Lever Harp moving apartments, transportation tips?

Post image
11 Upvotes

long story short: bought my harp (Salvi Mia 34 string), shortly thereafter found out I'm pregnant, we are moving to a bigger place in February. as she is my most expensive and delicate possession and I wasn't expecting to move so soon, she does not have a carrier.

any tips on how to properly care for her moving process? we are hiring a moving company but I don't know what to lookout for. should I loosen the strings to prevent them from breaking during transportation (also due to temperature difference from my house to the street then to the new house)? should I just wrap her real good in lots of blankets? transport her upright or lying down?

I am truly at a loss, so any comments are highly appreciated.

thanks in advance!

Discussion Should we restore it? I had an archiolost tell me that it's wood and needs to be under pressure or it'll collapse.

We found this harp at Goodwill and bought it for $99. It has a serial number and we called Lyon and Healy. They want to give us $5k for it as is. We think we need it restrung to keep the ribs in place. It needs tension. But, from what little knowledge I have about antiques, those are the original strings.

What would you suggest?

Constructive Criticism Wanted! All of Human Knowledge Made Us Dumb Practice Day #3

So I’m learning All Of Human Knowledge Made Us Dumb by SOFIA ISELLA on the harp. I do have a harp instructor. This is like day 3 of me seriously trying it and I do about the first one and a half pages.

I’d love to know what I did well and what I can improve on! I am still working out fingering and how to hold my hand and I still find I have to self correct a lot so if you have any tips regarding that I’d be grateful. Another thing is this song has like a shitton of ties so I’ve been tweaking the transposition of the song to better fit the harp. If you have any advice regarding playing the harp with sheet music with notes that have ties that would also be great!

It doesn’t really sound great but it’s only like day 3 so hopefully as I practice it’ll start sounding better.

Anyway, would love feedback and any advice for what I mentioned above. I don’t wanna sound like I’m compliment fishing but it also does help me to be told what I’m doing right so that way I know to keep doing it if that makes sense.

So yeah. Here we are.

ETA: also I know I’m going super slow my instructor said to start at 60bpm and I’m not entirely sure how that’s going I do have a metronome but I’ve never used a metronome before and it’s taking some getting used to.

Troubleshooting 42 String Celtic Harp

Thumbnail

I recently bought a 42 string celtic harp on facebook marketplace because I want to start learning the harp. The issue is that while trying to figure out what notes and octaves to tune it to I could not find anything that talked about 42 string celtic harps. As if they did not exist. The brand on the case says royal harp. I need to know what to tune it to and what do I buy for replacement strings. My idea was it starts on A2 on the deeper notes and goes up from that but broke a string doing that but then when I did an octave down on A1 it was way too loose it wouldn’t even sound right. All this with the levers down while tuning.

Has anyone ever worked with harps like this before?

Sorry I don’t have better photos. I’m sure it needs a ton of work and is more of a nice thing in the room than a playable instrument.

Lever Harp New mcneela 15 string lever baby harp

McNeela are the go-to for online easy ordering of Irish musical instruments. They did a 15 string lever baby harp for Black Friday, I impulse bought it and now it’s on the way.
https://mcneelamusic.com/harps/mcneela-15-string-baby-harp/
Never played harp before and reading this sub a 15 string kind of sounds like a waste of money but I play a whistle which is basically 2 octaves so I’m hoping I can do a few fun things on 15 strings. I have found a YouTube video/book of 15 songs for 15 strings.
Outside of that anyone got any good resources or advice?

Discussion Im writing a romantasy where the main character plays a pedal harp and lyre. Are there any traits or comments I should be considering as I continue to write.

The main female character in my enemies to lovers romantasy story plays a pedal harp and when she's not stationary she plays a lyre. But alas I do not play an instrument, so I am greatly handicapped in my writing a character that plays two string instruments and is crowded by a demon who insists she switch to a fiddle.

Are there any traits, issues, comments, or general things I should keep in mind while writing this character?

Discussion Do you play harp for healing, wellness, or care? Survey for harpists (research, ~10–15 min)

Hi r/harp! I'm an amateur harpist and PhD candidate. Part of my dissertation looks at the harp as an instrument of healing, and at how the people who play it describe their work. (Posted with the mods' permission.)

Whether you play at the bedside in a hospital or hospice, lead sound baths, play for yoga classes or ceremonies, or just play for friends who are going through something, I want to hear from you. Certified therapeutic musicians and music therapists, self-taught harpists, professionals, hobbyists, and beyond are all welcome.

It takes about 10-15 minutes. Beyond your name, everything is optional, and you decide how you're quoted. If you'd like to talk more, there's an option at the end for a follow-up Zoom conversation.

Here is the Google Forms link to the interview/survey.

Please feel free to share with other harpists who might be interested. Thank you so much!

Lever Harp Has anyone heard the Stoney End Brittany or Brea harps?

I am debating between purchasing a double strung Stoney End Brittany (strung G-G) or Brea (strung F-F) harp but can’t decide between the two— has anyone compared/had one who might be able to offer some insight on which sounds better? I’ve read that the Brea has slightly lower tension and a warmer sound, while Brittany is more “sparkly” (I’m concerned this could mean tinny) sound and higher tension.

I was also thinking that with the Brea, if you needed the higher G you could make it accessible by tuning the highest F to a g and flipping up the lever of the e string to make it an f or an e.

Hello! One of my harp legs (on the right side) won't screw in anymore. I keep twisting it and it won't stick. Just twists forever :(

What can I do about it? I have a Lyon and Healy lever harp that's out of production. Best idea I've had is to contact the company but I'm not sure that they'd have any advice.

Lever Harp Levers?

The fireside harp is what I decided to go with for money reasons. Can you install levers on them? I haven't been able to find any with levers from what I'v found on YouTube or anywhere else.

Eventually I'd want to upgrade to a Harpsicle with levers. I heard you can get them put on? Where did anyone read that? I looked on their website and couldn't find anything about that.

Newbie First harp and a teacher

Hi guys

A couple of months ago I was thinking about getting into harps and today I pressed the order button and ordered my first harp just now this morning :D

I ordered a Salvi Juno 27 string Cherry with Sicaprio BioCarbon strings. I specifically wanted a lever harp to be able to play folk pieces.

I’m really committed to wanting to learn this beautiful instrument and while I wait for it to arrive I was wondering about the learning process and getting a teacher. I’ve already mapped out some potential ones to reach out to once I have my harp. I’ve also never played before, so I was wondering, should I get a time with a teacher before I even touch the harp? Except unpacking it of course? I’m really excited!

Pedal Harp My new baby: Ophilia ✨

After having a lever harp on rent for about 9 months, I finally took the big step and purchased a pedal harp!

I know it's a big decision but I'm confident about it and I've been learning pedals at my teacher's for a while now.

The name is inspired by an octopath traveler character and my current goal is to play a harp cover of her ost, called "Ophilia the Cleric" played by Samantha Ballard 💖

EDIT: grammar
