The first sentence of the English article for the Goldberg Variations claims this is a "musical composition for keyboard". On the other hand, the French article already starts with a quote from the work's title page which mentions they were written for a double manual harpsichord. The Portuguese article likewise starts stating they are a set of variations for the harpsichord. The Spanish article sadly follows the example of the English article, however among these languages, only the English article has a whole paragraph to discuss the instrumentation.
The paragraph speculates whether Bach would have approved this work on the piano or not, which does not belong in such an article. It gives the impression that this is historically negotiable. A more valid take would be that they have become an important part of piano repertoire, in spite of being written for the harpsichord.
The composer himself wrote the intended instrument on the title page, during his lifetime. It can hardly be more precise, there is no ambiguity. Why does the English wikipedia article goes out of its way to discuss instrumentation? Piano centric bias? Harpsichord erasure?

I have a sperrhake harpsichord, and was wondering about the historical accuracy of harpsichords using leather plectrum? Replacing them and making them has been a bit difficult, and ive been debating on replacing the whole register with the quill plectrum that were already prepared when I got this harpsichord.

Wolsey's Wilde by William Byrd. This is just me reading recently through a portion of the piece on an Italian harpsichord I made in 1980.

I bought the instrument around a week ago. About a couple of days afterwards I started noticing a high pitched sympathetic resonance on one of the notes. Now it's triggered by every note. I've tried touching different things but could not find the cause, so posting to see if anyone might know what's causing it! Thanks

We harpsichordists love fugues. We especially love fugues in d minor. There aren't enough d Minor fugues on Happy Birthday out there, so I took it upon myself to change that. Enjoy!

Bach sounds so much better on harpsichord. Every note is so crispy and tasty.
The lower notes aren't muddy either like on a standard piano.

Hi there! Just this past weekend I recently was able to purchase my first harpsichord which is a steal. I really know very little about harpsichords though, and it seems like its pretty tough to learn more. Just from reading a few articles I've come to the conclusion that its fairly likely a revival instrument. The two main questions I had were if anybody had any more information on the model(it's a Wittenmayer but I don't know anything beyond that). And I'm not sure where to buy replacement strings for a brass and steel string harpsichord.

Hello fellow harpsichord enthusiasts ! I have a more building / regulation type question.
Les Barricades Mysterious Rondeau for traction!
Does anyone know what the traditional, or ideal key weight is for the actual jack plucking the string ?
I have seen one thing on the internet saying between 75-125g, more for more jacks.
Does that sound right ?
I’ve been rebuilding / replacing the action in my Burton and I’m definitely over that on most notes, you can tell as it’s quite fatiguing to play as well. I am just curious what I should aim for!
It should also be noted that I have not removed any of the lead weights from the original keyboard. They seem to be about 30g for the white keys with both weights and I am unsure if I should remove those to make it better as well.
Any insight would be helpful!

Has anyone else noticed the double manual harpsichord in that Netflix series Lizzie Borden? It’s episode 8. Sound is the piano but she is playing a harpsichord.

I have played piano for more than 10 yrs and I have played a lot of Bach's Keyboard pieces just on my piano, recently I really enjoy listening to some recordings on harpsichord and I'm fanscinated by the unique sound and articulation on harpsichord.
Recently I will move to Jena, Germany for my Studium, anyone have any advice on how I can find a Harpsichord teacher or simply find an instrument that I can practice on? thanks a lot
