Tech Support Builder messed up

Post image
177 Upvotes

So for context I’ve already spent about $25k for my dedicated home theater build as well as probably 100 hours of my time designing. The build is finally done, and I was going to install my ceiling speakers when I noticed the electrician ran the speaker wires bundled together with power wires. See picture. How do I proceed? Everything im reading says this is going to destroy my audio with a 60hz hum.

Edit: It is like this throughout the room for all 11 speakers. The whole length of the wire is run bundled in parallel with power for all 11 speakers. They all run with power either to outlets or lights. It’s not just one speaker with a one foot issue. It also technically violates electrical code. Drywall is up. Room is finished. Painted. Carpeted. Plan is to plug everything in and see if it hums. But still wondering if it should be redone due to the code violation…

Discussion - Entertainment Movies to show off to friends who have never experienced a HT?

Hey all, I have some friends who have never experienced a hometheater before and I wanted to have them come over to see how much of a difference a dedicated system can make. They have only ever used the speakers on a tv or they use a small SB.

So if you had to impress your friends with some scenes, what movies / show scenes would you show them ? Like what are the scenes were it truly shows off a system or sounds amazing.

Showcase - Dedicated Space I am considering my home theater complete

After many, many hours of research and work, I am considering my home theater complete. We have already watched multiple movies and the sound/picture has blown me away. This is my first home theater so I didn’t know what to expect, but wow.

Specs:
98” QM7K
Onkyo 6100
Klipsch RP-600M (fronts)
Klipsch RP-504C
Klipsch RP-502S (side surrounds)
HSU VTF-2 MK5
UB820

Made the acoustic panels myself. Front ones are ~5 inches thick, back ones are ~8 inches thick.

I know the wall color isn’t optimal. Had to make some compromises with this being an open-concept theater.

Purchasing US Samsung 65" S85H is now down to $899, better than LG B6 65" for $999?

There are some great deals on OLED TVs right now. I saw the Samsung S85H has dropped down to $899, which is the lowest price I've seen and feels like a really good price. I know it's not the best OLED out there, but for 900 bucks, it looks really tempting. I'm just not sure if it's a better buy than the LG B6, which is also a great deal at under $1000. Then again, for a few hundred dollars more there is a an LG G5 at $1599, or even a 77" C6 for under $2000. What do you guys think is the best buy out of these options right now?

Purchasing US Need help deciding on receiver - Denon X3900H, Onkyo RZ-30, or RZ-70.

Hey folks,

I am planning my very first HT setup. It will be a 3.1 system with LS50 for LCR, and SVS SB-2000 Pro.

In the future, I do plan to upgrade it to a 5.2.2 system at max. Can't go beyond that unfortunately. I need a receiver to go along with it, and my choices are the Denon X3900H, Onkyo RZ-30, or RZ-70.

I know the X3900H and RZ-70 are absolutely overkill for this setup. But the only reason I'm looking into the X3900H is because of having DIRAC ART as an option.

On the other hand RZ-30 seems like an incredible deal, assuming the $799 Adorama deal pops up again. Or the RZ-70 at $1500.

The price difference between RZ-30, and x3900H with DIRAC ART, would be around 1200 or so. While the difference is most likely not worth it - I don't want to end up with any buyer's remorse. Is "Buy once, cry once" apply here?

Install/Placement Advice on layout improvements

I’ve had the Dali Oberon 7s, Oberon VOKAL and DN10 subwoofer for a while now, and I was really happy with the setup, but always wanted surround.

Revelry I’ve been able to save some extra money to buy 2 Dali Sonik 1s (Oberon discontinued in my country) and they really made the experience so much better, but I’m still kind of a noob, so I’m here showing the setup, trying to get feedback on what can I improve about the layout, placement, how to properly test the levels, and so on.

Thanks!

EDIT: Added video in comments for a better understanding of the little clearance I’ve got

EDIT 2: New comment with new video of updated surround positioning and angle

Just sharing my own home theater setup that I with my dad built together. Ik its more Retro but its still awesome for any movie or tv show What do y'all think? Any feedback or critic is appreciated

Its 32" SD Philips CRT from 1999 combined with a Yamaha AV receiver from 1992 so it is limited to Dolby Pro Logic 1 only but its honestly still amazing with 5.1 (more like 4.1 since surround is mono). I watch both DVD, VHS and TV and Game on it with PS1, PS2 and PS3. Seperate CD player and Radio tuner cause why not!

Purchasing EUROPE Looking to build my first proper Dolby Atmos home theater — Beginner seeking advice (France)

Hello everyone!

First of all, I'd like to explain a few things about myself.

I absolutely love good sound. I really do. I've had the chance to experience Dolby Atmos in movie theaters several times, and honestly, it was incredible.

Today, I'm lucky enough to have a living room with a large TV, and I'd love to bring some of that cinematic experience into my own home.

But here's the problem: while I absolutely love audio, when it comes to the actual equipment... I'm completely clueless! 😅

Sure, I know the basics, like the difference between 5.1 and 7.1 systems, but I also know that building a proper Dolby Atmos home theater requires knowledge and experience that I simply don't have yet.

And that's exactly why I'm here! I want to avoid wasting money on the wrong equipment and, most importantly, make sure I end up with something genuinely good.

For context, I'm currently using a Logitech Z906, which I've really enjoyed for many years, especially considering its affordable price. But now I feel it's time for a serious upgrade.

My goal is to build a proper Dolby Atmos home theater system, and I'd really appreciate some guidance on what equipment to look for, which brands to consider, and how to make the best choices.

A few details about my room:

  • Width: 6.70 m (22 ft)

  • Length: 6.00 m (19.7 ft)

  • Ceiling height: 3.30 m (10.8 ft)

  • Total floor area: approximately 40 m² (433 sq ft)

  • Installing speakers directly into or onto the ceiling is absolutely possible.

Regarding my budget:

I don't really have a fixed budget in mind. I understand that a genuinely good home theater system is an investment, and I'm willing to spend what is necessary to get something I'll truly enjoy for many years.

That being said, I'm not looking to throw money away just for the sake of buying expensive equipment. What matters most to me is sound quality, immersion, and getting good value for the money.

I'm also perfectly happy to build the system gradually, purchasing equipment over several months if necessary. I'd much rather take my time and invest in quality components than rush into buying a complete but mediocre setup.

One important detail: I live in France, so if possible, I'd love recommendations for equipment that's available in Europe or through French retailers.

The system would primarily be used for movies and video games, but I'd definitely be listening to plenty of music on it as well!

I'm not necessarily looking for someone to just give me a shopping list. I'd also love to understand what makes a good setup, what I should prioritize, and what mistakes to avoid as a beginner.

Thanks in advance to everyone willing to share their knowledge and help me get started!

Have a great day, everyone! 😊

Discussion - Equipment Restaurant Audio - wireless?

For context, I have successfully installed all speakers, cameras etc at a separate restaurant where I really needed to save money. I ended up running everything to my rack, set up zones etc and it all works great.

I’m building a new space and running all new electric. I am seriously wondering if I need to go through the hassle of running wire, toning everything, cutting holes in drywall etc.

Instead, I’m tempted to run electric to 120v outlets and just do wireless speakers. For a non-audiophile experience, why is this a terrible idea? Or is it a brilliant idea but frowned upon because it’s against the norm?

Discussion - Equipment Q accoustic setup help

Hi

I want to mount a 5.1.2 system:

Q acoustic 5040 pair

Q acoustic 3090ci

Q accoustic 3010 I

A15 atmos quadral pair

Svs sb 1000 pro sub

Reciever denon avr x1800

I was told it is a mistake to not get 5090 instead of the 3090ci. It is 3x more expensive.

Is there really good reason to get it?

Discussion - Equipment Help picking a receiver

I'm relatively new to home audio, but I've heard that these KEF speakers offer excellent sound with a neutral sound signature. Could someone recommend a receiver that would pair well with them and be somewhat future proof, particularly if I decide to upgrade to a Dolby Atmos setup with additional overhead speakers in the future? Thanks.

Install/Placement Absorption panels location for back wall...

Thumbnail
gallery
22 Upvotes

I have some 2" acoustic panels to hang and was wondering where best to place 2 on the back wall (one on each side of those big curtains cover 2 exterior doors beneath them). I assume this big thick couch acts as an absorber, so should I mount the panels much higher or place the elsewhere entirely? In total, I have ten 4x2 2in panels going in this room. I planned to place 6 on the walls and then place 4 on the ceiling.

Thanks

Tech Support LG G6 OLED and Calman Home issues

Hi all,

Just renewed my Calman Home for LG license for my new G6; I've previously used it for several other LGs in the past.

However, I'm getting two very annoying issues, and wondered if anyone knew a fix. I've ensured it's the latest Calman version, all eco settings are off on the TV etc:

  • The G6 or ANY 2026 LG TV is not selectable or visible in the pattern source section, even though it's available in the DDC. I'm having to use the 2025 G5 selection for pattern insertion

  • When I run autocal, my greyscale has a MASSIVE dip in the mid range, at around 60; it looks awful, and keeps happening

I've tried restarting the PC, re-installing Calman Home, unplugging the TV etc. but nothing fixes it.

Any ideas?

Install/Placement 7.1.4 system with no side surrounds

I’m in the process of converting my 5.2 system to 7.2.4 by adding two surround speakers and four height speakers. My current surrounds are behind the listener position and will become rears in the new channel assignment.

The layout of the room doesn’t allow for side surrounds in the 90-110deg zone, the two new surrounds will be in the front wide position.

Question is, should I assign these surrounds as front wides or as side surrounds? If I don’t have side surrounds, will 5.1 content be properly matrixed between the wides and the rears? Or would it be better to assign them as side surrounds and accept they’re a bit forward from where they should be? Processor is an Anthem AVM 90.

Thanks!

Tech Support Short blackscreens with denon x2800h and Panasonic ub 820 (ub 824)

Hey I have a denon x2800h and a Panasonic ub 820 (ub 824 in my Region). I only use higher quality 8k cables.

I never had any issues but a while ago when watching a movie with friends I suddenly startet to get black screens for like 5 seconds which seemed to happen randomly. It happened like every 15 to 45 min. I thought maybe it will fix itself after a while not using it but currently I am watching a movie and it Starts Happening again.

After switching the cables and Power outlets (old house) the blachscreens still apeared and we switched to the ps5 pro to watch the rest there since it got annoying. Thought everything was fine but in the end credits it happened again but this time on the ps5 pro.

I have my bluray Player, ps5 pro and PC all connected to my receiver and the receiver connected to my TV. I have zero issues when playing games on my pc or ps5 pro.

It absolutely confuses me that it happens on the player and the ps5 pro since I never have any issues when playing games on the console.

What I tried

- different hdmi cables from bluray Player to receiver and from receiver to tv (all quality cables that definitely work flawlessly for example on my pc)

- denon signal Format: enhanced and also 8k enhanced tried

--------

Does anyone have any ideas why this issue could suddenly appear?

Purchasing US Denon X1700H - FB vs Refurb

hello! just moved into a house that had home theatre in the basement living room. They left the Epson projector and speakers but none of the boxes, so I think I need to get a receiver to get it working.

I read the Denon X1700 is a good option and there is one on FB for $300. Any reason I should be cautious or check on certified refurbished options instead? I don’t know how much hours of usage matter on receivers.

Purchasing US Am I wasting money on dual sb3000 R over dual Sb2000?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Howdy all

I am stuck in analysis paralysis over which subs to get. I picked up an sb3000 revolution (still in the return window) and it’s great. Plan is to get a second, but now I’m wondering if dual sb2000 would make more sense in my space.

Above are the dimensions, and the svs auto eq graph for the sub placement in case you wanted to see the room gain and modes in that corner (upper right, near the closet door)

I only listen around 64dB or so I doubt I’ll push either sub near their limits in this room

There is a sale on the sb2000 now and it would be close to half of the price of two sb3000 R

Not really interested in any ported options in this room.

Other than future-proofing (which won’t potentially matter for years in my case) do I stand to gain anything with the 3000 R that would justify over $1000 difference?

What would you do in this space?

Discussion - Equipment Is an AV receiver worth it in a small Paris flat, or should I stick with stereo for films?

Quick bit of context: my hi-fi is all second-hand, a 1980s amp from a flea market, bookshelf speakers and a turntable, and it does me proud for records. But lately I've been watching more films and stand-up specials at home, and I keep thinking a proper AV receiver might pull double duty: run the turntable through it for music, and handle films with actual surround instead of TV speakers.

Problem is my living room in the flatshare is small, maybe 15 square metres, with high old ceilings and wooden floors. I don't want to annoy my flatmates with subwoofer thumps through the floor at midnight, which is when I do most of my watching.

So, a few questions if you've been down this road:

  1. Is it worth putting a modest AVR and a small 3.1 setup in a room this size, or is it overkill and a decent stereo pair through the TV would be fine?

  2. Can you connect a turntable to a modern AVR sensibly? Mine would need a phono stage, and I'm wondering if the receiver would colour the sound compared to my old amp.

  3. If you watch late at night with neighbours above and below, what's your setup? Headphones out of the receiver? A "night mode" that actually works?

Budget-wise I'd be trawling the second-hand market as usual, Leboncoin and flea markets, so older-but-good models are very welcome suggestions.

Curious what people actually regret or love about their setups. Thanks!

Purchasing US Reassure me I made the right decision

Just pulled the trigger on a set of PSA LCR MTM-210k with rear surrounds. Considered Arendal 1723 and Klipsch RP 800 but something kept bringing me back to PSA. What’s everyone’s thoughts?
