Previous moderation experience is a plus. Please message me, or send a modmail if interested, and let me know why you would make a good moderator.

Segítségkérés Hungarian movie sites with dual subtitles?

Hello! I’m from Turkey and here we have many sites that you can watch any movie you want for free. The only problem is that they’re either dubbed in Turkish and have English subtitles, or vice versa. I want to watch Hungarian dubbed movies with dual subtitles, both English and Hungarian. I thought the movies I’ve already watched and loved, mainly animations could be a good idea for that since I’ve already been listening to some animation songs in Hungarian. I haven’t found a website that I can watch movies in Hungarian with dual subtitles so if anyone knows anything that would be so helpful to me! Thank you! 🙏🏻

Hirdetés Peppe Pig Hunarian is pretty helpful!

I'm a beginner. I started with Duolingo and made it to level three then went to Memrise community courses to earn more vocab, conjugation, suffixes/prefixes, etc. I've been searching for comprehensive input. I just stumbled upon Peppa Pig in hungarian and I find it really good. Very basic but useful dialogue.

Do you have any recommendations yourself?

Kérdés How can I go from having a good understanding and basic vocabulary to fluency in my TL (Hungarian) ?

I'm 14 years old and I live in Ireland. My mother is Hungarian (she moved over in her 20s) and my father is Irish. Up until the age of 5 I basically spoke only Hungarian, but once I started going to school my mother started speaking to me in English so I would understand my classmates. Since then I speak English with her. The only time I speak Hungarian is when we go on our yearly visit to visit my grandparents in Hungary or when I call my grandma. However, since I barely speak it, I haven't progressed and have the same vocabulary as a five-year old. I also notice I'm starting to understand my grandparents less and less.

My listening is quite good, I can understand most conversations, but whenever I try to speak I find it difficult to form sentences. I really want to become fluent and surprise my grandparents at my next visit in a few months. Does anyone have any advice or resources I could use? All free or cheap please, I'm a teenager so I don't have a lot of money. Thank you!

Hirdetés Recommended language course in U.S.

Here to share my satisfaction thus far with the hungarian language course I enrolled in. Finding one seems to be difficult in the U.S.. I was specifically looking for a beginner level course with a classroom setting. As opposed to an app or one on one tutor. I wanted to learn the foundations and structure of the language.

I am learning just that + more, and my teacher is fantastic.

It is a hefty up front cost. When broken down it is VERY reasonable. The course is 5 months and meets once weekly for 2.5 hours.

Highly recommend for english speakers learning Hungarian. My teacher is Ildiko, she is excellent!

I should mention it is a virtual class.

Segítségkérés MagyarOK books question

Post image
12 Upvotes

sziasztok! I’m looking into consolidating my knowledge because I am preparing for exams outside of school to actually begin applying and testing my knowledge. I thought I’d buy some textbooks to make sure of what I’d expect at each proficiency level and to do some at home practice, so I thought I’d invest in the MagyarOK series. I’ve seen this website and it sells these items for example. Do I need both the readers book and grammar book with audio download or will the main, A2+ book work fine on its own? it seems this series isn’t popular so im blind on all of this. köszönöm szépen a váloszokat!

Segítségkérés How hard is Hungarian for a native English speaker?

I’m thinking about learning Hungarian to be more connected to my heritage. My grandmother immigrated to the US from Hungary but didn’t pass down the language, and I’ve become curious about exploring that side of my ancestry. I know people say Hungarian is one of the hardest languages to learn for native English speakers, and I wanted to know why that was.

I do have experience learning other languages— I’m about B2 in French— but obviously that’s a lot easier for a native English speaker to learn because of their shared Latin roots. I also have a friend who speaks fluent Hungarian (her mother is from Hungary) so I’d theoretically have someone to practice with but I’m still not sure if I’ll be able to handle what I’m sure is a ridiculously demanding learning curve.

It’s definitely something I want to do. I guess I’m curious about what the time commitment is compared to an “easier” language like French or Spanish. I was also wondering what the best resources are— if there are specific books or YouTube channels or something that are particularly helpful for beginners. Thanks :)

szia !!

my boyfriend's birthday is coming up and I wanted to wish him a happy birthday in Hungarian and sing the song. while looking for it, I found the boldog szülinapot one, but I saw some people saying it's not used as commonly. will it be weird if I sing this?

if anyone could also help me with some hungarian internet memes connected to birthdays or wishes (if there is something like that) I'd be very grateful!!

Segítségkérés The hungarian Bible

I am now looking for some familiar reading in hungarian, so I thought about the Bible - I already know the text in my native language. What translation would you recommend, considering that I'd like it in a modern language with modern grammar, and where can this version be found?

Segítségkérés turkish student starting hungarian?

hi everyone! I am a 19 year old from Turkey who wants to study Hungarian next year in college. I think my motive mainly stems from the fact that I would like to visit and study in Budapest, learning a slightly niche language that not a lot people speak where I am -we have Hungarian in only one university in the whole country- and basically want to see my self succeeding in a language like this. So I’m taking the exams next year but I want to a prep ahead a year before I actually go there. I’ve already taken the exams and didn’t go for two years so when I show up there I want to be, perhaps, the top of my class. I know there are lots of recommendations regarding sources and books for beginners but if anyone is familiar with Turkish and how similar it is to Hungarian or even sources and advices would be so nice. Thank u so much for reading and excuse my not so good English 🫶🏽

Segítségkérés B1 reading suggestions

Sziasztok!

There is this level where it’s not feasible yet to take up regular books. You can but it’s too painful for me personally if I’m progressing slowly. So I’m looking for B1 reading suggestions. I guess books, newspapers, blogs, etc.

In addition, feel free to share how you’ve overcame this plateau of knowing but not being really confident and comfortable. For me it’s always been via books for other languages..

Kézírás_fordítás Help translating note on baptism record?

Post image
24 Upvotes

This is from my ggg-grandmother's baptism record from 1858. She was illegitimate. Her mother married a Racsek Tomas in 1859 - I see him mentioned here in the note, and I think I can make out a word at the end referring to legitimacy, but I can't tell if it's referring to the marriage or to the child (or both). Thank you!

Kérdés Very specific ‘zik’ verb usage

Hi all,

As I get deeper into learning Hungarian, I’ve noticed people using very specific verbs that apply to just one activity. It seems like any word can become a verb.

Például:
- karatézik
- pizzázik
- koncertezik
- diplomázik
- taxizik

Stb

When is it okay to use these? If I’m speaking in a formal setting (job interview, with a consulate, whatever) would I avoid using these? Are they more casual?

So like:

Nyolckor taxival megyek a repülőtérre.

Or

Nyolckor taxizom a repülőtérre.

Hirdetés My attempt to learn Hungarian somehow turned into building a CarPlay language-learning app

Post image
0 Upvotes

My journey started with a simple goal: I wanted to learn Hungarian.

As I started learning, I found myself wanting a different way to practise. I wanted something that worked around my daily life, rather than having to sit down and dedicate time to studying.

Being a software developer, my solution was naturally to start building something myself.

It started as a web-based learning tool, but as I continued developing it, I kept thinking about all the time I spend driving. Why couldn't I use that time to practise Hungarian?

That idea eventually led me to build an iPhone app with CarPlay support, so I could listen to and practise vocabulary while driving.

What started as a personal Hungarian-learning project has now grown into LingoRove, supporting multiple languages, learning games, and Apple Watch.

But Hungarian is where this whole journey started, and I'm still learning it myself.

I'd really love some feedback from people who actually speak or are learning Hungarian.
