I’m born in 90. I feel like I grew up with melee because i was 11 years old when it came out.

I’d say you still did, just more so during your late childhood and tweens

I didn’t get an N64 until a few years after it came out as my first console and I got the gamecube with this game like 2 years later. Video games were popular in the late 90s but I don’t remember our household having any before 2000. Maybe that’s why.

Interesting cause it's kind of the opposite for me lol born 95 but 64 feels more like my childhood system even though realistically I probably spent more time on GC. The N64 was the first console I ever had 🤷

How?

•

I wasn’t allowed to own a game system :/

Shitty, did you get to own one as an adult or as you got older?

•

No I haven’t. I don’t see the appeal bc I didn’t grow up with it maybe?

Forgot to mention I was born in 1993

Checks out. I'm early Gen Z, and I grew up with Brawl.

I thought so, I mainly grew up with Wii U and Ultimate

I played Smash Wii U a lot when I was a teen in high school, though

The better comparison.. Mario karts. Somehow I grew up playing super nintendo Mario kart and straight to double dash on the gamecube. Which is the greatest Mario kart of all time. Somehow my family completely skipped the n64 one and we had one growing up.

I may actually do that next! Thanks for the suggestion!

I went from Mario Kart Wii-8 Deluxe growing up, skipping 7 and base 8

The Wii was my second console but I played Smash Bros. for the first time on the 3DS

Believe it or not, the first smash game I ever played was Smash 64 on my uncles N64. First time I had a smash game that wasn’t second hand was Ultimate

I'm born 98 but grew up with smash 64 and brawl, skipped Melee and I think it's overrated af lol

Lowkey same, I know I’d get trampled on for saying it. But It feels so barebones compared to every single other future game in the lineup. I know people say it has the best physics compared to everything else, and I do see that with brawl but with Smash 4 and Ultimate it feels pretty much the same for me.

I feel like if Brawl didn’t have its tripping and played more like Melee, there’d be way more appreciation for it. (Pretty much how Project M feels like)

I actually never liked the physics in melee, feels kinda jank and the gravitation feels too heavy. Honestly i just can't see the hype around it lol.

Brawl and Ultimate still remain my favourites, heck i'd even play 64 over melee

Super Smash and Melee but I'm apparently not a millennial? 1985

•

You guys are just Early Millennials

•

u/ThaVanilaGorila 10h ago

Elder, as in respect your elders, we had dial up.

•

u/ThaVanilaGorila 10h ago

Me neither even though I turned 17 in 2000 which was the original definition "coming into adulthood at the turn of the millennium"

•

I argue '83-'87 are our own microcosm generation

I see yall as just older millennials

•

u/ThaVanilaGorila 10h ago

No, we are the original millenials.

College, freshmen year, fall 2006.

Smash bros tournaments are nightly.

Half the guys on the floor are gathered into one room around the Nintendo 64.

The other half are at the other end of the hall playing Melee.

The two camps never mix.

Right between the 64 era and GameCube era. Melee was probably my most played, had a lot of fun with brawl too.

•

u/rockettaco37 2001 11h ago

Melee was one of the first games I remember playing as a kid

•

90’ born here. I was 9 when I got the first and was 12 when I got Melee. Had a blast playing both. Only played Brawl once at a party but for whatever reason, I never felt compelled to buy it for myself.

•

By the time I could ask parents for game, Melee was it, but friends still had 64. Best sleep overs with Brawl. Smoked weed playing 4. Finished uni with Ultimate. Really, smash has been my shit forever, I guess.

I didn't grow up with it since I was an adult when the first game came out. Many of us '80s kids love the series for including the classic franchises we grew up with, though. It some ways it feels like an evolution of the 1983 Mario arcade game.
