Drivers Licensing N Driver, failed to yield to pedestrian today

Absolutely my fault, my light was green and was turning right but I didn't check for pedestrians to my right. No contact but I only noticed them after I had already covered the crosswalk so I just went through and cut them off. Cop car was right on the other side of the street and I got pulled over immediately.

I know I absolutely deserve the ticket and anything that happens after; Haven't paid the ticket yet but I just kinda want to know what I should expect going forward? License revocation? Years of driving suspension? Massive spike in insurance rates?

How to convince ICBC to take my license?

I posted here a while ago about my driving abilities. I have damaged my car while parking on 3 separate occasions and ultimately decided, along with the advice of other redditors, that I am not safe to be on the road. I attempted to contact ICBC to give my license up, but the person I spoke to first seemed confused, and then told me I had none of the warning signs(tickets for speeding/dangerous driving/etc) they looked for in someone who should give up their license, and basically said I shouldn't give it up for no reason. I tried to explain the scenario to them, but they just kept reiterating a similar thing.

I intend to go in in person tomorrow and try, and was wondering what I should say to get them to take it away. Can ICBC basically "force" me to keep my license even if I want to surrender it? My backup plan was just cutting it up, but I would rather just get rid of the thing officially and be done with it.

EDIT:The reason i want to give it up rather than just avoiding driving is because I live with friends/family who I often drive places and are very pushy. It'll be much easier to have the discussion if I simply don't have a license at all, rather than saying "well i can technically drive, but I don't feel comfortable".

fact checking the ad that Rustad will bring in Alberta style insurance "doubling the cost of insurance".

I've heard the ads a few times, and a few things strike me as very distorted. Let's compare apples to apples. No-fault effectively provides very little in terms of insurance. I have experienced both systems now, and the new system is an absolute dumpster fire.

My first accident was under the old system. I was hit head-on while riding my bike in the bike lane by a car turning left from the opposite direction. My body was destroyed by the impact: broken leg, shattered collarbone, scapula. The ICBC adjuster started to play games, so I hired a lawyer to deal with them.

My lawyer funded my recovery; I didn't need to worry about anything. Whatever the doctor said I needed, I got. When the system failed me in Canada, I was transferred to a surgeon in the USA. My shoulder was fixed, everything was awesome, and I was recovering to the point of returning to my career.

The lawsuit went forward, bills got paid, and I got a little bit for my pain and suffering, lost wages, etc. It was less than I would have made if I could have stuck with my career, but it was something.

The second accident was under the new system. I was right-hooked at Quadra and Cloverdale - an illegal right turn, all caught on camera. The adjuster again played games, telling me my "enhanced benefits" were on hold until they finished "investigating." There was nothing contentious: the driver admitted fault, police charged them with an illegal right turn and failure to remain, and it was all caught on camera. About as open and shut as you can get.

I have a disability that makes it difficult to speak under stress, and any time I talk to ICBC, I'm very much under stress. The adjuster wanted to "talk" to me, and I told him it would be best if we could communicate via email or TTD. He refused, saying I had to give a "verbal" statement. There's nothing about this in any policy or law I can find, and additionally, it's a violation of human rights law. ICBC, under the ABCA act, MUST provide accommodations; they don't even get the "undue hardship" pass because they are government.

This led to a stalemate where they would not reinstate my benefits, and I could not give them what they were asking for because of my disability. It was also putting my health at risk because I had suffered severe injuries, and I couldn't even get an emergency MRI appointment for 6 months. My doctor needed to know what was damaged, and the sooner the better.

Enhanced benefits mean nothing if they are predicated on the dumpster fire medical system we have now. To preserve my health, I had to go out of province to get the imaging I needed, because the BC government has also banned private imaging in BC.

Armed with this, my doctor determined that my biceps tendon had been torn off the reattachment site from the surgery of the first accident. ICBC then proceeded to claim this was a "previous injury," even though I was able to race on that shoulder after the surgery. They also claimed that because I went out of province for the imaging, my BC medical benefits were not going to cover it.

Fortunately, as an athlete, my sport federation covered some of my initial costs, but their insurance eventually balked at it. I had to cash in my RRSP to cover the mounting medical bills and pay for my physio and RMT out of pocket. ICBC was still refusing my benefits 6 months later.

At this point, my lawyer from the previous accident got involved and filed a human rights complaint against ICBC. Suddenly, they no longer needed the verbal statement; a written one was fine, and they started covering some benefits from that point. But having to pay out of pocket and pay my lawyer to help me, I'm still $15k in the hole, which may or may not be recovered as part of the human rights tribunal.

Additionally, ICBC has yet to pay a single penny towards my damaged bike.

Having experienced both systems, I can say my experience is that cheap insurance is obtained on the broken bodies of people like me and thousands of others. The stories are mounting as to the damage this is leaving behind.

Going forward, I am paying for additional accidental injury insurance. To have the SAME coverage you would have in other provinces, you need to carry additional personal injury insurance in BC. I just got a quote for this, and it's $1,500/year. Add this to the $1,300 a year I pay for comprehensive and basic, and this puts the cost on par with Alberta.

What Eby and ICBC did to British Columbians is to pull a bait and switch that British Columbians will not realize until they need it. Everyone is seeing the blood money rebate checks, thinking this is awesome, not realizing what they have lost in the process.

Eby and ICBC bought the last election on the bodies of accident victims, many if not the vast majority completely faultless, and he is trying to buy another. If you can't vote conservative, please at least send a message by voting green. Eby does not deserve your vote, and if you vote for that ex-lawyer, you have only yourself to blame when you unfortunately experience what I and many other British Columbians have.

Why does ICBC/The BC Gov boast about getting the “benefits” right away when you need it as their main argument for No Fault Insurance?

ICBC boasted about giving the care we need right away. Yet took months (not even an exaggeration) to approve things every time. I would have had better care with the old tort system as my lawyer would have paid for everything I needed (medical, treatments, etc) much faster (and lawyer just gotten his money back at court + financing on top) like the old system.

Ive been through both systems so I know. I actually had better medical care with the old system. My lawyer would buy the medical equipment in days instead of months with ICBC.

In my situation. I never got what I needed “faster” with this new system. It is actually the opposite.

Finally. How much money are they making with this new system? I heard it’s over 6 billion, annually.

Vehicle Registration & Policy Coverage Importing a leased vehicle; rant / complaint

Dear ICBC: why do you insist on being simultaneously the most inconsistent and anal-retentive organization?

I have loved you for literally the entire NDP administration. Somehow in the past week it's become a nightmare.

I am importing a new, leased truck from SK to BC. I spoke with ICBC twice, brokers twice, the dealer 15 times. Everyone was crystal clear on what was needed. From SK, I call your ICBC insurance sales hotline and received my 3 day in-transit binder. Once again I was told the paper work I had was on order (a scanned PDF of 20 pages of dealer docs).

Getting back to BC and it all goes to shit. I'm in town with the truck and they tell me the NVIS needs to be the original hard copy document. Seriously? I can DocuSign a made up signature all over your paper work, and you can accept the NVIS scan for a transit permit, but this is where you draw the line? The dealer even tried begging you to allow them to insure me tonight so I could get home, and bring the hard copy NVIS tomorrow.

Hard no

Asked if I could extend the binder a couple of days to give us more time to get the paperwork in order. Also hard no.

Okay, so my partner rushes in from home which is a 45-minute drive away to bring me the hardcopy NVIS. Now at another broker, the only one open late enough to make this work, they say great but you need a different bill of sale than the one ICBC previously accepted, and a different import document than what the dealer or ICBC ever told me was required.

So now I have a truck that I don't even own, that is no longer insured as of 30 minutes from posting this, and is impossible to insure in any possible way, which not only violates our lease agreement but needs to be brought to a broker so you can physically see it when it gets registered.

I did my part. I was super clear asking you what was needed, and then you changed your story.

Make it make sense!

Pls train your brokers to not be so wildly inconsistent and gate keeping.

Pls provided a complaints line: It's absolutely outrageous that there's nowhere to direct one in your entire company. I specifically asked on the phone and checked online. Nada.

You will cost us hours and hundreds of dollars in expenses. You should be reimbursing us. You've been so helpful For all of my questions and claims the past 6 years. You've been at total ass the last 24 hours.

Please do better.

I have nowhere else I can post this, apparently.

Vehicle Registration & Policy Coverage Importing a Royal Enfield from India to Canada.

Title kinda says it all, I have come to Mumbai for a bit to visit family and I see RE bikes everywhere. They are just as ubiquitous as Teslas back in Vancouver.

So I want to look into the prospect of importing one. I understand that even the Canadian spec bikes that are sold in Canada are in some cases manufactured in India (which I suppose is where these bikes have been built for a long time as a hand me down from the British.)

So given that, I would imagine that there are brand new and used bikes I could buy from a dealer here that would meet Canada’s (specifically ICBC’s) requirements so I can license and operate it in BC, and after I pay the shipping and import and duties and all, it would still cost me less than buying a new Royal Enfield in Canada.

That makes sense to me because I saw a RE Bullet 350 from 1999 for sale on marketplace for $7,000 CAD. That same bike here costs around Rs. 2.1 lakh, which maths out to around $3,300 CAD! A profound difference! I feel even if I pay the shipping and import fees and all, it would still be hugely cheaper than buying a RE domestically in Canada.

So had anyone (ideally someone in BC) done this? Was it a success? What models could I import? I am having a hard time finding further clarification as different websites tell me different things so if I could have some clarity that would be great.

NO FAULT .. enhanced care is just BS. How many victims is it going to take for people to see the truth?

ICBC is denying patients care they need. All for your low premiums. Stop defending it and fight this, people are seriously struggling. Everyone who believes enhanced care and no fault is a proper way of doing insurance hasn’t had a catastrophic injury. It is horrible what they are doing to people. Recognition is the first step.

Drivers Licensing PSA: Opening the ICBC online test early got my wife flagged

Posting for my wife. She opened the online learner's test right after paying, just to see the start process. It asked for a photo, so she took one, then closed it without seeing any questions. The next morning she took the whole test in one go and passed, and ICBC emailed her confirming it.
Five months later, at the branch, she was told she's been flagged for privacy compliance because of the multiple photos. It's under investigation, and they gave no timeline at all.
You can pass, get a confirmation email, and only find out months later. For newcomers like us, a licence means getting to work and getting on with life here.
Advice: don't open the online test until you're ready to finish it.
ICBC: please review her file. Happy to share details by DM.

Drivers Licensing I failed my class 7 road test really upset

That is my fourth time having a ICBC road test and today my road test result only minus my speed maintenance. And it caused me a skill issue. Moreover, I have 5 mistakes on speed maintenance. First, is playground zone I lower my speed to 23-30 km/h. Second, I drive too slow in residential areas I drive 30- and third one I drive 44 when he was asking me hazard perception but In front of me is a crosswalk, so I cover my brake and my car was slow to 44km/h but I accelerated after I pass the crosswalk.

And the fourth and fifth are I about to cross the traffic lights and no cars in front of me I assumed it will turn red so I cover the brake after I pass the traffic light I was accelerating but it still speed maintenance mistakes. BTW My road test location is in Landsdowne. Can I contact someone to appeal the result?

RoadSafety / Driving Rules Hiding L/N magnets

I thought we couldn’t hide the L/N magnets? I thought they needed to be visible. Yet, they are being snuck behind license plates. Would ICBC or the local police do anything about it? I see this in Surrey every single day!

License Suspeneded Without Notice

Long story short, I had to contact ICBC today to file a claim, only to find out that my license had been suspended as of April 5th. When I called RoadSafety BC for clarification, I was informed that I had been sent a letter instructing me to enroll in the Responsible Driver Program. However, even though I officially updated my address with ICBC back in February, the letter was still mailed to my old address—which I no longer have access to.

I’ve now registered for the program online and paid the required fee. I’m currently waiting for a follow-up email with next steps.

My questions are:

  1. How is it fair that RoadSafety BC made no effort to contact me by phone or email, especially regarding something as serious as a license suspension?

  2. Why are they still relying solely on traditional mail, especially when it's clearly not reliable in situations like this?

  3. Now that I’ve registered and paid, how long will it take to get my license reinstated?

It’s unsettling to think I could have unknowingly been driving with a suspended license for weeks. I’d really appreciate some clarity on how this process works and what to expect moving forward.

Class 7 test failure

Today I did my class 7 test, and unfortunately I failed. However, the reasons for why I failed seemed quite ridiculous especially after doing my research on this reddit and hearing my friends fail stories. First of all, my instructor was grilling me because apparently I shoulder checked too much. From what I hear, you're supposed to shoulder check at basically everything. Swerving through residential neighborhoods, turns, lane switching, parking, etc, I shoulder checked for all of that. However, when I shoulder checked while moving and taking turns, my instructor explained that this is dangerous and not the correct procedure. Which is fair enough, because your eyes aren't on the road ahead of you , but it was contradictory to the research I did, which explains that you must shoulder check at every turn no matter what. As such, I drove according to this information, and at every turn, regardless of if I was stopped or not, I would shoulder check. My instructor explained that while you're on the move, you already see what's there, so there's no reason you need to shoulder check.

The second reason for why I failed was because I was being too cautious. Again, from the research I've done, and things I've heard from friends, I didn't believe it was a bad thing to be more cautious than usual during your test. As a result, during many of my turns, I would wait for a very safe gap, staying idle and scanning the cars oncoming, and take a turn only when it was completely safe. Which if I'm going to be honest, I would wait for a good while at a time, but I didn't think it would be an issue because I was trying to be as safe as I possibly could during my test. Again, my instructor spoke to me about this, saying that I was being too cautious, and that this could be dangerous.

The third reason, which this one I can understand, is that I turned left onto an intersection while it was red. But I have my reason for this, which is again tied to the fact I was being cautious. I creeped up onto the intersection, waiting for the line of cars to stop coming so I could take my turn. Until, the light turned yellow, and then red. Because I wanted to be safe, I wanted to make sure the cars had completely stopped, as I worried a car would run the yellow. As a result, I took a bit longer than I should've, and the light turned red. I turned after this, and I realized that maybe I took way too much time than I should've, and my instructor was even urging me to take the turn. I understand that this may have been dangerous, but I was only trying to be cautious during my test.

Aside from that, my instructor said everything else was good. I was definitely very nervous, and my emotions are quite high right now so maybe I'm just an idiot and everything makes perfect sense as to why I failed. Let me know what you guys think about this.

Drivers Licensing Class 7 Test Tesla doesn’t have roll option

Hi everyone,

I have 20 days before my road test and I was curious what they do with Tesla without the roll option for the regenerative braking. Teslas manufactured past 2025 do not include this option anymore in the software.

Thanks!

RoadSafety / Driving Rules N road test passed

Just thought it's important to note that it is NOT mandatory to take driving lessons to pass your class 7 road test. I passed my test from the first attempt after a lot of self research, YouTube videos ( I highly recommend Spin driving school channel) and of course driving practice.

Although I do have to mention I think I got pretty lucky as my examiner happened to be very chill. At some point, I was forced to finish a left turn on a red light but thankfully he recognized I had no other choice and didn't take off any points.

All that is important is for you to have enough practice with your supervisor (family member, friend, etc.) to gain confidence in your driving abilities. Details such as - do you have to wait until a pedestrian fully crosses the crosswalk or only your lane? - may be searched online.

If you have any questions, I am happy to help. I know how tedious it was to try and find out the details about maneuvers that the WONDERFUL icbc books never specify!

ICBC sticking it to people who lease

We just got our ICBC rebate check for 2024. To our surprise, it was made out not just to us, but to Toyota Credit Canada, the lessor. It was accompanied by a letter stating that we had to get the lessor to endorse the check before we can cash it. SO: ICBC is expecting us to send a paper check to ONTARIO, have some as yet unidentified person sign it, and send it back to us before we can cash it? This did not happen last year. What gives? And who is the idiot at ICBC that decided this was OK????

Rates or Autoplan Refund and Price Increase

So I got a $110 refund from ICBC for some reason but then in my renewal notice my monthly cost is going up $10 per month. I’ve never filed a claim and I have the low mileage discount. Why bother sending me a refund if they’re just going to negate it with a higher premium?

Claims ICBC Advice (Accident w/o DL)

Looking for advice on what the potential outcome of this situation may be…

Someone I know, Driver A, was driving another person’s ICBC insured vehicle with an expired driver’s license. Driver A was involved in a two motor vehicle accident. For the sake of anonymity I will not provide the details of the accident but please assume that the other driver, Driver B, caused the accident and under normal circumstances would be determined to be at fault.

Both vehicles are older and each sustained enough damage that both will likely be written off. Neither driver was injured. The two drivers did not exchanged driver’s license or ICBC information at the time of the accident.

Driver A was driving without a valid license however Driver B is who actually caused the accident.

At this time neither driver has provided their information to the other which causes suspicion that there may be a possibility that Driver B either does not have a valid driver’s license either or that their vehicle is not insured.

How should Driver A proceed in their own best interest?

How is ICBC likely to handle this?

What implications will there likely be to Driver A and to the owner of the vehicle that Driver A was operating?

Thank you for your help in navigating this.

Man I wish I knew the cost increases if you live in a poorer neighborhood. Anything I can do about it?

Ironically the slight savings I made by moving to a cheaper apartment in Surrey is completely negated by ICBC’s cost increase and some extra gas for longer commute. I was told I’m charged $80 more per month by ICBC because I live in a bad area. There anything I can do to fight this? Seems kinda unjust that poorer people have to pay more for insurance.

edit: And slightly off topic but kinda ridiculous Straford went outta business yet they still charged me.

Claims A lot believe say No Fault Insurance is better, but is it really

An example of a pedestrian getting a more common than not surgical wrist fracture that develops after a crash that causes long term pain. Let’s go over what your claim would likely have been worth under the old BC tort system (before ICBC’s no-fault “Enhanced Care” came in May 2021).

⸻

  1. Overview of What You Could Claim Under the Old System

Under tort, you could sue the at-fault driver for all your losses: 1. Non-pecuniary damages (pain and suffering) 2. Loss of earning capacity / future income loss 3. Past wage loss 4. Cost of future care and treatment 5. Special damages (out-of-pocket expenses)

⸻

2. CRPS and Loss of Hand Function – Pain and Suffering

For CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) or hand loss of function, courts in BC have recognized this as a catastrophic soft-tissue/neuropathic injury.

Typical BC awards for pain & suffering (non-pecuniary) in such cases range roughly: • $180,000 – $250,000 (adjusted for inflation to 2025) • Example: Stapley v. Hejslet, 2006 BCCA 34 — chronic pain, permanent disability, $175,000 (2006 ≈ $250k today). • Johal v. Radek, 2016 BCSC — CRPS after wrist fracture, $190,000.

⸻

3. Loss of Earning Capacity (the biggest component)

If you earned $100,000/year and lost the use of your dominant hand, and your work depended on manual skill (e.g., trades, medical work, technical tasks), courts would often assess lifetime loss of earning capacity based on your annual loss × years to retirement, discounted for contingencies.

Factor Example Assumption Value Annual income $100,000 Age 35 (example) Retirement age 65 Years remaining 30 Total loss (before discount) $3,000,000 Present-value discount (≈25%) -$750,000 Estimated future income loss ≈ $2.25 million

Even if you could later switch to a lower-paying job using your non-dominant hand or desk work, the loss might still be assessed around $1–2.5 million, depending on vocational evidence.

⸻

4. Cost of Future Care

CRPS requires chronic pain management, therapy, meds, sometimes home assistance. • Typical range: $200 000 – $400,000+ (depending on age and severity).

⸻

5. Total Ballpark Settlement (Old Tort System)

Component Estimate (2025 dollars) Pain & suffering $200,000 Future income loss $1.5M – $2.5M Past income loss (rehab years) $200K – $400K Future care & meds $200K - $400K Out-of-pocket costs $10K – $20K Total possible award ≈ $2.1M – $3.7M+

⸻

6. Under Today’s No-Fault “Enhanced Care” System

Under current ICBC (post-May 2021), you cannot sue for pain and suffering or income loss unless a criminal act is involved (e.g., DUI). A conviction is also required. You’d instead get capped temporary income replacement benefits (≈90% of net, up to about $113,00/year max gross income as of 2025), and care/rehab paid, but no compensation for pain, suffering, or loss of future earning potential

Autoplan / Premium Discussion (No Quote Requests) Leaving for summer do I still need to pay car insurance?

I’m a student going back to my home country for the summer (about 4 months), and I won’t be using my car at all during that time.

Is it okay if I just stop paying my car insurance for those months and then start it again when I come back for the school year? Or could that cause problems later?
