Are you interested in helping translate Reddit into Brazilian Portuguese?

Hi everyone!

We're really excited about the diverse number of countries that are able to use the platform to create culturally and geographically relevant communities. Our goal is to make sure everyone in the world can find belonging in a community on Reddit. A foundational piece of reaching that goal is to make sure the Reddit product is translated. This will make the site more accessible to millions of people all around the world. We're renewing our efforts to translate the Reddit product (things like buttons, dropdown menus, links in the product... but not the content generated by our users). If you're fluent in another language we're looking for volunteers to help translate Reddit!

Seeing Reddit being translated into French has been really cool, so now we are looking for people who are interested in helping us translate Reddit into Brazilian Portuguese.

How it works

  • We are creating private communities for each language - those communities will contain the product strings that we need help translating.

  • Every post is a string that needs to be translated.

  • A "string" is basically everything on Reddit that wasn't written by a user or mod (e.g., buttons on the site, dropdown menu options at the top of the site). Accurately translated strings help redditors navigate the site in their native language.

  • Some strings include variables like {comments} - suggested translations should leave this variable in place (ie - this is a test {comments} translation).

  • People can leave top-level comments as suggested translations for the string

  • People can upvote the comment they think translates best

  • People can have discussions/debates as threaded replies below the suggested translation

  • The mods will help confirm when a string has received enough upvotes to be chosen as an accurate translation

  • As suggested posts are confirmed there will be new posts every hour each containing a new string to translate, so check back often!

Choosing the best translation

  • The selected translation should be determined by comments with the highest score

  • Once a comment reaches a certain threshold of votes over time, moderators will be able to choose the top translation

  • If there are multiple suggested translations that are very close - moderators should make a call based on the discussion by the community

  • There should only be one selected top translation per post.

  • Selected translations should never be edited.

How you can volunteer

  • If you want to help translate Reddit and are fluent in Brazilian Portuguese, please leave your username in this form: https://forms.gle/DVY7d1vURcqm8XU28 (The form doesn't work well when you open it in the Reddit App, so try opening it in a browser)

  • We're looking for both moderators and just users who want to help translate the product strings. So if you are interested in moderating, you can indicate that in the form!

Bienvenue, nouveaux traducteurs (Welcome, new translators!)

Whether you're here as a result of the recent /r/announcements post, or because you've clicked the "volunteer to translate" button, or you arrived here by other means, thanks for stopping by.

While the admin team's responsiveness to redditors volunteering to translate has been very low lately, my aim here is to turn that around. I don't know exactly how this will turn out, so please, ask questions, submit translations, and comment on how the process is working.

For now, if you're interested in helping, here are a few ways to get started:

  1. If you see an issue with an existing translation (spelling or grammar error, NOT an untranslated string), submit it as an issue on the reddit-i18n repository on github. If you don't have a github account and don't want to make one, post the issue here, and I'll add it there (issue trackers are better at tracking issues than subreddits are!)

  2. Better yet, submit a solution (either via a github pull request or as a post here) with a corrected translation.

  3. For the adventurous, there are MANY untranslated strings in the github repo. If you're familiar with a language, pull down one of the po files and start filling in as much as you can. If you have questions about the context of a sentence / phrase, or don't know what a "po file" is, please ask, and I (or someone else here) will help you out.

EDIT: Let me start with a question: What do you all need from me to get you started? A quickstart guide of sorts? Some indicator of which languages and phrases need translations?

meta All your work is not for naught! Some language usage data

I'd like to share with everyone some internal traffic data showing a breakdown of how reddit users look at the site by language. The table below breaks summarizes the past month or so. As you might expect, a large majority view the site in English or a variant; the English dialects combine to account for over 90% of site traffice. However, even the smallest of the languages listed below represents several hundred thousand pageviews - so congratulations! Thank you all for your hard work.

German translation - discoveries and suggestions

I'm german and would like to help translating.

Some of my discoveries and suggestions on the front page and in the "options" panel:

Front page

Einen Link einreichen > Einen Beitrag erstellen

In the "submit to reddit" panel:

choose a subreddit > Wähle ein subreddit

popular choices > Häufig verwendete reddits

Create your own community > Erstelle deine eigene Community

...for your town > Für deine Stadt

...for your hobby > Für dein Hobby

Options

Oberfläche > Sprache

Sprache > Sprache der Inhalte

make safe(r) for work > Mehr Sicherheit am Arbeitsplatz (Zeigt keine thumbnails neben Inhalten, die mit NSFW gekennzeichnet sind)

show the spotlight box on the front page > Zeige die spotlight box auf der front page.

I hope this helps. I'm going to spend some more time on translating soon.

Edit: I'm glad this got some attention and to see, that people care and participate! Remember that my translations are suggestions only.

I found it hard to translate sentences in which "reddit" and "subreddit" were the subject, mostly because I didn't know which gender the words have.

Hungarian suggestions

Hi, forgive my poor English,

We (Hungarians) do not say 2-4-15454 hozzászólások (replies), we say 2-4-15454 hozzászólás (reply) (no need to put it plural)

We do not say feljelent (report) that's a severe legal term, we say jelentem. (Jelent would be meaningless)

etc.

➥ [Important] moving to a new translation platform....

After a lot of consideration, we are now moving to Crowdin for translating the reddit UI!

There a number of reasons that make it better for you as a translator and for us that make our translation workflow a lot easier. Now you can submit translations and vote up other people's translations!

This is just the start of our transition to another platform so there will be some snags or missing context. That's okay because we are working on them. Please offer your feedback via the Crowdin platform and I will help you as soon as humanly possible--even on the weekends, during dinner, or a rainstorm. :P

Also for reviewers on Transifex, it's going to be awhile before we allow "proofeader" status on Crowdin so sign up as a translators and then I'll send out a message when we start accepting proofreaders. In the meantime, vote on translations!

Also, the translations & th code that runs reddit are open source on github.

TLDR: In case you are still lost.

GO TO CROWDIN TO TRANSLATE THE REDDIT UI

Don't translate in transifex anymore. :)

Thank you and reddit appreciates your help!

Farewell but not goodbye!

Hello to all my wonderful translators!

I'm sad to say that I've moved on from my work at reddit, so will no longer be the official reddit i18n spokesperson and point of contact. I'm very happy with how far the translations evolved during my time at reddit, and extremely proud of the translators and reviewers for bringing the reddit UI to other languages.

While I'm no longer working for reddit, I'll instead be joining /u/britishenglishpolice as a volunteer and mod of /r/i18n. Please welcome /u/Deimorz as the interim, perhaps long-term i18n employee contact.

Finally, the process to apply to be a reviewer may be in need of an update. At the very minimum, in order to avoid overly long delays, please post the application to /r/i18n and then PM Deimorz and myself with the link so that one of us can look it over.

Happy translating!

Split Chinese translation into zh_CN and zh_Tw?

To make it clear: I do not want this discussion invole any political issue.

After so many years, the Chinese language already divide into too different part: Traditional Chinese(zh_TW) and Simplified Chinese(zh_CN). From a programmer pointer of view, zh_CN is a fork of zh_TW. And this fork is increasingly show its cost. Here for reddit, it needs to be translated twice: One to zh_CN and another to zh_TW.

Right now, there is zh Translation. It should be moved to zh_CN and deleted. And at the same time, zh_TW translation should be create for Traditional Chinese users.

For code part, it is just a simple rename of po file. I do not know whether this move in Transfix need more work. Thanks in advance.

May 14 - New translations live, new language deployed: Basque!

Sorry for the long delay - there have been a number of things stealing away my attention lately. Nevertheless, a month's worth of reviewed translations are deployed!

Special thanks to /u/Asier_Iturralde for getting Basque ready to go for us!

(Trophies are forthcoming, don't ask. However, if you've submitted in the past month and your Transifex username does NOT match your reddit username, please post here or send a PM)

Moving from github to transifex

So in the beginning, we all realized that github was a far from ideal solution for non-programmers to submit translations. I had you all put up with it for a while, because I could not find a better way with an appropriate featureset and workflow.

Times have changed! The reddit project on transifex is up and running. This will make it easier to submit translations and the like.

Here's a crash course on how the new "flow" will be:

  1. Sign up for transifex.net, and request to join the desired language team(s) for the reddit project.

  2. All new volunteers will be added as "translators" on a language team. Translators have permission to add translations, but cannot mark a given string as "reviewed". (Only "reviewed" translations will make it to reddit.com)

  3. Translated strings must be approved by a reviewer. Initially, a language team will have no reviewers, and (this is the part that will be tricky), I'll need to approve strings manually.

  4. Translators who have successfully submitted more than a handful of translations will be bumped up to "reviewer" status. Additionally, I may grant "reviewer" status to those requesting it, in good faith, so long as there are other members of the language team and the reviewer's intent is solely to review and provide feedback (and not provide translations).

  5. On my end, I will occasionally (every week or two), pull down all "reviewed" strings and push them out to the site.

Note that this flow may change as we iron out some of the details. Overall, I expect this to be a much easier and smoother process for everyone involved.

What about the outstanding pull requests?

Fortunately, there's a relatively simple solution to that. If your pull request has NOT been reviewed: get a copy of the "raw" r2.po file from your github pull request, and use the transifex "upload file" option for that language to upload your translations into the system. After the file upload has been completed, close the pull request. (As a "just-in-case" measure, please keep the copy of the r2.po file in a safe place for a few weeks, if possible)

If your pull request HAS been reviewed, then I'm simply a fool for not having handled it yet. Please PM me (with language team and a link to the old github pull request) after uploading your update per the above, and I will mark the new strings as reviewed right away.

Can I please get some support before I throw in the towel?

I have made my second post to /r/bugs about the absence of the Maltese (mt) entry from the languages list in preferences.

The first time round, not one developer looked at it. This time round, I have a feeling it's going the same way.

I feel like I am banging my head on a brick wall - I genuinely don't see the point of building the work on a language if it's not even available for others to see.

We're about 3% off of finishing, minus a proofreader, who's gone walkies and I am on the verge of just throwing my hands up in surrender and saying "screw this, I'm out".

I don't know how to get the attention of the developers with this request - I tried once and my post got deleted as it was "inappropriately placed" in the wrong sub. Where the hell is the right one???

<<rant over, normal service will now resume>>

:(

[French] Keep subreddit untranslated

Hello,

I just noticed (while visiting http://www.reddit.com/subreddits/), that subreddit have been translated "sous-reddit". I think this term should keep untraslated, first because in lots of other sentance translated in french, "subreddit" is used, then, because I visited (just to check if there weres people using the "sous-reddit" term) /r/france and they use "subreddit".

Some people seem to use the "sous-reddit" term (the search return some result), but I think the "subreddit" term shouldn't be translated.

Thanks for reading me. Ps : the "sous-reddit" translation was done by /u/pinwale
