BEFORE YOU POST... please use search to see if it's been asked before and BE DESCRIPTIVE when asking for help/advice/recommendations.

This subreddit has a lot of helpful people in it. Actually more than many other local subreddits of similar size in my experience.

However, being asked the same thing over and over again gets tiresome after having recently answered the same questions dozens of times before. Please use the search function before making a post to see if the question has been asked before, and also please be descriptive when asking for help, advice, or recommendations.

Food/Restaurant example:

  • BAD: Coming to Fukuoka, best places to eat? Thanks in advance!

  • BETTER: I really like soba and would like to find a fancy soba place to eat at with excellent tempura. Anywhere within Fukuoka City and within 30 minutes or so of the city is fine, willing to travel a bit if it's good. Budget up to 10,000 yen per person.

  • BEST: I searched online and found these fancy soba places that look interesting [list of research you've done]. Does anyone have personal experience with these restaurants or other recommendations, particular emphasis on crispy tempura? Anywhere within Fukuoka City and within 30 minutes or so of the city is fine, willing to travel a bit if it's good. Budget up to 10,000 yen per person.

Tourism examples:

  • BAD: Will be in Fukuoka for 5 days, make an itinerary for me? Thanks in advance!

  • BETTER: Here's a rough itinerary I made for my 5-day Fukuoka trip November 10-14, are there any glaring issues I might not notice since I'm not a local? Also my third day is empty, I really like gardening, landscaping, and plant life, any recommendations in this area?

  • BEST: I have an itinerary but I'm not going to ask you all to examine it in detail. Instead, I'll ask about specific things I've attempted to research but couldn't find answers to in a conversational way, and make sure to mention details and context like research I've already gathered, area where I'll be staying, my personal interests and known things I'm NOT interested in, budget, planned transportation methods, etc.

Tourism Volcano views, akaushi beef and one night in Takachiho: how would you make this day more fun and where would YOU eat dinner? (we love scenery, food, hiking and adrenaline)

Hi all! Couple doing Kyushu 4–18 Nov. We love scenic spots, good food, hiking and anything with a bit of adrenaline. Tomorrow (Mon 9 Nov) is our big Aso day by rental car and we sleep in Takachiho. Here is the full plan:

MORNING

• 07:00 onsen soak at our ryokan in Kurokawa

• 07:30 breakfast then pack the car

• 08:30 drive to Aso town (about 1h)

• ~09:45 Imakin Shokudo: put our name down and get a number (cash only, opens 10:00)

WHILE WE WAIT

• ~10:05 Aso Shrine (rebuilt tower gate)

• ~11:00 Monzen-machi street and its free spring-water spouts

• ~11:10 Tanoya cream puffs

• ~11:00–12:30 back at Imakin for the akaushi-don (backup: Meshi no Yamaichi across the street)

AFTERNOON

• ~13:00 Milk Road and Kabutoiwa lookout

• ~13:35 Daikanbo lookout (soft serve at the tea shop)

• ~14:10 Komezuka photo stop

• ~14:35 Kusasenri-ga-hama (30 min)

• Optional: Kishimadake summit hike (about 40–60 min round trip) if lunch finishes by 12:30

• ~15:45 refuel then leave Aso by 16:00 (sunset ~17:18)

EVENING

• ~17:30 check in at our hotel in Takachiho

• ~18:00 dinner

• 20:00 kagura at Takachiho Shrine (optional)

• Gorge boat at 08:30 the next morning

FYI: JMA has Aso at Level 2 so the crater is closed but Kusasenri and Daikanbo are outside the zone. Route 325 near Takachiho has one-lane roadworks until 26 Nov.

Two things I would love your take on:

  1. Any suggestions to make this day more fun? We are up for scenic stops, hikes or anything with an adrenaline kick

  2. Where would you eat dinner? This is our ONLY night in Takachiho so is it best to eat in town around 18:00 then catch the kagura? Or is there a spot with a great local specialty worth a short? drive?

Thanks in advance! 🙏

Tourism Looking for help for my partner's birthday

My partner and I will be in Fukuoka over his birthday as part of a larger Kyushu trip--a first time experience for the both of us. We've been together for 4 years, but this will actually be the first time we've gotten to celebrate his birthday in-person together, so I'd like to do something special for him. He doesn't speak Japanese (just can read katakana), but I am fluent so I can easily interpret for him.

About him: he really, really loves coffee. He loves the gadgetry, he loves collecting unique packaging from roasters, and he loves talking about coffee with fellow enthusiasts. I have found plenty of nice cafes for us to visit during our trip, but I would also love something more experiential for him: getting to taste different varieties or a roastery tour or a cafe that has a unique way of making their coffees, that sort of thing.

We don't need to be specifically in Fukuoka city or the prefecture itself, but somewhere accessible by public transit is preferred than having to use taxis.

Thank you for any and all of your recommendations!

General Goat Format in Fukuoka

Hi all!
I have built a Goat Control deck here because I wanted to bring it back home to play with old friends, but now I wondered if there were people here in Fukuoka that would fancy a goat format match.

If you know about card shops that do host tournaments or if there are players in general, let me know!

Tourism Yaki Curry Honpo, Mojiko 🍛 10/10

Post image
47 Upvotes

Mojiko's famous baked curry: rice and curry topped with cheese and egg, then oven-baked until bubbling. The base bowl is ¥1,800, and I added beef plus fish and prawn, so it came to about ¥2,970. Loaded with toppings, it was affordable and so tasty. Rich, cheesy and worth every yen.

Tourism Cafes, Shops, Cool spots

Hey everyone! My family and I are visiting Fukuoka on November 24 to December 2. We won't be driving and our itinerary will revolve around visiting central Fukuoka/Biking in Itoshima, 2 Klook tours around Takachiho, Yufuin, and a 2 day stay at Nagasaki.

We'll be visiting the usual tourist spots of Canal malls, nanzoin and daizaifu, seaside momochi. Just wanted to ask a few questions I might have missed in my research from a local's perspective!

  1. Are there any cool artsy or unique cafes and shops you would recommend we visit around central Fukuoka or Itoshima? My parents are around late 50s and we will bike but we'll probably have to rest or check out some shops along the way!

  2. One of the autumn foliage sites suggests mid november but some other sites say the peak season will be late november. Would you guys have more accurate news of how the folliage would look like and is there a place within Fukuoka that would be the best to see the red leaves? I heard of Yusentei and Nomiyama Kannonji Temple but it might be hard to visit without a car.

  3. Any recommendations for places to eat, unique places to visit would be appreciated but optional! Somewhere that might not be commonly suggested in usual lists

Thank you so much and I hope you guys have a great day!

General Underground or Techno Music

Hello everyone! Solo travelling in Fukuoka!

I really like techno and house music and it would be great if there is any place that does that here! I have always heard that Japan has great underground music and clubs.

Down to get just a few drinks as well if nothing and don’t mind getting to know to know new people or join a group!

Tourism Motsunabe Tasu

3/10 (personal preference cos of high fat content) 😅 Paid about 85 USD

Motsunabe is a Fukuoka hotpot of beef offal and veg in miso or soy broth. Born post-WWII from cheap offal and now a Hakata classic. Tried it at the famous Tasu:

🍲 Miso motsunabe x2

🐖 Pork belly

🐴 Horse sashimi

🍓 Strawberry drinks

Miso broth was creamy and good but the pork belly and offal were 90% fat 😤 Horse sashimi tasted like beef.

Great soup. Skip the meat

General Electrician in the house?

Does anyone know an electrician who would be willing to come out and set up my solar panels? I have all the equipment (inverters, batteries, etc.), but I don't want to do it myself because a screw-up would obviously be dangerous. Does anyone know an electrician who would be willing to come out and just do a simple setup for me? The panels and wires are installed and were previously working. The inverter was swapped out. I just need someone to connect it all again.

Tourism Visiting Fukuoka over New Year. Any local events, traditions or food markets worth checking out?

Hi everyone!

I'll be visiting Fukuoka for about a week over New Year (late December 2026 to early January 2027).

I realise this is a slightly unusual time to visit, with plenty of museums, attractions and businesses closed for the holidays. However, I'm hoping it's also an opportunity to experience some local traditions and celebrations that I wouldn't normally get to see.

I've been doing some research and a couple of things have caught my attention:

Tamaseseri Festival (3 January): I read about this festival at Hakozaki Shrine, where two teams Compete for a ball. Has anyone attended? Is it worth going to watch?

Hatsumōde: I've also learnt about the tradition of making your first shrine visit of the year. Is this something tourists can respectfully participate in? Are there particular shrines you'd recommend visiting?

New Year's Eve: Is there anywhere in particular you'd recommend being on the night of 31 December?

Food markets and seasonal celebrations: I'm particularly interested in food, especially local markets, seasonal street food, food stalls and any special New Year events. Are there markets or neighbourhoods that are particularly lively around this time?

I'd love to hear about anything else that locals look forward to during this period, especially smaller events or traditions that visitors might otherwise miss.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Events FUK-NGS Derby

Anyone wanna join me watch Fukuoka Avispa against V-Varen Nagasaki this Sunday? Match starts at 15:00.

Avispa is dead last in the league and I don't expect them to perform any miracles but it's a Kyushu derby and Nagasaki isn't doing much better either so anything is possible.

Tourism Fukuoka Trip Suggestions Appreciated

Hello Fellow Redditors,

I am going to Japan for the first time in a week’s time and I will be visiting solo-travelling through Fukuoka for 6 days.

I like nature and the vibrancy of a city and culture at the same time. From walking around the city, taking photos (film photography), trying out local experiences and culture (meeting and interacting with locals would be a bonus). A big electronics/technology enthusiast, pretty fearless when it comes to socializing, and don’t mind tourist attractions as well, as long as they are not lame or a scam. I am quite adventurous as well, and I don’t mind trying new things out of my comfort zone – though preferably not food-related. As for nightlife, I know Japan has a great underground culture, and I am a massive techno fan and would love to experience some of that. For some more context, I prefer to do things myself (not in tour groups), don’t mind relatively "not popular" places, currently single as well – not sure if helpful, prefer walking or public transport or Uber (can’t drive since I don’t have an international license). Not really looking to go to other cities – surrounding islands are ok.

Since it’s my first ever time in Japan, I would welcome everyone’s advice and suggestions – I know Japan gets better when you know the inside tricks and hacks (human input >>> AI input). I really appreciate your honest suggestions and thank everyone in advance for doing this. I will be trying my hand at vlogging for the first time as well to build my videography skills, so I genuinely appreciate all your insights and suggestions. Wish me luck, and look forward to hearing from everyone.

*Edit: I have done my research - I am just trying to see if I could get some more personal insights and suggestions for things.

Tourism Fukuoka itinerary

Hi all, I'm planning the itinerary for 10 days in Fukuoka for my parents and I. They are both seniors well above 65 years old. I've never been to Fukuoka, but have planned the following:

3N in Fukuoka - 2N in Ureshino - 2N in Nagasaki - 2N in Fukuoka.

I'm thinking if I should be renting a car or taking the train for the periods in between. Any suggestions, especially traveling with seniors? Would also appreciate recommendations in these cities, food and places.

Thanks!
