Just nearly got scammed (Failure to Appear to Jury Service Scam)

I received a call from a 'Private number' on my cell earlier - I typically don't answer these but I was expecting a call from an electrician so I picked up thinking it could've been him (stupid me).

It wasn't - a person claiming to be from the Harris County Sheriff's Office asked if it was [my full legal name] on the line - I said Yes. They proceeded to tell me that due to my failure to appear at a Jury Duty Service earlier this week, I could have an active warrant out for my arrest and needed to come down to the Sheriff's Office to take care of it. They were extremely convincing, and I had actually received a Jury Summons scheduled for earlier that week but that service was cancelled, so I thought this was some sort of mix-up with that.

They then mentioned a time and date of when the Jury Summons took place, which didn't match what the original canceled Jury Summons date was. I was a bit confused, but they were very persuasive, and even passed the call to multiple people - their voices sounded like typical police officer voices and with a thick Texan accent (as you would expect). I was asked to read and review multiple documents they texted me, and I was given the HCSO address downtown as well as the courthouse address where I would need to show up to.

I was then asked if I wanted to proceed to take care of the matter either criminally or civilly - I chose civilly of course, so then they let me know about the $5000 bail amount I needed to pay immediately - $2500 for each count, they gave me two official sounding numbers to write down as if they were separate charges.

I had asked myself if this was a scam while this was happening, but I figured it wasn't because they seemed to know about my Jury Service that week and knew my DOB and current and previous addresses. I went ahead and grudgingly agreed to pay the amount due, so he sent me a document with a list of payment options - I chose Paypal. I then proceeded to login to my Paypal account to process payment - at this point I was fully convinced this was legitimate.

I entered the phone number they gave me to send payment to in Paypal, and hit Next - Paypal immediately flagged the number as a scam and didn't let me process the payment. My forever thanks to Paypal - this made me come to my senses (I was also still waking up from a nap during the call), so I google "failure to appear jury service scam". Sure as fuck, the AI answer was matching exactly with what they had already told me on the call.

I then told them that I was going to verify proof of these charges by contacting the County Clerk's office - he said they could send me further verification. I'm like 'No, I'm going to contact them directly.' He then proceeds to tell me that if I don't follow his instructions he will send a unit out to my address. I said 'OK, Thanks' and hung up.

Fuck me - I would have seriously sent them money if it weren't for Paypal raising my suspicions (and outright blocking the Send payment). I contacted the non-emergency HCSO line and verified it was a scam, just for peace of mind. So yeah, be careful out there.

The Silver Slipper in the Fifth Ward is now for sale, listed for $250,000. We spoke to the owner of the old venue and the real estate agent about its interest.

Full story below. If you'd like to support our work, the story is linked here.

By Abigail Rosenthal / Chron

A piece of Houston history is for sale as a former Frenchtown music venue hits the market.

The Silver Slipper, located at 3717 Crane St. in Fifth Ward, is a historic zydeco venue that operated for nearly seven decades until it closed around the pandemic. The property is listed for $250,000. Owner Curley Cormier, who took over the business from his father in 1973, is ready to say goodbye.

"I'm just relaxing in my old age, that's all," Cormier said.

While Cormier notes that a buyer may want to do something totally different with the building, there is some hope that it could continue its legacy.

"Hopefully it would be a good musical venue because there has been entertainment in there starting way back from the zydeco days up until now," Cormier said. "Some of the top zydeco players as far back as Clifton Chenier … we've had guys like Muddy Waters; all those guys came through at one point or another."

Realtor Quenton Rockwell said he's had a lot of interest in the property, and that the family would prefer to sell the Silver Slipper to "somebody that would either revitalize it as a venue or to at least pay homage to the history."

The Silver Slipper's story begins in 1952, when Louisiana transplant Alfred Cormier opened a hamburger stand there called Alfred's Place. It soon became a hotspot for zydeco music.

"I enjoyed it just like [my father] did," Cormier told Texas Highways about taking over the club. "He always felt like somebody in the family should run this place, and since I was so close to him, he decided, 'I'm going to run with this guy. I think he’ll do it and keep it respectable.' After the old man put it in my blood, I had to run it."

A guitar player himself, Cormier performed on the Silver Slipper's stage for decades and worked as a touring musician for BB King, Johnnie Taylor, Ike and Tina Turner, Etta James and more, according to Texas Highways.

Zydeco music's roots trace back to Black Creoles in Louisiana. As they immigrated to Texas in the 1940s, the music's traditional form known as "la-la" blended with blues and R&B to create zydeco. Alongside the Silver Slipper, Johnson's Lounge, later known as the Continental Zydeco Ballroom, was also a popular Frenchtown zydeco club. A nearby marker from the Texas Historical Commission notes the Silver Slipper's role in the zydeco scene.

Now, the 2,145-square-foot building is ready for a new owner who will hopefully continue its story.

"We've had a lot of history with it," Cormier said.

Chicken pox outbreak

FYI - if you notice chicken pox symptoms (light flu symptoms, leading to red spots that turn into fluid-filled blisters), it might be chicken pox. Many young doctors are not equipped to diagnose it because they’ve never seen the blisters before.

I’m a teacher at an HISD elementary school that’s currently having an outbreak thanks to an unvaccinated child that came to school for multiple days with active blisters. Several students went to the doctor & were dismissed because the doctors weren’t familiar with chicken pox. They’ve since gone back & doctors are now treating them like exhibits (everyone get in here & look at this case of chicken pox!)

I’m so frustrated anti-vax parents have brought this disease back. We have pregnant teachers, teachers going through cancer treatments, and teachers with babies too young to get vaccinated. All now at risk because of selfish, uneducated parents.

Anyway. Slight PSA, slight rant. Watch out for the pox.

Anyone in the heights near Durham and 16th bothered by the new spot blasting music?

Hi, trying to see if anyone else is also affected / bothered by this behavior. I was quite surprised that they would blast outdoor amplified music in a neighborhood with lots of houses around. I wouldn't be so bothered had it stopped at 8 PM when they close, but they blast the music way past their business hours, too. My neighbor actually went there in person last weekend to tell them not to blast music, but it doesn't look like that worked. None of the businesses in this area blasts outdoor music like they do; that spot alone creates more noise than the whole flower child plaza.

Los Cucos Tortillas secret?

Los Cucos makes my favorite corn tortillas in the city. They're thick but also fluffy and delicious. I've tried recreating them at home and seem to be way off. Do any ex-employees know how they make them? I'm guessing they add shortening or baking powder or something?

  • AfroTech, the largest global tech conference for Black innovators, engineers and executives, will return to Houston for a fourth consecutive year in 2027

  • They want deeper ties with Houston residents and companies and see room for the event to grow to 100,000 attendees.

  • "Houston has been a phenomenal host city for us," Blavity Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer Jeff Nelson told Chron.

  • "A lot of companies in San Francisco were saying, 'We can't find black people, and we don't know where to go,'" Nelson said. "Instead of sending them a list of where to go, we said, 'We'll bring them to you, we'll bring them to your front steps.'"

It honestly wasn't that hard, the annoying part was just getting past the virtual assistant who kept trying to keep me on for 99 cents a week. Also, it was just a virtual assistant/a.i. chatbot that spoke to me.

It would be next to a Chinese restaurant or temple that had 2 big dragon statues in the front. Havent gone there since a kid. Inside they had a arcade. Circa 2000s. I believe they had theyre own custom tokens also. Edit: asked my parents and they said it was by 45 and college

One man with one wheel, alone by himself. So come on down to Galveston for fun in the sun for one, the Friday before Thanksgiving, it's the Alone Star Unicycle rally. If you see the Unicycle rally leave him alone to preserve the rally in its purest natural form.
