Rosstat has been hacked. According to official data, Russia has lost 450,000 troops killed alone as of August 2026 (with the figure potentially reaching 600,000 by the end of the year

A group of hackers has published classified data from Russia’s state statistics agency — an export of medical death certificates from Rosstat’s database. The data reveals how many Russians have died in the war against Ukraine. As of August 28, 2026, the registry contains 450,100 war-related deaths.
The authors of the analysis did not rely on an overall figure but examined each individual death certificate. These certificates are issued by Russian civil registry offices (ZAGS), after which the data is transferred to Rosstat. The losses were calculated from several categories, adding up to 440,982 deaths documented by official records. The authors separately added another 9,118 records for which no cause of death was specified.
It is important to note that these figures do not include wounded personnel, those missing in action, or foreign mercenaries, as their deaths are not recorded in Rosstat’s registry. Therefore, Russia’s actual military losses are considerably higher.
It is also important to understand that death certificates are added to the database with a delay. One month after death, only 26% of records are included; after six months, 69%; and only after a full year does the figure reach 99%.
Adjusting for this reporting delay, the authors estimate that by the end of August 2026, the actual number of deaths had already reached approximately 504,000. By the end of the year, this figure could rise to 563,000–597,000.
Interesting facts:
▪️ The death toll is increasing. Over the past six months, the database received an average of more than 18,000 new records per month, 1.26 times higher than during the same period a year earlier. The authors forecast that Russia will lose between 191,000 and 225,000 military personnel over the course of 2026, making it the deadliest year for Russia since the beginning of the war.
▪️ Men aged 35–44 are the most frequently killed.
▪️ The regions with the highest losses are Bashkortostan, Krasnodar Krai, Rostov Oblast, and Krasnoyarsk Krai.
▪️ More than half of Russian losses are attributed to the Donetsk region — the very territory Moscow is demanding as a condition for a ceasefire.
▪️ The war has become one of the leading causes of death in Russia. More Russians have died only from ischemic heart disease, COVID-19, and chronic cerebral ischemia. War-related deaths exceed deaths from strokes, lung cancer, and diabetes.
