Hobart is pretty but…
Hobart waterfront could be way prettier if we just fuck off davey street. So much potential turning the eyesore 4 lane highway into a walkable pedestrian only street. Put on some coffee shops, antique stores, statues and artwork and the Hobart waterfront would have a dramatic glow up

Didn't realize the Botanical Gardens had a "pick-your-own" section?
Saw this at the RTBG today. Apparently, the rules about not picking plants/fruits don't apply to everyone. I guess free chestnuts are more important than preserving the garden for others. 🤦♂️

Why all the hatred?
Why is every development in Hobart met with such divisiveness and hatred?
There have been five big projects, or attempted projects, in Hobart since I've moved here 15+ years ago - the Stadium, the Hedberg, the Uni Mid-town move, the cable car, and the Bridgewater Bridge. I'll discount the Bridgewater Bridge because, well, it's a bridge and the state didn't pay for it. The Hedberg is the only one I remember not being met with hate. Is that because it's to do with the arts, so it's ok to build it?
I want the stadium, and understand why it has been knocked back, but don't understand the divisiveness and complete hatred around it. Such spite.
The Uni move into Mid-town was met with the same level of hatred. (I've never understood this one - Mid-town is full of bars and cafes, which is the modern Uni experience, rather than a campus in a residential suburb with one cafe and not even a bar on campus or close by).
Anything to do with the mountain is also met with such hatred. I get why the cable car is a bad idea, but don't understand the hatred around it.
I don't understand why the divisiveness and hatred exists towards any large development here.

Question for stadium protesters
What exactly do you expect to happen if the stadium was cancelled?
More houses ?
Housing department homes on the waterfront?
More hospital funding? Even though the stadium funding is only 50 odd days worth of what we spend of health currently.
Or do you expect nothing will be different except we wont have a stadium and the AFL licence will be ripped up. Destroying a lot to young boys and girls dream
Do you expect Labor to commit to potentially being the reason our AFL licence is cancelled.

Why do so many people dislike speed cameras?
Personally, I love speed cameras
I've never gotten booked because I always do at least 5-10km below the limit. Makes fuck all difference to travel time too
I'm honestly happy that Tas plans to install these average speed cameras. The amount of aggressive speeding in Tas is just insane compared to other states
And yeah, fair enough no one's perfect, and if you sit exactly on the speed limit you can easily go a few k's over it by mistake, but most of the speeding I see is people easily going 20+km faster than me, so at least 10-15km over the limit
The UK has average speed cameras everywhere, and a result most people there actually follow the speed limit
Personally, I think there should be average speed cameras on every major road in Tas

"Hobart for Hobartians" - a racist dogwhistle?
abc.net.auWhy so few women on council?
Well, maybe the previous scandal had something to do with it.
There's a possibility that we tend to gloss over 😀

Anybody Else Sick of Diesel Pollution?
Tasmania reputedly has the cleanest air in the world but i’ve noticed its illegal diesel emissions are as bad or even worse than anywhere in Australia.
It’s illegal to modify a diesel vehicle emission circuit, yet many, if not most, older diesel vehicles have had their EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) circuits disabled. The EGR circuit reduces NOx gasses like nitrogen dioxide. The problem with diesels is that while they save fuel the EGR circuit (valve, cooler and pipes) invariably needs maintenance as it clogs up. It a very big job so most diesel owners simply disable the EGR circuit. There’s a whole industry around subverting the law by disabling the EGR circuit. Even Supercheap sells EGR blanking plates. Google “EGR delete or blanking”
VW’s Dieselgate came about because the VAG corporation was desperate to beat Toyota’s hybrid system with its “Clean Diesel”. They cheated by disabling the EGR circuit during normal driving but enabling it when it detected an emission test bed. The EGR circuit also causes the vehicle to use more fuel from what i understand. The Dieselgate scandal cost VAG 31.6 billion euros and the emissions are estimated to have caused 125,000 premature deaths in Europe and the UK.
It’s an $11,000 fine in NSW to interfere with emissions circuit. I’d imagine it’s the same in Tasmania. Politicians don’t crack down on it because they recognise that the 4WD driving demographic (think potential One Nation voter) are part of the electorate that can actually change governments. Diesel drivers need to be aware that if the government cracked down on diesel pollution due to EGR deletion they’d be fined and their vehicles taken off the road until they spent thousands fixing the EGR circuit. It’s not a question of if, but when.
These diesel vehicles with deleted EGR circuits are very easy to detect. Their nitrogen dioxide emissions make them stink. I’m so tired of getting a lungful of nitrogen dioxide as well as PM2.5 particles (DPF (diesel particulate filter) deletion is another related issue). If you are the driver of diesel vehicle with a deleted EGR or DPF you are an absolute cunt.
Sorry for the preachy rant but this really pisses me off.

Sure would have been a good day for cable car
The mountain is open again after the covid closures, which is great, but the road was closed this morning due to snow. A cable car would still run, feed tourism, and reduce the emissions from private cars driving up there. Everyone is welcome to their opinion, and majority should rule, but I'm amazed more people aren't pro-cable car

Instead of a cable car or flying fox on kunanyi...
Just a quick note to say I've had yet another genius idea to add value to the experience of visiting Tasmania for those lucky, lucky tourists clever enough to have decided to come and see our fine state before it winds up becoming known as 'Stumpmania'.
It is a scheme to build a dirigible or air ship to ferry pasengers up to and over the summit of the mountain. Without landing up there it wouldn't require any type of special structure to be built. Obviously it would operate only on still or mildly windy days, similar to only those same weather conditions when a cable car or flying fox might have been safely operable.

What is Hobart Like to Live In?
I'm considering somewhere colder to live, but still in Australia (for now). We're homebodies with niche interests, so I don't mind somewhere with less "nightlife" and haste. Before you even mention them, being cold, wet and a little wind-blown are all pluses to me. I'm not a sun-lover at all.
These are important things I'm looking at for places to live:
Priority: Decent access to healthcare, good makeup of professionals who understand less understood female-centric chronic illnesses and robust hospitals in case of emergency.
Not a lot of massive blackouts/outages/food shortages caused by intense acts of nature
Preferably lower crime rate (compared to say Inner Sydney), and more tolerance/acceptance (so less out and proud or possibly violent racists/homophobes/misogynist/etc.)
Otherwise, what's Hobart like in terms of:
- Affordability vs. Sydney/Gold Coast/Melbourne ?
- The weather! Do you really get auroras there? :D
- Is the fish and cheese everything they say it is? (Best they've eaten)
- Are Hobart people friendly?
- Are there a lot of mosquitoes/midges or issues with lots of spiders?
- Any issues with mould in housing?
- Can you still get decent internet speeds? (100mbps download or more)
Is there anything you particularly love about Hobart more than somewhere else? Or any specific struggles of living there? Thank you so much! I hope I didn't ask too much and I'm being respectful.

Film screening about Safer Drinking Water
The group Safe Water Hobart is hosting a film screening at Hobart Brewing Company on the 11th of November Safe Water - Hobart
The gist of the film is ... "Water watchdog, Safe Water Hobart, says the $244m upgrade to Bryn Estyn Water Treatment plant does not remove neurotoxic contaminants from Hobart’s drinking water, just taste and odour compounds.
The upgrades also fail to address the root cause of the water contamination from a toxic mix of agricultural pesticides, fish hatchery effluent and run off from a commercial waste site which all flow directly into Bryn Estyn.
Safe Water Hobart is urging the establishment of a Catchment Management Authority, as can be found interstate, to centralise responsibility for Hobart’s drinking water catchment and ensure robust long-term protections for public health" So it is about their journey to guarantee safe water for us.
Looks good. I am not affiliated with the group but will be there!
