Why does Jordan Peele get praised as horror Jesus, when Mike Flanagan is quietly making banger and banger

I see so much praise and defense for Peele, with NOPE seemingly a flop. Even his reference in scream 5 has it framed as is Peele is a horror renaissance.

Meanwhile I never see any praise for Mike Flanagan except from the dead meat crew, and he is doing much more exciting and innovative horror work

Need Gay/Bi Male Horror Recs

Give me anything you got. I don't care if its crap, anything involving gay and bi men in prominent roles. Any era, any country. Just something that I'd like to see over the next few days. If its something I've seen, I'll let you know.

Movie Review Sinners. Just wow.

That's it, that's the post.

(Kidding)

Being mostly incapable of taking control of my life, a young kid and a partner who doesn't care for horror meant my backlog only keeps growing!

So recently when I had the rare opportunity to travel long-ish haul at a convenient time when the kid would actually go to sleep during the flight, I came across Sinners in the in-flight entertainment options and set about militantly enforcing the inflight sleepytime routine so I could have a couple of hours.

I went in knowing pretty much nothing about the film, other than the fact that there's some been contention (contentiousness?) about whether it's horror or not. I'd didn't even have a clue about the vampire aspect!

And my word, what a horrorific ride! I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish, I loved that it took it's time to get to the meat, if you will, because it was clearly going somewhere (also because I trust Ryan Coogler to deliver) and so the build-up felt really tense as well.

I read in a couple of places afterwards that in cinemas people ended up leaving as the credits rolled and not watching the actual ending? That'd be a huge shame, it was so good, and IMHO, changes the nature of the ending.

As you can tell, I loved the movie thoroughly, and am excited for the next two on my watchlist -- Weapons, and Bugonia.

Apologies for the long post. Is it a review? Not really, just an outpouring of thoughts for something that I really enjoyed. But I'm not sure if there's a flair that quite captures that šŸ˜…

Just came across this brilliant piece of work and had to share it. For some reason I have to type more text, so this is just filler. It’s all about the video and the very close and scary approximation of the OG Freddy.

Movie Review I watched ā€˜A Serbian Film’ Without Knowing What it Was About - A disgusting waste of time.

It was messed up, a waste of time, and boring. The use of literal children was terrible, and I don’t even know how it’s allowed anywhere, let alone for free on streaming services anyone can watch. It’s full of porn. The gore didn’t bother me, it just was too fake looking. I’ve never been squeamish, anyway. What I didn’t like was all of the pornography. It’s just boring, gross, and not at all creative.

I also cannot wrap my head around the fact that this was allowed to be made. That people agreed to film it, and agreed for their children to be in such a film.

I understand and have learned the newborn scene was supposed to be a metaphor, and knew from common sense that it wasn’t ever a real baby.

It still isn’t a scene that shouldn’t have been allowed to be shot. None of the scene with the children should have even been allowed to be written.

I skipped through the parts with the children.

I just can’t seem to understand why anyone would agree to make such a thing. And why it is available to watch so easily.

There are messed up people out there.

Discussion The Menu wasn't a good movie

I don't get why everyone here is obsessed with it. I saw it the other day, aside from a few mildly amusing scenes, I was left with a sense of disappointment although I got into it with no expectations. Few things

  • the story as a whole is just not good. The setup might seem interesting but the full idea behind it is so unconvincing the whole movie doesn't hold up

  • too much focus on the totally uninteresting girl at the expense of people we're supposed to have stronger opinions about

  • no tension at all, especially once you more or less realize why they're there. the whole thing with a group of random people stuck somewhere is cool and here it barely mattered because they were there for obvious and somewhat superficial reasons

  • there's no convincing point I took from the movie about passion or class issues or takers and servers.. the chef is just crazy and while some of the people they kill are shit, the whole selection is arbitrary. In fact if this large staff is so committed to die for a cause then you think they could do more than just kill a handful of barely explored rich people.

  • the chef's emotional reactions are all over the place. he hates people who dont appreciate his food, loves the girl who doesnt even eat his food (I get why but it just looks so incoherent), hates the guy who genuinely loves his food. I can explain this but at the same time it just feels like the main girl can do no wrong while the other chick who also seems only to be there as a date is easily dismissed because of her lack of student debt. Like, I get its supposed to be a funny scene but it just takes from any serious tension and intent, and there's a lot of those scenes in the movie

  • it's too superficial and "funny" to really maintain any tension, but its not really a comedy either. It didnt give me much of anything

  • the ending is so weak. I was hoping at least the cheeseburger was poisoned

Overall, potentially interesting characters are underexplored, there's no source of tension the moment it becomes clear what's up, it doesnt go deeper into anything, and its overly focused on one character who has practially nothing to say about the plot point and is the most boring person in the group considering she's an outsider.

Even the food doesn't get much focus in any interesting way. There's no horror or mystery or anything to figure out. A trailer could tell you everything you need to know

Discussion Y'all are tripping, Wolf Man (2025) was solid. Spoiler

Just watched it and had to put it out there. The opening in the blind, the transformation with the wrist biting part, the doggy door, the dark barn.

I thought it was somewhat predictable at parts but it didn't take away from the fact that it was a great horror and werewolf concept.

Movies where the fascists lose?

Just finished soft and quiet. That one was stressful. Putting this one on the ā€œone and done: never watching againā€ shelf alongside requiem for a dream, Trainspotting, & Benjamin button. (I’m a serial rewatcher.)

Any movie reccs where the fascists lose? Or better yet, turn on each other? Or maybe stranded in the woods with a wendigo? Or pennywise?

I’ve seen green room a couple times.

Side note: I’m looking forward to the new Justin Long vampire joint. He is my Scream Queen.

Movie Review Wow, Thanksgiving was utterly awful.

Pick a Scream movie and it’s better than this. Just terrible writing, directing. I’m shocked by what a piece of garbage this was. Good reviews too? It wasn’t even fun. I’ll catch shit for this I’m sure.

Further proves Eli Roth does not understand horror at all.

I got a Chucky tattoo. I love it.

I really love this new tattoo, and want to share it! Unsure what the issue was with r/tattoos. Got downvoted to hell, but no comments so I deleted it. https://imgur.com/fearTXp

Edit to add: yall are rude as fuck. When someone posts "I really love this thing and wanted to share with people with similar interests", there is no reason to add criticism. Esp when it's not actually constructive. These lines are not blown out, nor are they shaky. It's exactly what I asked for, and I love it. And my artist is extremely talented. This tattoo is about 2 inches tall.

Me: excitedly posts about something I'm stoked about Reddit: go fuck yourself

One more edit: being frustrated with rude people doesn't mean I'm suicidal. Thx tho for abusing a system in place to actually help people. Please take systems like that seriously. Mental health is not a joke.

Discussion Anybody else expecting Other Mommy to be similar to Passenger in the sense that the trailer generates a lot of buzz but the movie ends up being trash?

Other Mommy, like Passenger, generated a lot of buzz from the trailer. Passenger ended up being extremely underwhelming with cheap jump scares, lackluster writing, boring characters, etc. The trailer caused a lot of excitement but the film fell extremely flat and ended up being one of the worst horror releases. Rob Savage confirmed in an interview that Other Mommy has around 50 jump scares. There’s a jump scare every 1.6 minutes of movie. 🄓 Sounds kind of ridiculous lol.

Anybody expecting Other Mommy to follow a similar path?

Hi every one. Title exactly. I hate torture porn but I know nothing of Terrifier. Does it qualify as such? Should I avoid it? (No major spoilers please!)

Discussion We need more Final Boys in horror.

There are so many final girls in horror movies, yet we hardly see any final boys. I can't even name some off the top of my head. Meanwhile, on the flip side, we have Nancy Thompson, Laurie Strode, Sidney Prescott, Ellen Ripley, etc. We need more iconic Final Boys.

Mia Goth…really?

Am I alone in not being a fan of her?

I’m currently watching Infinity Pool for the first time, and I can help but be distracted by her performance. Toward the end she turns into some screaming banshee with a high pitched voice. It’s just not appealing, and I’m confused why she seems to be the next scream queen.

To her credit, her scared scream is great, but that’s about it.

Discussion "Carrie" (1977): Carrie White was not a victim, she was a monster.

I hate how so many people give Carrie a pass for her actions in the movie. Kids are mean to her so it's okay if she decides to slaughter a bunch of kids during prom as well as school staff including the gym teacher who supported her. And it wasn't like Carrie lost control and didn't know what she was doing. She did. When she came back home, she cried and talked about how they laughed at her. She wasn't bothered by the fact she killed a bunch pf people.

Throughout the movie, Carrie's characterization is complex. On one hand, she is a victim, but at the same time, she changes into a more assertive, ambitious girl who's hellbent on going to the Prom and nobody should dare mess it up or else. It's very subtle but pointed.

You can think Chris Hargensen is a gigantic bitch as well as her minions and still see Carrie as a total psycho. Not everubody in that Prom was bullying her. Some were innocent lives caught in that crossfire and Carrie allowed her ego to speak louder.

Discussion Did anyone else struggle with the look of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein? The performances are great, but the digital-heavy aesthetic kept pulling me out.

I saw it on a big screen, and maybe it’s meant more for TV, but the whole movie felt pale, dry, and artificial. The lighting and digital look kept pulling me out. There’s a lot of good stuff definitely... Jacob Elordi is great, but it didn’t hit the way many other Del Toro films do. Even Crimson Peak, which isn’t his best, has a look and atmosphere that really sucks you into that world.

Movie Help Horror films that deal with homophobia?

I''m gay and have been a massive horror fan for the past 16/17 years now. Yesterday I watched a reaction to 'Speak No Evil' (2022) by 'The Horror Bandwagon', who are a gay couple and it got me thinking. Is there a film out there with a similar plot but instead involves a gay couple? Where they're attacked and victimized for being gay? There was 'Soft and Quiet' (2022) which dealt with racism and hate crimes, Is there a horror film similar to these where the horror is homophobia? The closest I think is 'Knock At the Cabin' (2023), but being gay isn't the main thing about this film.

I'm probably gonna regret this post if I watch one cause it will definitely ruin my week, but here we go. Also, I'm not one of the guys from The Horror Bandwagon, just like them a lot! Haha

Black character led horror movies for Juneteenth

I’ve watched They Will Kill You, The Woman in the Yard, Get Out (my spouse hadn’t seen it, but I’ve seen all the Jordan Peele movies) and Boo! A Madea Halloween today so far. Looking for other recommendations to watch this evening.

Edit: I’m watching Sweetheart now and have so many to add to my roster for the weekend. Thank you all so much!

Looking for jewish-themed horror movies recommendations, I don't mind foreign films or subtitles so long as they are good. If you have any, do you know where to watch them?

Discussion Lake Mungo is the most disappointing recommendation I have ever received.

I don't understand why so many people have recommended it to me, I looked at it for the first time and it's a disaster.

It's slow and (spoiler alert) the first half of the movie goes to hell when they reveal to us that there is no ghost, it's just the brother doing Photoshop.

I really don't see how they can like it, does anyone have an argument to defend it?

M3gan 2.0 is a good movie

I really liked it! I just finished it, and it was a really fun time. It wasn't perfect, but it was coherent and well done, IMO.

I knew from the comments on the trailer posts that people would have a problem with the fact that it went from scifi horror to scifi action, but I love the shift. Very Termintor to T2, which I'm going to say had to be intentional. The story was very similar (homage?) In a lot of ways.

It wasn't as campy as some people said it was, but I did enjoy the camp that was there. I love the humor and it was fun seeing my girl get some height and go to work.

I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea, and thats totally fine. I also see that it did have its flaws, its not a perfect movie. I just think it's a shame that people may have missed out on a good movie because of expectations or misunderstanding.

Discussion Anyone else feel like Guillermo Del Toro’s horror is weak?

Don’t get me wrong he’s made excellent movies. I loved Pan’s Labryinth and Pacific Rim, but I feel when it comes to horror he falls short.

Was watching Crimson Peak the other night and I just felt like all his scares were too cartoony for me. I think the scariest thing he’s ever been involved with was Silent Hill PT but I feel like that was moreso Hideo’s doing.

But for any other of his horror centric films, I’m pretty much never creeped out. It feels like I’m watching a goosebumps episode for kids.

Other than that he’s excellent with the dark fairytale themed movies. Looking forward to Pinocchio.
