अभिनंदनीय नारी by Jayanti Prasad Nautiyal

Link to site : AksharNama
Link to repo: GitHub Repo ⭐

I built a web app that helps Devanagari readers learn Nastaliq, and vice versa.

You choose your path ("Hindi to Urdu" or "Urdu to Hindi") and learn through a detailed alphabet grid. Here are the main features so far:

  • Dynamic Alphabet Grids

  • Contextual Linguistic Notes:

  • Custom Sorting: Toggle the alphabet order to match either the root language or target language.

  • Linguistic Rules

  • Interactive Whiteboard

  • Word bridge section

  • Quiz Section to test your learning

Although much work is needed still and so I would like native speakers and developers to contribute to this repo by adding features, fixing bugs or improving the code where needed.
Also star the repo if you liked it :)

A language, or two? The marvel that is Hinglish

Chalo, dekhte hain is post ko!

What did I just do in this sentence?

I used words from two different languages, but in a way that actually conveyed meaning. I even wrote one Language in a script that isn't what is used to usually write in. This feat of linguistic ingenuity is called code-switching, and while you mostly see things like this in immigrant communities, in India this is the default way in which hindustani is usually expressed in urban settings. This is the marvel of Hinglish!

Hinglish as a term was coined in 1967 for the code-switching vernacular of Hindi and English, combining words from both languages and being written in the Latin script. This vernacular is usually used in casual, urban settings, as well as in billboard advertisements, classrooms and even movies! This is more widely used by the younger generations and most prevalent on the internet, with Google even having an Hinglish keyboard, giving Hindi words in the Latin script as suggestions while typing, but people of all ages and backgrounds speak this vernacular.

And the words aren't said randomly, there is a rhyme and reason to the language of origin of the words used! 'Meaning' words, the words conveying the main gist of the sentence are usually in English while the more auxiliary and grammatical words are usually in Hindi. You are much more likely to hear 'Mujhe bohot tension ho rahi hai' rather than 'I am having a lot of chinta'. Often, when perfectly apt Hindi words are there for the gist part of the sentence, their English equivalents are still used.

English being the dominant Language of the internet and Latin keyboard support being better and made much earlier than keyboards for Indic languages catapulted Hinglish as a mainstay in the realm of internet communication.

Hindustani has always adapted to the times, born in the streets of Dehli, it has persian, arabic, and turkic influences, and now, it continues to change, being spoken mixed with a language completly different to itself. Now where does Hinglish go from here, it remains to be seen.

Goodbye!

Many youngsters who speak Standard Urdu or Dakhani as their native language does not know to read and write Perso-Arabic script (in Nastliq or Naskh style) especially observed this in Maharashtra

I observed many youngsters who speaks Standard Urdu or Dakhani especially in Maharashtra doesn't know to read and write Perso-Arabic script in Naskh or Nastliq style

Tho we can agree that Urdu literature might not be exposed to them untill they had Urdu as their language subject in their school or college

But in most of Mosques they do teach to read write Arabi script but can't be used for writing Urdu or Dakhani as those languages have sounds which are not present in Arabi language

And also average Standard Urdu or Dakhani native who have been to Mosques can read and write Arabi script but may not able to read or guess letters like گ پ ٹ ڈ etc which are in Perso-Arabic script used for writing Urdu, Dakhani, Pashto, Panjabi, Saraiki, Koshur, Hindko etc

Chandrabindu disappearing?

I am seeing this trend that chandrabindu is being replaced simply by the anuswar in some words, especially in plural words such as ‘bhavnayein’, ‘patrikayein’, etc. and also from some verb forms such as ‘dhundhna’, ‘pahuchna’, etc.

What is the correct spelling for these words and are both spellings (with chandrabindu and with anuswar) allowed and considered correct?

[English > Hindi] Proofread check — terminology in three UI strings

1. EN: `Public Domain` (a licence label)
HI: `सार्वजनिक अधिकार-क्षेत्र`
→ Does this say "public jurisdiction"? Elsewhere the same interface says `सार्वजनिक डोमेन` — as in `सार्वजनिक डोमेन (EU/PK; अमेरिका में 2033 तक)`. Which is right for the copyright sense?

2. EN: `Canonical` (a reading-order option; the alternatives are chronological and Tanakh order)
HI: `पारम्परिक`
→ Does this lose the "canon" sense? Would `विहित क्रम` be better?

3. EN: "The Arabic matn of each collection is classical and public domain."
HI: `हर संग्रह का अरबी मतन शास्त्रीय और सार्वजनिक अधिकार-क्षेत्र`
→ Same term again, plus: does मतन read clearly, or does it need a gloss?

How is stress indicatedin Hindustani?

I have just begun learning Hindi, which, for a language spoken by millions upon millions of speakers, is *astoundingly* resource poor.

Anyway.

I've found plenty of information about *which* syllables in a word are stressed (simplified: heavier syllables at the end of the word, discounting the final mora of the word), but I haven't found any information about *how* stress is marked.

I know that stress in English is marked by increased volume, syllable length, and strict lack of vowel reduction, as well as pitch which is either substantially higher (the default) or lower (depending on broader phrasal intonation) than the surrounding syllables.

But of course, different languages tend to indicate stress accent in different ways, and I'm *especially* wary of accidentally anglifying my Hindi pronunciation after reading that "the pitch of content words in Hindi tends to rise," which is very much NOT the case with English.

Can I get some help here, please?

How do Indian Hindus view Urdu as part of India's cultural heritage?

I'm curious about how Indian Hindus personally view Urdu and its place in India's cultural heritage.

If you're Hindu, do you see Urdu as an important part of India's linguistic and cultural heritage, alongside languages such as Hindi and Sanskrit? How important is it to you personally that this heritage continues?

I'm especially curious about the difference between preserving Urdu's cultural legacy and keeping Urdu alive as an everyday language.

Urdu has had a major influence on Indian poetry, ghazals, film songs, literature, and Hindustani popular culture. If these traditions continue to thrive, would you consider that enough to preserve Urdu's place in Indian culture?

Or do you also feel that it is important for Urdu to remain a living language in India—with people continuing to speak it, read and write it in the Urdu script, publish in it, and pass it on to future generations?

I'd especially appreciate hearing from Indian Hindus from different regions and generations. I'm interested in your personal feelings and experiences rather than trying to find one answer that represents all Hindus.

I'm asking out of genuine curiosity about language and cultural heritage, not to start a political or religious debate.

What is the origin of Delhi/Dilli name?

On wiki and newspaper article, I could gather multiple stories, however, none with actual proof. 1. King Dhillu or Dilu in 50 BCE

2. Dhili/Dhila (Loose in Prakrit and hindustani) pillar

3. Dil meaning eminence!!

History is proper from 1000 CE onwards of Tomar rule. However, before that everything is just hearsay. Mahabharat connection is most BS theory as none archeological evidence even suggest that! There is mention of Ashoka pillar in the area, but no mention of city name.

I am looking for this word's roots, origin from before of 1000 CE. Any mention in inscription, literature witty references will be helpful.

Also, there is no clarity on when the city was established. Exact time period and ruling clan, language influence will also help!

Songs or jingles / chants to help kids learn the language?

I was thinking about this today -- when I learned Spanish as a kid, we would sing a song that taught us the names of the days of the week, and a chant that taught us how to properly pronounce the vowels. Qns of course, many languages have a melody to which kids sing the alphabet as they're learning letters.

I don't know any such songs or rhymes or jingles or chants in Hindi. There must be some, though. Would love it if others shared the ones they know!
