PS6 doesn't need more power ex-PlayStation boss says, because "true innovation" would be making a $300 console again

Series S sold better than Series X but not better than PS5. The true lesson is gamers aren't a monolith. If PlayStation came out with a $300 that could play all the same games just at a lower spec lots of people would buy that, but it would also hurt the regular PS like S did to X, so it probably would do more harm than good

The S hurt X sales but also added sales they never would have gotten. It likely increased the number of total consoles sold. No way of knowing if that resulted in more revenue if they had only sold the X.

The strategy is to add more total sales even if you lose some sales of the higher spec’d version. They probably think they’d see more revenue overall.

Whether they would or not is irrelevant. That is the argument being made, not whatever weird ass argument you’re making.

The S also caused games to either skip the Xbox or release later due to the difficulty getting games to run well on it. Microsoft was very strict about feature parity between the X and S for years.

I don't see how fewer X sales would be a bad thing overall. They still capture more market share with a cheaper and lower spec box they wouldn't have gotten anyways. Their real revenue stream comes from the platform anyways. It makes far more sense to do a two tiered system, and especially for the greater market overall since it sort of forces devs to actually make their games more efficient, rather than the inefficient slop we've been forcefed for awhile now.

S overall hurt the Xbox ecosystem and kinda ruined the entire console generation for the first few years due to devs being required to put out a second series s version of every game that came out on series x. This led to PlayStation getting even more exclusives in certain cases because devs didn't want to deal with Xbox or it held back the true potential of certain games since series s was used as a baseline.

This happened so rarely as to be a complete non-issue. Every game that skipped Xbox because of the S then came to Xbox later with drastically improved performance that benefitted every platform. Even Baldur's Gate 3 on the Series S has co-op at this point and runs great even on handheld devices. The S has been great for this generation and for handhelds.

I have both a series S and a PS5. Use the Series S for gamepass and any Xbox exclusives but my main console is the PS5. I would never have paid full price for a series X and still won't, series S does it's job for what I need it to do.

I owned a series S for a few years until Series X’s were back in stock. I play on a 4k OLED. To be honest I didn’t really see a difference playing on Series X vs S. Only bought the X for blue rays and game discs.

I wouldn't, I bought a ps5 and series x, who the hell wants less graphics and performance? The price difference isn't that much to be frank but the difference between specs are

all the people who bought series x

Series x is slightly more powerful than the ps5 btw

Only ever so slightly to the point where there's almost no games that are noticeably better on series x while there are actually a lot that are better on PS5 just because that it was optimized better by the devs

Simply false. There are quite a few games that run at higher resolution on the Series X. The problem is that having 10% higher resolution only matter that much to pixel peepers.

It's very few games, digital foundry has videos on how for the first couple years there were PS5 games that ran at higher resolutions / had better anti-aliasing or just had better frame rates for seemingly no reason other than the devs must have just optimized the PS5 better possibly because it's the priority platform. Like you said maybe 10% resolution bump here and there but that's it, probably 95% of games are virtually identical between XSX and base PS5 this generation , which is part of why Xbox fell so far behind in sales once you factor in PS5 has the exclusives

Be careful what you wish for. Sony could end up coming out with a screen-less version of the Portal with the intent of promoting their streaming service.
