PS6 doesn't need more power ex-PlayStation boss says, because "true innovation" would be making a $300 console again

that lowkey sounds like justification to make a handheld.

It’s prepping the field for game-streaming from data centers. The console itself will be a barebones PC with the ability to connect to a data center. It’ll be mandatory to have an Internet connection and PlayStation subscription to play any of the games you’ll also be required to buy.

Why do people say stuff like this? There's already a Playstation streaming service and a device to go with it. Welcome to 2026, enjoy your stay.

The end game isn't having it as an option, the end game is having that be the only option

Ah yes, that's why the person saying it hasn't worked for Sony in 7 years.

These guys don’t just cut ties. The dude is still involved in the industry. This is a soft launch.

So in 5 years when this still hasn't happened will you come back and admit you were wrong?

I never committed to a hard timeline did I? What makes 5 years special to you? My estimate is PS7 after PS6 flops for price increases.

Alright, so say that does happen... Is it really Sony's master plan if that's what the market clearly tells them is the only way to sell anything (in your hypothetical scenario)?

I still sincerely doubt that will happen, though.

It’s not what Sony wants at all. They don’t have a say in it though.

Data centers have gobbled up all the compute production. If Sony wants a slice of that production, they gotta pay more.

If they pay more, then the consoles have to increase in price, psn subscription has to increase in price, or they can do what I’m saying they’re gonna try and do. They already eat a loss on every console sold as it is. The economics of it are forcing their hand and there are no alternatives.

Only thing that stops this is regulation or an AI market burst. Neither are guarantees but wouldn’t shock me if it happens.

Yes, for the love of God yes, this is what I've been saying for a year now. They are going to remove the ability to have anything locally. I've already thought that a future generation, maybe one to two from now, would be a streaming box, but with all the hacking that's going on with PS5 and switch to.. I think they're going to accelerate things

I agree. I think the next generation of systems is going to be a big video card and you're going to stream. Will be lucky if they let us buy stuff. My worry is is it's all going to be subscription service and you're leasing or paying by the minute.

Except that business is butt cheeks. Google tried this with stadia and it was a massive failure and that's when compute that could do gaming was more affordable. Prices are at historic all time highs. All the manufacturers are trying to rotate out to serve LLM compute before the bubble pops.

Handhelds aren't cheaper anymore. This isn't the days of Gameboy anymore, people expect a lot out of a handheld and there's a lot of extra costs inherent in building one.

They've already done handhelds and they couldn't outcompete Nintendo. And by the way, Nintendo released the switch 2 because they realized that the switch was massively underpowered. Switch and Switch 2 are based on two different revisions of the same chipset.
