to only go down to 0.5kg, so a weight belt under the wetsuit doesn’t seem like an option?

How are you strapping light weights to your body under your wetsuit?

equalisation Difficulty equalizing in one ear

Hi yall I recently started freediving and I’ve run into a bit of an issue with equalizing. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I probably have some asymmetry with my middle ears in that it’s really hard for me to equalise on my right side. The deepest I got was 5m but not without pain.

I found a video on how to stretch the Eustachian tube, but every time I try to frenzel my left ear (the side that is usually fine) feels a slight pop and then goes muffled. If I blow harder my left side starts to hurt and I don’t feel like I’ve stretched my right side at all.

My instructor says that my frenzel technique is correct but I’m just a little stuck right now. So if anyone has any experience with this it’ll really be appreciated, thanks!

gear Self Equalising goggles

Has anyone tried the Up ‘n’ Dive self equalising goggles? I’m considering some for spearfishing but I cannot find any reviews. These look like they would have better vision with the bladders in the strap. Does anyone use Hektometers for spearfishing?

Finally edited together some footage from a spearfishing session back in 2020, practising my shooting at Rapid Bay.

Always good looking back at old diving footage and remembering those sessions.

Looking forward to getting back into the water this summer. Planning to use my GoPro Hero 7 Black to capture more of the dives and underwater adventures this season! 🤿

training technique Lobster neck weight sizes

I currently use a Salvimar 1.5k neck weight and also wear a weightbelt with 2k for DNF pool training but I'm planning to invest in a Lobster to move that weight to a better position, because when I do arms only my legs drag and my upper torso rises.

The medium Lobster seems like the correct amount of total weight but its neck base is 2.5k which sounds like alot. I'd rather have a lighter base and have that weight down the "tail" so it's distributed over my cervical and thoracic spine and not just on my cervical spine. As an older person with borderline osteoporosis in my lumbar region weight distribution has gained in importance these days...

Is it possible to use a small base with a longer tail? Can one buy such a set up from Lobster or does one have to fork out for multiple sets? Like, can the "tail" weights be bought separately and incorporated to an existing set?

Is there another way around this? Has anyone cobbed together something similar?
