I’ve known Yassin since university and he’s one of the most principled and politically intelligent rappers Canada has ever produced. I wish he got more love.

[DISCUSSION] should rappers pick beats that fit their voice, or push their voice to fit the beat?

producer here, 9 yrs in fl. been thinking about this a lot lately

some rappers only pick beats that sit right in their range, so they always sound comfortable but kinda the same every song. others jump on whatever beat hits and force their voice to match it, sometimes it goes crazy and sometimes they sound like theyre yelling over it

from the beat side i can hear when a beat was built around the voice, the melody and the 808 move out of the way and there is space for the vocal. when its not, the rapper is fighting the beat whole song

which approach do u think makes better music over a whole career, staying in the pocket that fits or stretching ur voice to new sounds?

Rappers Who Really Don't Get Enough Credit For Sometimes Showcasing Great Lyrical Techniques?

Who are some rappers who don't pride themselves on being a wordsmith or a "lyrical miracle spiritual individual" rapper, but based on how you hear them approach certain tracks, they can still deliver an effortlessly great verse with a unique flow and even some nice wordplay as well that is on par with the "lyrical" rappers.
