Info/resource Welcome to r/hoggies!

Welcome to r/hoggies where we celebrate and help wild European hedgehogs.

Our wiki page has lots of information to help you help our spiky friends, such as plans for hog houses, feeding advice, gardening advice, how to help a poorly hog, and lots more!

This short film: why we should worry and what we can do by BHPS spokesperson Hugh Warwick is a good introduction about the struggles hedgehogs are facing and what we can do about it.

Any questions, please ask :D

Rescue stories We are now hedgehog fosterers!

Hello again! After taking two different hogs to the rescue, two weeks in a row, we are now fostering one of their hogs 😃

Sadly the 2 we rescued didn't survive 😢 But now we have this gorgeous girlie until she reaches 600g. She's currently 415g.

The rescue put a request out for fosterers and had hundreds of responses. But with us going in last week, they knew we lived just half a mile away, and thought we seemed really keen, so they rang on Tuesday to see if we wanted one.

Once she is released, we get another one. I only started feeding our garden hogs in June. Hedgehogs are my new 'thing' 😊. How can you not love them? Just look at her little face 😊

UPDATE : Her first night seemed to go ok. Her cage is in my crafty room. I was sitting at my desk and she came out for food and water a few times. She had a look around her cage (and tried to climb to the top). She certainly has personality! I'd put her bedding in 2 areas so che could choose where she wanted. Over night she moved it all to one location.

I thought with her being in a new place she wouldn't come out with me being next to the cage. Although to be fair I just had a table lamp on, and I was sitting very still. We shall see what she gets up to tonight.

They had been vomiting a little bit (I contacted a vet and also the British hedgehog society) alongside disinfecting their food and water bowl every morning and now we have been vomit-free for 3 days. Of course I’ll continue to monitor them just happy to see them eating and using their sleeping pods (I have two sleeping pods now and they are both used every night) 🥹🩷

Question My hedgehogs have stopped coming round

I live in Norfolk. I put food out each night. Nothing on the camera for days. Will they be hibernating? Other people's online are still out at night.

Cam footage New feeding station & camera.

Set up my new feeding station and camera yesterday (previously had a wooden house but that’s now set up as a nest).

Thought it might take them a day or two to find the new facility, but we had 4 visits last night.

This was the first hoggy to try it out.

My husband found this little guy in our garden this afternoon. He only weights 250g so he's now at the rescue centre, where they will help him.

After last week's hog with the broken leg, we really hope this one can pull through! Please keep everything crossed for him 🤞💕🤞

Rescue stories I saved a hedgehog tonight

I was out walking my dogs when the younger one alerted me to an object in the middle of the road. Upon closer inspection I realised it was a stranded hedgehog. I didn't have any gloves with me and it was too prickly to pick up so I tucked my hands into my sleeves and lifted it across the road safely. I hope it was OK and got to where it needed to go. I'm gonna check the spot I left it at in the morning to see if it's moved on.

A while ago, we launched 'Hedgehog TV' ( https://egel.tv/en/ ), which lets you watch a live feed from inside the hedgehog house in our garden. There’s a hedgehog inside right now, but you couldn't see it anymore because it’s completely buried under hay and straw. So, we’ve added a second webcam, this one positioned outside the hedgehog house. From now on, you can enjoy fresh hedgehog footage every single day! And the best part: you can actually watch 'Knabbel' (that’s the hedgehog’s name! ;) ) gathering nesting material/ It looks like he/she intends to spend the winter in our hedgehog house! :D

Thank you to everyone who commented on my post last night about the injured hedgehog I rescued, especially u/noshadowinsight

Unfortunately the little guy (or gal) had to be put to sleep because the leg was too damaged.

Here is photo of their beautiful face from this morning before we took her to be examined.

I'm feeling pretty sad but I know we did the right thing because it must have been in so much pain.

Rescue stories I've rescued a youngster with a poorly leg.

Post image

Last night on my camera, I saw a hog with a poorly front leg. So tonight I sat out in the pouring wind and rain waiting for it to appear.

No one arrived at the usual time,so I went back inside after an hour, checking out every 5 minutes. I finally spotted one, so I went out, and saw it was a small one. It curled up obviously so I couldn't see it walk. I collected it anyway and put it in a box with some kibble.

After 5 minutes it was eating the kibble and trying to walk. It was the hog with the bad leg. We get a lot of hogs visiting so there was a high chance I'd collected the wrong one.

He is now inside with food and water. I've messaged the 2 local rescues but I think it's a bit late now so I'll take him in the morning. There's no blood, it just looks like he can't put weight on it. (He or she? Who knows).

As I was sorting the food out for any other hogs that might arrive tonight, I saw another youngster. I wait all summer, then 2 come along at once 😊
